Bosniaks across the world will use today as a day of mourning in honor of the Srebrenica Genocide and all those lost to the war in Bosnia.

Despite all this there will be many who choose not to acknowledge this day and even some who will be annoyed by the influx of posts. For all those people all I have to say is that you are not just ignoring a couple reblogs, tweets, or instagram posts, you are activity choosing to disregard the pain and suffering the Bosnian Muslim community. And that we will continue to speak out so that this tragedy will never be forgotten.

But I recently asked one of my closest friends: How old were you when you realized driving through Bosna that the amount of mezara (grave yards) we have isn’t normal?

Because - especially where we’re both from - dotted across the beautiful landscape and comforting villages is grave after grave.

Her response was pretty similar to mine: “When I was six. I remember asking my dad why some are green and why some have white stones. I’ve been noticing it more now that I’m older of course.”

It’s the impact of war you don’t really expect - that 30 years later your children are going to have to put two and two together. And something that felt like home becomes so incredibly saddening.

There’s probably more to this; I certainly haven’t gotten to the meat of my thoughts. But it’s something I want to touch on as we’re a couple of months away from Srebrenica Remembrance Walks.

Okay, so,

I don't know how much of this I want to share, but i need it off my chest bc it's the main thing people talk about in my country.

For context, my city of Sarajevo (BiH) is the only city that has a tram network running for fourty odd years. In that time we had the chance to have new and modern trams with alarms, more seats, station announcer etc. but for some goddamn reason, they didn't stop using these old, rusty ass trains from before the goddamn aggression on Bosnia.

So Friday last week (I was on a mandatory checkup on the other side of town), one of the old trams sped up and couldn't stop. The tram jumped out on the curve and sled across the damn pavement right infront of the station. It did not fall over but it has claimed the life of one young man and cost a girl her leg.

The driver was arrested, but it wasn't his fault he was driving an ancient ass fucking machine that barely worked. He was freed, but that poor guy is going to have life long trauma because two lives were affected because of the tram he was driving. As for the young man, he will very likely have a memorial in order. And the girl had just woken up in the hospital and these cock suckers had the audacity to use an ai generated image for a girl that was nearly killed a few days ago to notify us she's alive.

Just read on TikTok “Remember your education is also a form of protest” and it just hits so hard.

As a daughter of immigrants and refugees watching all that’s occurring in the U.S. it’s a good reminder to all of us just how important education is. It’s something they can never take away from us. And even when it seems inaccessible it’s still out there.

I remember my grandfather telling me how terrible he felt leaving school before the age of 15 to work and provide for his family. But even in those times when food was barely on the table he managed to teach himself. He’s still one of the smartest, well spoken people I know.

My mom grew up during genocide. Her house was bombed, village surrounded by armed forces. She still proudly boasts how she’d stay up with candle light studying and when the war was finally over passed all her nursing requirements with flying colors. Despite this all, her high school education and nursing degree were not accepted in America because of the instability and uncertainty in which she obtained them. But that love of learning never left and she’s one of my greatest inspirations to follow a career in healthcare.

And I’m here complaining about the chance to take an expensive exam. When really I should be grateful that we survived to be able to allow me to take it let alone have the money to register for the MCAT.

This is just a ramble and a gentle reminder to myself more than anyone that we are the future our parents fought for. It’s something to remember now more than ever.

Not to get corny but as I’ve been hyping myself up to get deeper and deeper into MCAT prep I’ve found it incredibly motivating to look through texts from my support system.

If you’re blessed to have a good one it’s a tactic I highly recommend. Some days I cannot find the motivation to push myself to do the studying for me. But remembrance of the people rooting for you is a pretty powerful tool in my book. It doesn’t even have to be encouragement about studying! Nice comments are nice comments regardless what they’re about!! 🙂

Dick is always available on the phone. He may roll his eyes at yet another call from his brothers, just to complain, but he will always answer and always let his siblings speak.

Dick will answer a hundred, a thousand ordinary, unimportant calls, but he will never miss an important one again.

One day he smashes the phone, and when half an hour later he recovers Jason’s missed call, he immediately calls back, his hands shaking.

Dick: Is everything okay? Where are you?

Jason: Stop! I'm fine, I just wanted to ask if you want to patrol together today?

Dick, almost crying: Yes, yes, of course, of course I want to.

Jason hangs up and stares at the phone for a long time. In the evening, he meets his brother and hugs him. Dick clings to him with all his might.
