hey hsr fandom. before 4.3 comes out i need us all to understand that “blade doesn’t want to be called yingxing” is not evidence that he is literally a different person. it is evidence of EXTREME self-loathing and dehumanization. i genuinely think some of yall flatten trauma responses into the most surface-level reading imaginable.

blade rejecting the name yingxing is not a philosophical declaration of “that person and i are entirely unrelated entities,” it’s the exact opposite. it’s the behavior of someone who hates himself so profoundly that they believe they no longer deserve to be associated with the person they once were.

yingxing was beloved. cherished by the high-cloud quintet. he was someone master huaiyan as well as many artisans remember fondly centuries later. someone dan feng trusted deeply enough to commit the greatest sin of his life beside him. someone baiheng adored. someone who once had pride in his craftsmanship and dreams and relationships.

and then he was mutilated by immortality and turned into something he considers monstrous (especially since, mind you, he endured discrimination from long-life species). jingliu quite literally reinforces this worldview over and over by repeatedly reducing him to a “monster,” a weapon forged for vengeance, a sinner who must suffer eternally. his entire current identity is built on punishment. he is someone who genuinely believes that the current version of himself is fundamentally corrupted and unworthy.

“well blade said he’s not yingxing and dislikes being called that :)” okay? traumatized people rejecting their former identity because they cannot psychologically bear the contrast between who they were and what they’ve become is an EXTREMELY common not only actual real psychological response but also narrative trope? especially in stories about immortality and loss of humanity.

“blade and yingxing are totally separate” reinforces the exact dehumanization his arc is criticizing. blade IS yingxing after centuries of suffering stripped him down until he could no longer recognize himself as someone worthy of love, humanity, or forgiveness. and the heartbreaking part is that traces of yingxing are STILL THERE despite everything.

reinforcing “he’s not yingxing at all” just plays directly into the mentality blade already has about himself: that the person he once was is dead, unreachable, undeserved, and that the only thing left is a monster wearing his corpse.

and i do not think the narrative wants us to agree with him when he says that about himself!!!

People keep approaching the red spider lily in relation to Blade through a purely Chinese folkloric lens, which. Understandable, given the obvious cultural proximity and the way the flower is commonly framed in modern East Asian media as a “flower of death,” separation, and unreachable longing. That reading is not wrong.

But it is also incomplete in a way that flattens a much older and more structurally relevant layer of meaning that his narrative keeps circling back to, especially with his SP form.

Because once you step into the Buddhist framework that the flower originates from, especially its Sanskrit associations (Manjusaka / 曼珠沙华), the symbolism becomes completely different!

The flower is not simply “death” as an endpoint. It is not a marker of hell, nor a warning of moral or existential damnation.

It is tied instead to the idea of the “other shore” (彼岸), which is not a euphemism for death, but a metaphysical threshold between states of existence. Crucially, that threshold is not morally coded as hellbound (contrary to Chinese culture, where the flower blooms explicitly in Hell). It is a passage that includes rebirth, ascent, and even heavenly realms within its scope. The “other shore” is not a place where things end, but a conceptual boundary where transformation occurs.

I really want to make a post about all of Blade’s cultural references...but perhaps that is best saved for when 4.3 comes out, eh?

If you are a Dottoscara shipper specifically talking about Dottolone being sum "just Dottoscara repackaged" I genuinely think they should legally allow me one free hit with a folding chair because WHAT THE FUCK are you TALKING about 😭😭😭

"Repackaged" because they both contain Dottore????? Bitch by that logic every Childe ship is the same because he's also there smiling in the middle of it. What similarity do these ships have beyond "both contain Dottore"???

Dottoscara is fundamentally built on tragedy, bitterness, resentment, manipulation, abandonment, creator/creation themes, identity crises and a relationship so catastrophically toxic it permanently altered Scaramouche's worldview. Their dynamic revolves around exploitation and dehumanization and the horror of being used.

Dottolone meanwhile is literally about a man who has spent his entire life being viewed as fundamentally inhuman meeting another morally rotten freak who looks at him and goes "okay and?" 😭

What kills me is half the time the accusation is transparently "I'm mad another ship with Dottore has themes people find compelling" WHICH IS FINE!!! But at least be honest instead of saying shit so media illiterate it causes me physical damage?

Especially because Dottolone's entire dynamic hinges on something Dottoscara fundamentally DOESN'T have: Pantalone seeing Dottore as human even while knowing exactly how monstrous he is.

These are not the same fucking meal.

And before somebody starts foaming at the mouth YES both are toxic. Congratulations on discovering Dottore is involved, next you will tell me water is wet.

Also to the person who asked me what the appeal/relationship dynamic of Dottoscara actually is, I SAW YOU!!! I will probably answer that soon because I do actually have Thoughts™ and I think people flatten that ship too much into either "abuse yaoi" or "misunderstood soulmates" when the whole thing is significantly weirder and more narratively specific than either of those extremes. HOWEVER I currently have like twelve more important agenda posts clawing at the walls of my skull demanding to be released first and priorities include Sunday.

something I noticed and found very interesting is that when dottore and pantalone shake hands, they shake their left hands

historically the left hand was seen as the sinister/evil hand. you shake right hands to make righteous and good deals and from that we can infer that they are making a sinister pact, which is quite a nice detail to add

in addition, people shook right hands since most people used their weapon with the right hand, which could symbolize that even though they are cooperating, they are not letting their guard down around each other and are prepared to strike

Thinking about it, Blade is the funniest character for the creators to whore out considering hundreds of years ago some lizard locked him down (fairly young!) with a telepathic bracer and he's been obsessively committed ever since. Even in his hater-phase he was still laser focused on that one man and being (dying) with him. Turbo monogamy in action, he took those vows seriously

And he keeps talking to the Trailblazer like he's a grandfather. That too.

AND WHAT'S MORE he doesn't even do it in a cool, mysterious "ancient immortal warrior" way half the time! He's just out here like a stressed Victorian widower who got reincarnated without a kiss and is STILL mad about it! You cannot tell me this man is not one "where is he?" away from short-circuiting the entire Stellaron Hunters' communication system.

Turbo monogamy is actually underselling it at this point, more like spiritual tenancy. He lives there permanently, no lease expiration.

During the quest I love how Pantalone is insinsistent on Dottore's humanity. Dottore always viewed himself as a monster wearing human skin but Pantalone has seen all of Dottore. The good and the bad and despite all Dottore's evil deeds he sees Dottore for what he is. Human.

Omega being a segment of the original Dottore makes him feel more disconected from being a human. He says that he is Dottore. Not Zandik. Seperating himself from the original.

But clearly he still sees himself as Zandik. For example we see he signs using that name. He even admits he is Zandik at times. He sees himself as Zandik but he walks around fully admitting it. For him Zandik represents being human. He struggles with his humanity and identity just in a different way then the other Dottore's did.

But in the end when Dottore is dying Pantalone asks him what he would like to be called. Pantalone will use whatever name he wishes. Dottore gives Pantalone the choice and Dottore says goodbye using Pantalone's real name. He sees Pantalone as human so of course he uses his name and Pantalone as someone who sees Dottore as human uses his real name in response.

They see each other for who they truly are and they wanted to show that to each other. Thats why Pantalone gives him the choice.

And when Dottore is talking to Nahida he finally admits what none of the other Dottore's could and sturggled with. That he is human.

An addition to this: the scene in which Pantalone says he pities anyone who calls Dottore a "compatriot," while a correct translation, does not convey the intended meaning of Pantalone seeing Dottore as a human.

"Compatriot" generally refers to a legal citizen of a place. Which doesn't really fit for the context of what Pantalone actually called him, which was "同胞" (tóngbāo).

It is made of 同 (tóng) = same, together, and 胞 (bāo) = womb, born of. So literally it means: "same womb-born" → people from the same origin. It carries a tone of shared origin and kinship.

The full interaction:

Pantalone: "No. I was merely thinking that anyone who would consider you one of their own is rather pitiable." Dottore: "There's really no need to insult yourself like that."

Pantalone is drawing a boundary between Dottore and ordinary belonging, suggesting that any attempt to place him inside normal human fellowship is naïve or doomed from the start.

And Dottore immediately flips it back onto him.

Because if Pantalone is someone who understands Dottore well enough to speak about him in that detached, almost proprietary way, then Pantalone himself is already implicated in that same "pitiful" category of people who still interpret him, assign meaning or belonging to him at all; effectively humanizing Dottore.

Their relationship is very intricate and beautifully developed for such a short amount of screentime. It's very disappointing it ended the way it did but, oh, well...we win some, we lose some, eh?
