In 2016 the Bologna Children's Book Fair celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Bologna Illustrator's Exhibition. In honour of this special event the fair organizes an exhibition of 50 original works by 50 of the world greatest illustrators, who have participated in the exhibition in the past. In other words, artists that have made the history of illustration. Artists and Masterpieces of Illustration -50 Illustratorsâ Exhibitions 1967-2016 is the title of the exhibition and it will also be the title of the book that will trace the history of the Illustratorsâ Exhibition.
Klaas Verplancke is the only Flemish illustrator selected for this prestigious exhibition. The original illustrations from the picture book hit Applesauce, which has been published in 14 translations all over the world, can be admired, next to the work by other internationally reknown illustrators like Bruno Munari, Roberto Innocenti, Quentin Blake and Shaun Tan. The exhibition wants to show 'the very best illustrations from around the world that have featured at the heart of the Fair'.
