All of the Latin West was about creation and controversy with the Pope and religion itself.
Charlemagne’s title talked about how God crowned him and it had nothing to do with the Pope. Secular authority was needed to answer to pope.
The university system was a medieval creation. Learning became important and had 7 liberal arts.
He admired the Pop, but was furious at him. He utilized Christianity to make a united kingdom. A major religious debate was emperor vs pope.
Charlemagne, the son of Pepin the short, turns focus to the West. He loves education, even though he could not write. He started the education Renaissance.
There was also a section of “do nothing Kings”. They went Pepin of Pleristal, Charles Marlet, and Pepin the Short.
The highest office was the mayor of the palace, just below the King. They controlled who accessed the King and who could talk/see him. He oversaw the disputes of the aristocracies.
Religion became the key to their identity. Single religion also became ideal.
He won and converted, as well as 3000 of his soldiers.
Childeric, the father of Clovis, served as a Roman soldier and Clothild wanted him to convert to Christian. Childeric said if he is victorious he will convert.
Merovingian Dynasty
The Merovingian's had a lot of decentralization and were heavily Romanized.
Europe is slipping back from the “light” of times in the Dark Ages. Political power is dispersed and wealth is derived by land.
