Chapter 3: Cold Touches
You weren’t prepared for the rush of cold air that came when the doors to the living room dramatically opened. Nor were you prepared to see Tony Stark in front of you. A breath got caught in your throat as you watched him carefully when he looked down at you before glancing at Bucky and Steve.
“I thought you guys might have gotten stuck out here. Since you have made me wait for now…” He quipped as he dramatically brought his arm up to his face to check his watch.
“30 minutes” He looked at Steve waiting for a reply holding both sides of the double doors preventing anyone from getting in.
You began to feel the anxiety building up in your chest as you subconsciously began rubbing your palms against the material of your leggings. You felt a, now familiar, bite of coldness brush against the top of your hand. Chills ran down your spine at the contact of him. You could feel now just how close he stood to you. You knew if you focused hard enough you would be able to feel the warmth radiating off him. The smell of him.
Your trance was broken as Tony looked back at you stepping against gesturing you to come in. Only when he was out of your viewpoint were you able to see the living room. You looked around the room stunned at the extravagance of the room.
You heard Steve and Tony bickering behind you as you approached the conference table that seated the rest of the Avengers, including the infamous Black Widow who was staring at you.
“So you must be the girl that’s been causing a riot in this tower” She spoke with a warm smile looking between you and Bucky who was now standing behind you.
You gapped not knowing how to answer instead you simply returned her smile and sat down at the two chairs that were seated next to each other. Like you and Bucky were at trial.
Bucky glared at Natasha at her choice of words to you. She chuckled at his glare holding her hands up playfully. It seemed friendly, but you’ve seen that look before. You stiffened remembering the fight that led you here. Your body didn’t relax as he sat down next to you not knowing who was sitting next to you.
You didn’t know what had happened to the Winter Soldier. If he was erased never to be seen again and this is simply his shell sitting next to you. Or if the Winter Soldier and Bucky Barnes were one and the same, able to switch from one to the other seamlessly.
You hoped he wasn’t entirely gone and that thought scared you. You hoped you would get to know your soulmate’s good and bad parts. You shook your head gaping at the burning feeling in your chest. A sign of the bond taking root and vibrating throughout your body.
Tony rounded the table with an agitated Steve as the entire group was now seated and focused entirely on the two of you.
A familiar feeling of anxiety began to spread through my chest as Tony typed into his database before finally pulling up a slideshow labeled “RULES FOR S.O.A”.
Steve shook his head and held it in his hands before letting out a loud sigh. Tony was quick to shush him dramatically before continuing to a group of annoyed Avengers.
You felt a knot in your throat that you couldn’t swallow. The reality of this crashing down on you, hard.
“Rules for Soulmates of Avengers” Tony read from the hologram. “Even though Bucky is not technically an Avenger we are just going to let it slide”
Your hands tightened in your lap as your breaths came out too quickly. Bucky tensed beside you as well, hands balled into tight fists and his jaw clenched as he looked sharply at Tony.
Tony ignored his glare, “First things first, all soulmates of the avengers will live in the tower alongside their soulmates. As a form of protection and also so no soulmate can be used as leverage towards an avenger”. Tony spoke as if these words held no weight as he continued, as if it was obvious this was the right thing to do.
“Soulmates may work within the tower if they want but will have access to anything they wish for. When they leave the tower they must be with an escort whether that be an Avenger or a guard when the Avengers are gone”
You pictured life at the Avengers tower. A life with no job, no morning coffee shop, no strolls in the park. A life that doesn’t involve the same apartment that you have spent the past 3 years laughing and crying with your friends. The ceiling of your bedroom that you stared into picturing a life with your soulmate. Dreams that were filled with love and happiness.
Overwhelming pressure formed in your chest with a feeling that you could barely recognize, dread.
Steve reached over Tony, slamming his palm onto the projector shutting off the slideshow.
“Are you insane?!” Steve sneered in Tony’s face, the whole of the avengers were now on their feet.
Natasha held Steve back from Tony while Sam held back Tony. Wanda and Vision idled at the side waiting for tensions to cool.
“In what world do you think this is the way? They don’t even know each other yet for Christ’s sake and you go and parade a life of being a prisoner in the tower” Steve raised his hand to put a finger in Tony’s face.
“You know this isn’t the way” Steve huffed.
Your thoughts spiraled as they fought. You didn’t think you could do this. Any of this. It was your first time even meeting him. How can you just move in with him? Is this what having a soulmate is like? Is this what is expected of you?
You felt the familiar panic crawl into your throat as you looked around the room, looking for an escape.
Tony and Steve were still arguing, loudly, the rest of the table joining in. You glanced at the man next to you. He was deadly silent watching the scene in front of you, his hands gripping the arms of the chair. You could tell that it was too much for him.
Leaning over slightly you whispered to him ,“Can we leave?” your voice shook against your will as you desperately needed out of the room. His head snapped to yours almost forgetting who was sitting next to him. His grip on the chair softened and the vein in his neck disappeared as he stared at you.
You watched as he looked at you softer than you expected before nodding his head. You swallowed nervously as you watched him stand waiting for you to do the same. You rushed out of your chair awkwardly waiting for him to guide you.
You both slipped out of the conference room unnoticed as you could hear the arguing echo through the hall.
Your body relaxed slightly as you finally felt like you were able to breathe. You shook your arms slightly trying to shake off the rest of the tension. You followed Bucky silently as he guided you towards the balcony of the Avengers tower. Your steps slowed down slightly and as if he could hear it he turned around looking towards you.
“I don’t do very well with heights” you said softly, trying to weigh your fear of heights for your need of fresh air. Bucky watched as you fidgeted with your hands, contemplating going to the balcony. You looked up at him nervously as he took a small step towards you. A wave of sandalwood and spice crashed into you, stifling a groan and the need to press your nose into his chest.
“I won’t let you fall” Bucky looked at you, intensely serious. You smiled brightly at him almost laughing at how serious he was. A wave of warmth rushed through you and settled in your chest. You hated how much you liked the feeling, how much he makes you feel like that.
Bucky looked down at your lips almost in awe like no one has ever smiled at him like that before. You pressed your lips together looking towards the door of the balcony before gesturing to him.
“Can you go first?” you asked, a little nervous. He looked at you a moment longer before nodding and heading to the door. You held your breath as you followed him out onto the balcony. The wind rushed through your hair as you stepped out onto the thick glass. You closed your eyes as you accidentally looked down and realized just how high you were. A heavy hand settled on your back as you snapped your eyes open to find Bucky right next to you.
“It’s ok” he murmured, guiding you towards the chairs. Your stomach fluttered and not because of your fear for heights. You closed your eyes again trying to focus on his touch, the way his hand feels against you, the warmth of his skin seeping through your thin shirt. You forgot about the balcony and soaked in his touch. Your focus snapped as your knees bumped into the leg of the chair forcing you to take a seat, ripping the hand off your back.
A blush rushed to your cheeks as he stepped away from you sitting in the chair next to you. You didn’t want him to know that you noticed the way he scooted the chair closer to yours before sitting down. You also didn’t want him to know how much you liked that.
You took a deep breath as you leaned back into your chair, your chest feeling lighter already. You could feel Bucky’s stare on your face as you looked towards him offering a soft smile. “Thank you for this” You said softly, looking away from him.
He didn’t reply as his gaze traveled the distance from your eyes to your lips. His chest rising and falling deeply as he looked away, fingers tightly gripping the armrest.
“It wasn’t supposed to be like this” he looked towards you, his metal arm shifting away from you unconsciously as you adjusted in your seat to face him better.
“Like what?” your hands played with the material of the chair as you watched him carefully.
“You shouldn’t be forced to do anything. You have a choice” he spoke gruffly, like the words were hard for him to get out. A pang of longing flourished in your chest. You knew he was speaking from the heart, knowing he didn’t want your free will to be taken away like his was.
You held your breath as you slowly placed your hand over his metal hand. You felt him stiffen as you touched him. “Is this ok?” you asked lifting your hand to hover over his, placing it fully on him when you saw him nod.
“I know this is a lot, it feels like a lot. While I don’t want to move in as fast as they think I should I still want to get to know you. As my soulmate” your heart was racing in your chest as you spoke. “We can take this slow, as slow as we want to” you looked at him as an emotion you didn’t recognize flashed over his face.
His eyes looked lighter, body looked more relaxed. “I would like that” he said softly. Looking down at his hand intertwined with yours, he softly tightened his hand in yours rubbing his thumb over the skin of your hand.
Your chest was so warm looking at him, watching him. You knew that this would be tough for both of you. But up on that balcony you looked at him with a sense of hope he had never seen before. With soft touches and soft smiles, you knew that you were going to be ok.

Chapter 2: When the Phone Rings
It had been weeks since you met your soulmate. Since your soulmate almost tried to kill you. To say you have been handling it poorly would be an understatement.
In the beginning, you would sit by the phone waiting for Steve to call every hour of every day. And every day you would be disappointed by the silence that filled your apartment. Your workplace was one of the many that were ruined during the attack so you have had nothing to fill your time with. So you deep dived into finding out who exactly Bucky was. The more you searched about him the more your heart ached at the thought of what he has done. A news coverage spread of the attack a few weeks ago named him the “Winter Soldier”, whose list of crimes were so long they shorted the coverage to only cover his confirmed kills.
His murders.
The day you found out you couldn’t eat all day. Throwing up anything you attempted to eat. Since then your faith in the man that Steve described has been lost. How can someone like that do this?
So you stopped waiting by the phone. Stopped waiting for any sign of your soulmate. Began trying to move on with your life. Started volunteering at animal shelters, tried yoga, took daily walks to clear your racing thoughts. But the more you did to try and move on the harder it was to sleep.
Your dreams plagued you a life that could be. A life with Bucky, a life of happiness with your soulmate. Then you woke up and for a second the happiness in your dreams would follow you but it wouldn’t last long when reality came crashing down and left you with a heavy heart ready to split into two.
You were making breakfast one morning getting ready to go to the animal shelter when you heard a name on the news that caused your body to go still. Spinning around your breath catches on the screen at the picture of him.
Bucky
You grabbed the remote with a shaky hand turning up the tv until it covered the sound of your beating heart.
“Statements have come out that the infamous Winter Soldier was not involved in the bombing of the UN Senate in Vienna but instead was framed for the bombing and the murder of King T’Chaka by Helmut Zemo”
You could not move as the picture of Zemo came on screen. You didn’t dare to breathe as you watched the screen.
“Sources move to the motion to pardon the Winter Soldier, formerly lieutenant James Buckanan Barnes who served alongside Steve Rogers. The pardon goes under the information that James Barnes was held against his will and brainwashed into committing the crimes under the guise of the Winter Soldier. While we await for more information regarding this matter, it has been confirmed that he remains at the Avengers tower until further action of the pardon is to be taken”
The coverage continued to go into detail about HYDRA and what they had done to turn James Buchanan Barnes into the Winter Soldier.
Tears rolled down your face at the information on the screen. Steve was right. A sob broke out at the thought of that. Steve was right and you had given up on him. You had given up on your soulmate. You had tried to move on with your life while he suffered. You hand reached out to grip the couch in front of you as your knees felt weak. The pain in your chest was so heavy you could not breathe. Looking up at the screen, you saw the list of things that they did to him. That they did to your soulmate. Your vision went spotty as you rushed to the bathroom and threw up your breakfast.
When you had nothing left in your body you pulled your hair out of your face as you laid down on the cold tile of the floor. You laid there until you felt the buzzing of your phone against the tile. Looking at caller ID your heart stopped in your throat. You sat up as you answered the phone.
“Steve?” your voice coming out harshly.
“Hi” he replied immediately, his voice causing you to bite back more tears
“Hi” you whispered back not believing that he was actually calling you. All the hours you waited by the phone only for it to be silent.
“Did you see the news on channel ... .well every channel” he said humorously, you could hear whispering in the background but you didn’t question it.
“Yes. Is it true?” your voice hoarse from throwing up and sobbing.
“Yes” you could hear the smile in his voice. “We got him back” he whispered softly.
You couldn’t stop the smile on your face as you felt a swirl of emotions in your chest. Tears streamed down your face at the thought that Steve was reunited with his friend and that Bucky was safe and free. Sniffing and rubbing your face you listened as he ranted about the last three weeks not interrupting as you waited until he mentioned him again.
“He wants to meet you” Steve said anxiously, like he was scared of your reaction
Your breath got stuck in your throat. Shame bloomed in your chest. You had given up on him and now he wants to meet you. Something that you settled on never happening. Your silence prompted Steve to continue.
“He hasn’t stopped asking about you, you know. It killed him to know that you thought he didn’t want you” he said softly
Your hand covered your mouth as you bit back a sob in your chest.
“Ok” you whispered
“Would you like to come by today?” Steve continued
“If not I totally understand. It’s totally last minute and you probably have a million things to do. Just let me know what works best for-”
“Today is good for me” you said softly, still not believing that this is happening.
“Thank God. You do not know that crap I would’ve gotten if I didn’t convince you” Steve joked lightly laughing anxiously.
Your grip on the phone tightens as the anxiety begins rushing through your body. What if he didn’t want you. He saw you that day on the street. He knew you and knew you were his and still left.
That wasn’t him.
The memories of Steve’s voice soothing you. You breathed shakily as you listened to Steve try and send you the address of the tower through his flip phone. You could hear the noises of frustration from your side of the phone.
“I know where the Avengers tower is” you emphasized ‘Avengers’ humorously. Moving to stand up you gripped the counter as you stood, your whole body was still shaky.
Steve laughed awkwardly at that.
“That was kind of stupid of me huh? Well please let me know when you get here I am very excited to see you again” You could hear a voice in the background.
“We are very excited to see you again” Steve’s voice was playful as he said goodbye and ended the call.
You barely gave yourself time to think as you quickly brushed your teeth and untangled your hair. Making sure you didn’t smell like you had just thrown up everything in your body you grabbed your bag and keys and practically ran out of the house.
The drive to Manhattan from D.C was long and backed up as people made their way into the city for work. The whole drive you made sure to keep the music louder than your thoughts cause you knew if you started spirally about seeing him you would send yourself into a panic attack. But nothing could prepare you for when you entered the city and could see the Avengers Tower towering over the surrounding buildings. Your heart began racing as you entered the parking lot below the floors of the tower.
You tried to focus on your breathing to stop the panic attack but your breaths still came out short and shaky. With shaky hands you dialed a number on your phone and focused on the ringing instead of your racing heart.
“Are you here?” Steve’s voice filtered through the phone.
“I don’t think I can do this” You voice came out shakily as your tried not to let tears fall
“I’ll be right there” You heard movements on the other side of the phone before you heard the phone click.
You rested your head against the steering wheel counting up to four each time as you breathed. It only took 4 long breaths before you heard light tapping on the window. Your head whipped up to find Steve there looking at you with a soft smile. You turned off the car before opening the door and stepping out.
“I’m sorry for calling you. I just didn’t know what to do” your voice wavering as your breathing worsened.
You felt Steve lightly reach out and grab your arm in an act of reassurance.
“Don't be, you did the right thing! That’s why you have my number remember” He laughed softly while smiling at you.
You simply nodded, your breathing steadied as you felt your heart beat strongly in your chest. One final deep breath before Steve gestured if you were ready to continue.
You walked with Steve as he rambled about certain aspects of the building why we passed them. You marveled at the technology and the grandeur of the tower but your mind was really only truly focused on one thing.
Suddenly as you reached the top of the tower, Steve suddenly stopped and looked down at you.
“Listen, just take it easy on him. He is here but he is not the same Bucky as I knew. Not yet” Steve’s voice wavered as he spoke.
“Just give him a chance. Please” Desperation coating his voice.
You simply reached out your hand and squeezed his, providing him the same reassurance he gave you. He paused for a second, giving you a soft smile before knocking on the door in front of you.
You held your breath as the door opened slowly, revealing the same soldier you saw on the street just weeks ago. He wore none of the combat gear that you saw him in. Instead he was in a long sleeve shirt with a pair of jeans, he looked comfortable. You felt his stare long before you met his eyes. Which were now looking down at you softly.
You let down a deep breath, your chest falling as you looked at him for the first time truly. His face held none of the hardness as the Winter Soldier.
He looked human
He looked beautiful
Your mouth was wide open as you admired him which didn’t escape the notice of Steve as you heard a soft laugh beside you. Quickly regaining composure you shut your mouth and gave him a soft smile.
“Hi” you said so softly it might as well have been a whisper.
Bucky’s chest shuttered at the sound of your voice. He could not believe you were standing in front of him. You were the most beautiful woman he has ever laid eyes on and you were all his. That was the most devastating news of all. He didn’t deserve you not in this world. Not in any of them.
“Hi” his voice rocked through your body warming your cheeks.
You looked down softly not wanting him to see.
Suddenly a voice next to you broke your trance.
“Guess you don’t have to worry about if she is a dog or cat person” Steve’s laugh filled the halls.
Looking at him with a sideways look you realize as you look down at yourself. You didn’t bother changing from the outfit you would wear to the dog shelter. Dressed in black leggings and an oversized white tee with the words ‘I PET DOGS’ bolded with bright pink letters.
Your cheeks deepened in color as you groaned at the realization covering your shirt by crossing your arms over your chest. Bucky looked down at you with a soft smile, his blue eyes sparkling in a way that made your heart throb. He was devastating to look at.
“As much as I want all of this silence to continue. The team is expecting to meet you right about now” Steve said, checking his watch.
You looked nervously between Bucky and Steve at the thought of meeting the infamous Avengers. You weren’t sure what they wanted to meet you for. Bucky said nothing as he stepped into the hallway moving to follow Steve to the living room. He waited for Steve to turn his back on the two of you until he gestured to you to walk alongside him.
Your heart was beating out of your chest with anxiety. Between him and the team you’ve had enough for a lifetime.
Suddenly you felt the cold bite of metal brushing against your fingertips. You straightened up at the feeling of glancing at your soulmate next to you who was looking at you with a weird look in his eyes. A mixture of comfort and affection that you thought you imagined as he eyed the door in front of you with a familiar coldness.
As you walked down the hall you chased that feeling of coldness. A warm feeling flowed through your chest which brought a small smile to your face that you weren’t ready to admit.

Chapter 1 - Seared Names
You felt the sun shining down on you as you walked out onto the busy street. Working for a prestigious law firm in downtown D.C had its perks but getting out during peak traffic hour was not one of them. The street was bustling with many different characters all getting off of work from white collars to the barista from your local coffee shop. You watched as she smiled and jogged to a man across the street holding flowers and brightly smiling back at her, which you assumed to be her soulmate.
It was rare for someone to be in a relationship with someone that wasn’t their soulmate. Whether it be their soulmate rejected them or they simply did not have one, which was even rarer. Your heart ached at the sight of the pair in front of you.
At the age of 26, you were constantly met with worried looks from your family about the fact that you haven’t found your soulmate yet. As much as you try to console them that you’re fine it has been harder to ignore the aching pain and emptiness in your heart that you wake up to every day. You shook your head slightly to rid that thought as you passed the couple. You barely made it past the coffee shop when the world exploded.
Your ears were ringing so loud you couldn’t hear the gunshots around you but you felt them as they hit the street beside you. Gasping you threw yourself into the side of the car to protect yourself from the shower of bullets. Your heart was in your throat as you screwed your eyes shut bracing for the impact of one of the bullets that slammed into the car you were pressed into. Suddenly you heard the crashing of metal beside you, your head twisting so fast to the sound you didn’t have a chance to recognize the metal disc before it was picked up and thrown across the street nor the man who threw it.
Your heart was beating so fast you were convinced that if a bullet wasn’t the cause of your death a heart attack would be. Suddenly the street was eerily silent as the rain of fire ceased. You slowly looked over the car to see what had happened. You saw two men standing still staring at each other, one dressed in typical street clothes while the other was dressed head to toe in combat gear with one arm completely made of metal. Your world stilled when he locked eyes with you. You felt a burning on your chest and your heart stopped. You knew what was now seared onto the skin above your heart. His name. Your soulmate.
You watched as he completely stopped, knowing he could feel the same burn on his chest. His face softened as his eyes stayed glued onto your as the other man spoke to him.
“Bucky, it's me” the man pleaded, desperation in his voice.
Bucky, your soulmate’s name is Bucky
Reality slammed into you as you watched him turn his gaze to the man. His face hardened as he looked at him with no emotion in his eyes.
“Who is Bucky?” he growled as he lifted up the gun towards the other man with you in his sight line.
The other man turned towards you and ran to you holding up the metal disc in front of both of you to block the line of fire. You recognized the metal as the shield of Captain America, you barely had time to process the fact that the man shielding you from your soulmate was Steve Rogers.
You braced yourself for the sound of the gunshots. You waited for a minute and were only met with a deafening silence. You waited as Steve looked above the shield for the sign of Bucky. You slowly stood up and were met with the sight of a deserted street. You let out a heavy breath as the shock of your soulmate being the one who did this.
Nearby buildings were decimated, shattered glass lining the pavements. Bullet holes lined every car on the street and your heart shattered when you heard the groans of the injured behind you.
“Are you alright Ma'am?” You heard Steve speak.
You didn’t look up at him as your shaking fingers slowly unbutton your shirt to look at the skin below your collarbone. You heard a sharp gasp beside you as you uncovered the name now permanently seared onto your body.
James Buchanan Barnes
You looked up to find Steve staring at you with disbelief, his face heavy with emotion. You held back the choking sob stuck in your throat as he looked at you with pity in his eyes.
“You’re his” he said breathlessly as his eyes switched quickly between the mark and your eyes like he didn’t know if you were actually in front of him.
You swallowed uncomfortably as you buttoned up your shirt a tear rolling down your face. Quickly wiping your tears from your face you tried and failed at regaining your composure.
“You’re Captain America” you said with a sad smile trying desperately to cut through the tension. Even more so trying to get him to stop looking at you like your world just shattered in front of you.
He stifled a humorless laugh as he looked up at you, his shield resting causally at his side.
“I am” he gave you a light smile watching you carefully like he didn’t know if you were going to break down crying any second.
Pulling your hair out of your face and tucking the loose parts over your ears, trying to look somewhat presentable in front of the avenger. You could laugh at yourself for worrying about what you look like after a day like this.
Steve reached out to lightly touch your arm.
“Please, can we go somewhere and talk about this? I need to explain everything” his voice coated with the same desperation as when he talked to Bucky. Or James you suppose.
You looked at him with a sad smile as you crouched down to gather your bag.
“What is there to talk about? He didn’t want me” you spoke softly the words stabbing you as you said them. Your brain couldn’t even process the fact that your soulmate injured people and tried to kill you. But despite this you didn’t know if you could’ve left him like he left you. You hated yourself for it.
“That wasn’t him. Please you have to believe me, that wasn't Bucky” Steve pleaded with you almost sounding like he was trying to convince himself as well.
“When we were young all he ever talked about was you. He would constantly guess what you were doing right in that moment, what you looked like, if you would like dogs or cats more” Steve continued, his face lighting up with the memories that he and Bucky shared.
You didn’t know you were crying until you felt the tears roll down your neck.
“You were all he ever thought. He would never leave you. Please, just let me try to fix this” Steve grabbed your hand in his as he spoke.
You were grounded in place at the thought of the man Steve described as your soulmate. As Bucky. That he ached for his soulmate as much as you longed for him. You felt like you could hardly breathe at the thought of a happy life with him.
You silently nodded. Watching as Steve’s face softened with relief. Reaching into his pocket he pulled out a flip phone and handed it to you as a gesture for your number. You bristled at the old technology as you typed in your number and handed it back to him.
“Please call me for anything at all. Even if you just need someone to talk to” Steve spoke in a genuine almost pleading tone. You smiled softly at him clutching your bag to stop him from noticing how hard your hands were shaking.
“Thank you” you spoke softly
Steve nodded and didn’t try to stop you as you walked past him on shaky legs. With him out of earsight, you let out a heavy sob. Your heavy heart and the name on your skin kept you company as you walked home.

Calina had always had a strong affinity to the moon and everything that surrounds it. She believed that it was because her mother named her after the moon. She would spend nights in the Russian wilderness, a place in which she called home, bathing in the moonlight until eventually her father would find her asleep outside at dusk, cursing her for forgetting her coat and coaxing her into the warmth of her home.
Nights where the moon was at its fullest were Calina’s favorite. That's why when she woke up to her head pounding and her ears ringing, she felt nothing but peace.
The light of the full moon cast down on her face as she took in her surroundings and for the first time since she gained consciousness, felt her body.
Suddenly, she felt the coldness of the snow nipping at her back through her clothes. Pain radiating from every part of her body and her head felt too heavy to pick up from the snow. She felt like screaming, crying, and throwing up all at once.
Because worst of all she remembered. Remembered everything.
Her dad. The militia. The raid. The explosion.
Anger and grief fueled her body as she rose from the ground. Fire burned all around her as the place that held her captive for the past two years burned to the ground along with her captors inside.
For the first time in two years she was outside and had no idea where she was. She didn’t even know if she was still in Russia.
Suddenly a twig snapped behind her, gasping as she turned around with her fists formed in some protective stance. Her heart almost jumped out of her chest as she took in the masked giant in front of her donned in military attire. She wasn’t entirely sure that her punch would even tickle the man but she continued to keep them in front of her.
When König was first informed of the rescue mission in the middle of nowhere during the nastiest winter Russia has seen in 20 years he thought nothing of it. For a man of his size nothing seems to faze him. However, when the chopper dropped them off within the perimeter the intensity of the situation hit him.
“‘Just another mission’ huh big guy?” Soap chitteered towards him as he noticed the change in König’s demeanor.
Ghost huffed beside him, “You should never underestimate the cold. Would rather get hit with 10 bullets before my dick freezes off”
“Wouldn’t want some Russian kid to mistake it for the nose of their snowman would you?” Soap bickered back laughing as Ghost rolled his eyes in response.
“Focus up now, this is an extraction only mission. Remove the girl safely with minimal risk. That means not shooting for the sake of it. After the extraction has been confirmed, meet at the meet up spot and wait for the signal” Price stands at the entrance of the chopper signaling for his team to drop.
The team stealthy drops from the chopper and once they reach the ground static from the comms fill their ears as Price gives them a farewell.
The team rounded the perimeter as they approached the small cottage in the middle of the forest. König didn’t feel right about this extraction and he couldn’t shoulder the feeling as he gave Ghost coverage to the opening of the cottage.
As they breached, König felt uneasy as he didn’t hear Soap come in on the comms confirming entry. Ghost turned back to look at him, giving him a confused look. A loud noise within the cottage made them inch their way inside. The walls were decorated with weapons of all kinds, ranging from international military warfare to underground black market weapons.
Ghost and König suddenly heard Soap's voice yelling in the distance. Before they could even make their way to his side, someone ran right into Ghost's arms knocking him down as he was taken by surprise. König immediately had his weapon drawn at the intruder but quickly lowered it as he confirmed that it was the girl that they were supposed to extract.
She fought against Ghost but as soon as she saw that he was not her kidnapper she quieted down enough for Ghost and König to quickly evacuate the cottage. Running out into the snow they heard gunshots fired from the windows and immediately threw themselves to the ground to shield themselves from the bullets. After it went quiet, König looked towards his teammate to make sure him or the girl were hit but he was surprised to only see Ghost beside him. Looking around he quickly spotted the girl running away from the cottage.
Standing to go after her, he was immediately taken down again by a hot blast behind him. That's when he knew he was absolutely fucked.
“не двигайся! кто ты?” Calina’s hot breath turned into frost as she confronted the man.
“My name is König. I was a part of the mission designed to extract you” An accented voice replied.
Calina felt goosebumps crawl up her arms as he spoke and she did everything to convince herself that it was the Russian winter and not the deepness of his voice.
“How do I know if you’re telling the truth?” Calina’s arms are still raised in front of her in a protective stance weary of König.
König said nothing but instead reached into his tactical vest pulling out a gold necklace. Calina's heart dropped as she recognized the necklace that her mother would always wear before she passed away. Her father always kept it on his person like it was the most important thing in the world. Dropping her hands to her side, König stepped forward and dropped the necklace into the palm of her hand. Calina tried not to let the memories of her father resurface to prevent embarrassing herself in front of some man she didn't even know.
Suddenly, she felt hands around her waist as König pulled her behind him with his gun pointed into the darkness of the woods. Calina held in a breath as she tried to look around König's back to see what the threat was. If her kidnappers survived the explosion and were coming back for her. A chill ran down her spine at the thought of going back.
"Friendly!" Another masked man appeared from the forest, he wasn't as big as König but he still towered over her. She could tell from the uniform and the way that König's body relaxed against her that König knew this man.
"Ghost what the hell. I could've shot you" The man named Ghost stepped closer to them and she realized that he had on a different kind of baclava on than König. Where König's was a blank material Ghost had a skull painted on the front of it.
"Have you made any communication?" Ghost questioned his teammate.
"I tried the line but got no response. The comms must be down. The area is clear I haven't spotted anyone else, we would have to get to higher ground" Both König and Ghost glanced up the mountain beside them. Calina followed their gaze, growing up the mountains were forbidden during the winter. The fresh snow was harder and more dangerous to climb than compacted snow, making those who do climb the mountain idiotic in the face of the elders. Calina could hear her Babushka warn her about the dangers of the winters and honestly she didn't know what her Babushka would do in this situation but she knows what she would do. What she has to do.
"We should go up that path" Calina poked out from behind König to gesture to the trail underneath the thick trees. Ghost looked surprised at her appearance and looked to König but König must've said it all with a look because he didn't otherwise say anything.
"As you say, I will lead the way. Stay close"
Calina couldn’t describe why being surrounded by two giants of men lit a fire in her stomach rather than make her scared. Pushing the thought off to the lack of human contact and touch within the last two years she tried to ignore the feeling of Ghost against her back following her up the mountain with König in front of her blocking the downward wind.
However, the three of them stop suddenly as they hear a huge crack in the earth. Like it was the call of her people, Calina knew instantly what it meant and grabbed König in front of her, throwing him back onto a rock beside them.
“Avalanche!” Calina yelled to Ghost behind her as she reached to pull him to safety but instead of finding him standing behind her he had lost his footing and was fighting against the loose snow.
Calina hurriedly reached down to grab his hand but as they connected hands she quickly realized that she was not strong enough to hold onto his body weight against the pull of the avalanche and she was quickly pulled forward against the rock at the added weight.
Bracing for the coldness of the snow, she was surprised at the sudden heat against her entire body. Blood rushed to her cheeks as she realized that König was practically laying on top of her body reaching for his team mate and preventing her from falling into the avalanche. Pure muscles worked above her as König pulled Ghost onto the rock. Trying to calm the fire in her stomach, she rolled out from under König after Ghost was pulled to safety.
“You got quick reflexes,” Ghost said to her as he brushed off the snow from the layers of tactical wear.
“I grew up in these woods, it was mostly muscle memory” Calina avoided looking into their eyes trying to calm her beating heart.
“Either way you saved our lives. We are in your debt” König looked at her in a way that made her want to combust. She hated how seductive that sounded and she absolutely loathed the way Ghost was staring at her like he could read her mind.
Not trusting her voice she quickly stood up, instantly feeling a rush of ice cold air on her face. Coldness seeped into her bones from the lack of protective clothing. The light jacket and linen pants did next to nothing at keeping her warm and as the adrenaline in her body wore off the more she was being affected by it.
Ghost noticed her body shaking from the cold and the strong urge to protect her almost knocked him off his feet. He tried to remind himself that she is a part of their extraction and nothing else but the way that her scent carries over to him as the wind goes through her hair and the feel of her body pressed against him as she unconsciously goes behind him to block herself from the wind makes him want to abandon all sense of control.
However, he realized that he wasn’t the only one feeling that way as he looked at his teammate finding a similar light in his eyes as he remained locked on the woman cowardly behind him.
Shaking off the thought, Ghost searches out in the distance for any form of shelter to get her, them, out of this weather. Looking through his NVG’s he finds a small shed located half a mile away. It looked small for the three of them but it would have to work.
“There is shelter to get through the night, just half a mile north” König nods to Ghost to lead that way allowing Calina to get in between them once more.
Calina tried to calm her shivering offering the thought of persevering for half a mile and then she could be warm. But she knew that to be unlikely, the only shelter she can imagine in such an isolated place is not livable. Meaning she will not be sleeping in a bed nor among thick blankets she doubted they would even be able to light a fire, the realization of that almost sent her to tears.
She trained her eyes on the back of Ghost, noticing his body also being affected by the cold. His body visibly vibrated from shivering, his arms stretched across his chest trying to preserve body heat. Calina quickly sobered up from the cold and realized that these men were not born and raised through Russia’s winter. Her body and blood was born for these mountains. The softness of her body was made to combat these temperatures.
However, these men were made of pure muscle and none of the softness that kept her somewhat warm. By the time they reached the shed the toughest members of the 141 were broken down into two trembling masses. Calina quickly rushed towards the door of the shed and pulled it open against the wind. Ghost and König shuffled in while she closed the door making sure no wind could creep in.
König had never felt so cold in his life. He could feel it in his blood clinging to his bone. It was embarrassing that he couldn’t stop shaking. His hands vibrated against him as he stood on wobbly knees.
He has crossed the most dangerous of organizations, the deadliest of humans, and yet this night the cold will finish him off.
It was humbling to say the least, to watch a woman that has experienced nothing but solitude and isolation amongst her own fathers murderers for the last two years was handling this better than him. He and Ghost watched as she searched the shed for any blankets or extra clothes, though they doubted they would fit either man.
Tears were forming in Calina’s eyes as she pulled a thick soft blanket from under a box. She could almost laugh as she realized that she would be able to survive through the night. For the first time that night she was finally able to relax and for the first time in two years she was able to sleep knowing she was safe. Turning to Ghost and König, she held the blanket in front of her proudly as a way to show them that they were probably not going to die tonight. Suddenly all thoughts left her brain as she finally realized the situation in front of her.
She would have to sleep with them. In this small shed. Sharing one blanket.
A familiar heat arose in her stomach at the thought of being sandwiched between these giants. A moan almost escaped her as she could imagine the warmth of being between them.
Sometime in between the time of entering the shed to her finding the blanket, Ghost and König had both removed their wet clothes leaving them both in long pants that were under their uniform. Both males were shirtless and for the first time Calina realized that she could see their faces.
Her mouth remained open as her eyes filtered between the two of them. They were devastatingly handsome in a roguish way that she expected. As she moved towards them she realized the height difference felt much more as they towered over her.
“You should remove your clothes” König’s voice rattled.
Looking down at her clothes she noticed that the bottom of her pants and top were soaked from the avalanche and being pressed against the snowy rock.
She refused to remember the feeling of being pinned by König.
“Don’t fear you can trust us. You will get sick if you sleep in those wet clothes, liebling” König’s voice was gentle as he grabbed the blanket. Ghost quickly gathered some hay from the corner to soften the cold hard ground beneath them. König handed Ghost the blanket as he settled on the hay waiting for Calina and König.
König was gentle in helping Calina out of her shirt and pants. He didn’t miss the way she covered her belly or chest after getting out of her wet clothes and König didn’t miss the way his heart squeezed against his chest at the sight of her.
Calina’s heart was beating fast as she felt ghosts of König’s fingertips against her body. She tried to not feel embarrassed about her body as more of it became revealed. She definitely tried not to think of running back out in the storm when she realized that she didn’t have a bra on. She faced König and Ghost bare chested and was surprised when she wasn’t met with total disgust.
Instead, König looked at her with a hunger and awe in his eyes while Ghost just looked like he wanted to devour her. Their attention almost made her feel warm but a sudden gust of wind knocked against the house making the shed feel like an ice box. A violent shiver racked through her as König held out his hand gesturing to the makeshift bed of hay that Ghost was occupying.
Calina settled on the floor facing Ghost leaving some room between them. However, that served no purpose as König squeezed in beside her pushing her body flush to the front of Ghost while König was pressed against her back. Warmth immediately seeped into the three of them as König covered them with the thick blanket that thankful was big enough to cover all of them.
A silence filled the air as Calina was trying not to freak out at being sandwiched between two of the hottest giants she has ever come across. She could feel the ripple of their muscles as they both shuffled to make themselves more comfortable in such a limited space. She remained as stiff as a board as they adjusted themselves hoping that they can’t feel her body in such an intimate space.
A warm arm stretched out behind her and tightly wrapped around her torso pulling her snuggly the hard chest behind her. She let out a gasp at the feeling of being pressed to every inch of König’s body, trying not to think of what König thinks of the skin beneath his hands.
Ghost watched as Calina blushed at the feeling of being held in such an intimate way. He wondered how long it had been since someone held her like this, since someone cared for her. Reaching his hand out, he ghosted his fingertips across her hairline down to her brows. She was looking at him so softly it made his heart squeeze beneath his chest. He could feel her chest rising and falling against his own and tried to not think about the way that it affected him.
Nearly impossible to get closer, Ghost gently grabbed her arm that was pressed against his chest and guided it around his waist. He could feel her hesitate before she completely melted against him. She nuzzled her head into his chest and wrapped her leg over his own. The thoughts in his head were going static but he ignored them as he leaned down to press a smile against her hairline.
Calina was absolutely buzzing from the attention, she felt absolute warmth rush through her body and sit in her chest. A smile permanently etched on her face as she felt the pull of sleep.
Ghost and König watched as she fell asleep and went limp in their arms, their hearts fluttering when they saw the smile that she held in her sleep. Neither looked at each other but both knew they were thinking the same thoughts.
Saving the conversation for another day, they followed Calina into the depths of sleep.
