🦈 Open wide! It’s Shark Week. Growing up to 40 ft (12 m) long, the basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is the second largest fish on Earth. This shark’s name nods to the way it feeds, “basking” at the surface of the ocean, with its dorsal fin poking out of the water. This giant feeds passively on plankton, which it catches with highly developed bristle-like gill rakers that extend between the gill arches visible inside its gaping mouth.
