27 - “I thought you were dead.”
Dick is probably going to kill him next. Bruce tells himself that he brought Joker back to life to spare the first Robin of ever feeling the weight of taking a life, but… he has a sickening feeling that it’s so much more than that.
Most of the bruises have moved from alarming-blue-purple to what-the-fuck-is-that-yellow-green, though Bruce never sticks around long enough to ask if they hurt as bad as they look. The churning in his stomach doesn’t allow for it.
“You just gonna keep visiting without saying a word, Brucie?”
And suddenly those plans have changed.
“That boy of yours packs a punch, you know that?”
Bruce, again, says nothing. Can even begin to wrap his head around the concept of forming words. This always manages to happen, where either media superstar Bruce Wayne is forced into speechlessness, or terror Batman is at a loss for words.
“I thought you were dead.”
“Aw, worried about me, Brucie?”
He wants to scream a hoarse yes, but to say something like that… would be to admit what he’s so afraid of acknowledging. And as often as he strikes fear into the hearts of many, he can still be the biggest coward he knows.
Something about Joker’s smile twists something in Bruce’s chest. He ignores it, like he ignores so many other signs. Red flags? They’ve become so intertwined that he can’t differentiate them anymore.
“Sit with me for a little bit, and I’ll tell ya.”
I know this was kind of vague, but I figured I’d play my hand at it. Hopefully it was still enjoyable?
