Where to find me

[So I don’t know if anyone will see this, but I figured just in case anyone’s interested I’ll post. I don’t really know if I’ll ever return to these rpblogs since both Specter Knight and the Enchantress have received new canon that directly contradicts the (head)canons I was running on. The Charming Charlatan is more up in the air since they’re an original character.

I understand many people are leaving tumblr (and I really haven’t managed to be active, even on my personal vinukred), so I thought I’d put where to find me. I’m on twitter at Vinderbox. Unfortunately, due to life events both my left and right hands and wrists are messed up, so I’ve been doing much less art and game playing. My twitter is mostly personal chatter but I post art occasionally when I can manage it. I haven’t made an alternate site for just my art yet but if I do I’ll probably mention it there and on my personal tumblr.

I don’t really know what to say. I really enjoyed my time roleplaying Shovel Knight even if I never got into some stories I had cooked up. My hand issue sometimes means typing hurts so roleplaying has been hard to get back into. I’ve had a very rough year and a half. The doctors haven’t figured out what’s wrong with me, and when/if they do I still need to undergo treatment to hopefully get back to some level of normal. I don’t know when that will be, if that will be.

Thank you everyone who followed my blogs and enjoyed any of my content! I am truly grateful. I wish I could promise more but with the state of my hands it is very hard. I wish everyone the best!]

Before the undead could reply to the well wishes, the unidentified speaker was gone. He was not sure which was more puzzling, their words or their fleetness. Perhaps it was a spirit... that certainly could account for the pleasantries and sudden appearance (and consequent disappearance). 

“Thank you.” Specter Knight spoke to the air, just loud enough to be heard over the rattle of branches and soft whispers of his cloak. Whether he deserved the words or not, it was only polite to express gratitude.

[Thank you, Gabby!! I’m glad you’re interested seeing as I didn’t really show much of him so there are still tales to tell. I personally enjoy(ed? been a while) the wild west of Shovel Knight rpblogs where a lot is open to interpretation so there are various different stories and headcanons. I think it’s really fun.

A quick aside, I am not against canon Specter Knight. I understood going in he would not be the Specter Knight I built for this blog. I do not dislike him but I am still chewing over how to interact with him on my Enchantress blog. That will be talked about over there however. To all new Specter blogs I hope you have a fun and I’m really curious about your headcanons! Primarily because I’m still trying to wrap my head around the dlc haha.]

Headcanon talk, post DLC

[Specter Knight has a canon backstory and name as of Specter of Torment. I made this blog when only Shovel of Hope existed, and it feels weird to just toss aside the backstory and headcanons I had. I can’t even adjust them to be more canon because now Specter has a pretty filled-in canon as far as Shovel Knight goes.

This blog waaaay back in its first creation had a loose plot string to tug along and reveal my Specter’s past. But when I picked up the Enchantress I had to split attention and life stuff happened. I don’t think I’ve ever properly told much about his past here. I won’t spill all the details in this post but I guess I should express the basics and why he unfortunately isn’t easily interchangeable with canon Specter Knight. To avoid confusion I’ll refer to him as Morgenstern.

Morgenstern was a knight in life, where he patrolled and protected the land he grew up in (the area around the Lich Yard). A shift in politics led to unreasonable taxes and new laws that he was not terribly fond of. He resisted and fostered the start of a revolution. Things got bloody and it was agreed upon, by parties I will not disclose, that Morgenstern had to go. The nature of his death and that of his life are up for debate due to possible censorship. This was over 300 years ago.

Skip further to our present and Morgenstern is raised by the Enchantress as Specter Knight. I thought that the Enchantress’ conquest basically started at the Tower of Fate and progressed outward, making the Lich Yard one of her most recent additions. I thought he was raised as one of the last Order members, tasked with claiming the land about the Lich Yard and raising an undead army to further press the assault. This is very different from what is now canon, that Specter Knight was basically the first member of the Order.

Further differences are mainly that he has no one to care about thanks to the sands of time and... his memories are not all consciously there yet.

That’s the gist of it I suppose. I’m still chewing over what to take from the dlc, if anything beyond maybe a few npcs and abilities. There is much more I could say about my Specter Knight but this is more about the differences in circumstance between him and canon.]

Why “should,” Vin? I am moving from Virginia to Texas in the next month which has kept me very busy and will likely keep me busy until things settle.

[I’ve been on an unexpectedly long hiatus since life things keep popping up but I feel it’s important to say this just in case.

I have not played or been exposed to Specter of Torment aside from the promotional material. Hopefully when it is out in April for non-Switch users I’ll get a chance to. After that you can expect an announcement regarding headcanons and how I’ll be playing Specter Knight as well as the Enchantress seeing as she has a larger role in this dlc than previous content.

I might stream the dlc for fun if I can. I’m very sorry for the absence, things have been increasingly dire in my living situation.]

Mole Knight’s statement would have stung if Specter Knight were not immediately busy with the large hand intending to slam him earthward. The claws snagged on the trails of his ragged coverings, but a flash of his scythe swiftly parted the cloth. He really should have tied all the ends around his frame… Pride was his fall this day.

Once free he swiftly rose backwards, away and out of range from his comrade. He had never seen Mole Knight fight, but he did know that fighting him within the Lost City was an exceptionally bad idea. There was too much the digging knight could use, not to mention the (almost) lethal hazard of lava and fire.

The lich shifted his grip upon his scythe to a two-handed stance, blade angled forward. “Think carefully before you do something we will both regret, Mole Knight!” he called down. 

No moves were made to attack the other knight but there was something to the tilt of Specter’s helm that spoke to be cautioned. Reason was quite likely lost to the other member of the Order.

As the shroud was cut off the Mole stumbled back with the red fabric still in his hand, thankfully he kept his balance. He let out an irritated snarl as he threw the cloth to the side, stirring up dust as it hit the cave floor.

The Lich might believe himself safe hovering out of reach from Mole Knight, but boy was he in for a surprise. He raises a paw into the air with intent, and the ceiling begins to tremble. A few pebbles and some trails of dust falls before a good chunk of rock and dirt comes tumbling down towards the Specter. Today he was going to learn just how much of a mistake it is to battle the fiery Knight inside the City.

Fortunately for Specter Knight he had been granted some magical boons when he was risen as a lich. One of which was a form of sightless sight, a way of seeing beyond eyes. As well as spirits and energy, the undead knight could sense matter. This was how the Lich Yard’s unnatural darkness never blinded him. This was also how, without looking, he knew of the rocks above him.

His form eddied into nothing, rocks and dirt plummeting through the space where he had just been. Materializing away from the initial tumble he pulled his scythe close to his body and dove down a few feet. Should Mole Knight attempt to rain rocks upon him again, he will need the added reaction time. His teleport going unscathed was pure luck, and luck was not something on which he liked to rely.

“Doing me harm will resolve nothing, cease this!”

The grip on his scythe tightened while his cloak whipped around him with all the ill omens of a growing storm. Yet, for a long moment, he did not make a sound.

“Fine.” The word grated from his throat. “Deal with your dead. Deal with your ghosts, your spirits. I am certain you will find their bodies by your chance diggings. Likewise I am certain they will not cease in their stirrings.”

Specter Knight pushed off the cavern floor lightly, taking to a low hover. “I was hoping to assist those here… but if you are to claim ownership over their very souls, I suppose I cannot convince you. I will simply have to ask the Enchantress about what happened within these walls. Perhaps beseech her to allow my work, should she be moved by the plight of the Lost City’s dead.”

Though his actions suggested a possible retreat, his words were not without sharpness.

The Mole was taken aback by the fellow Knight’s words. Such guts. And perhaps a big cup of foolishness too. Once shock settled an all too low growl slithered out between his teeth. His voice matching with menace.

“ You  speak  a  lot  for  a  corpse. “

If the ghost wanted ti retreat he would have to be swifter than this. The Mole stepped forth, reaching out a paw, intending to grab onto the waving fabric and yank the fucker Knight down.

Before Specter Knight could even explain that his work would have been more along the spiritual than the corporeal he was affronted with some rather… rude words. Beneath his helmet, his brows darted together in a dangerous flinch. An almost imperceptible hiss slipped through his teeth. 

“’Your turf?’” the undead knight echoed softly, his shroud giving an agitated flare. His feet remained planted on the ground, though he was very close to leaving it. “This land belongs to the Enchantress. Our superior and sovereign. She who has granted us what we own and the ability to possess it undisturbed.” With each sentence his voice rose, its edge heightening.

“It is by her decree that we are equals as members of the Order of No Quarter. Show her, and I, respect.”

“ You leave the Enchantress out of this! “ He snarled back at the undead. “ You know nothing of what she and I have agreed on. She indeed granted me this city, and I can take care of any business involving it myself. “ if it was not for his visor shading his face, the Specter would have been able to see the glint of his teeth as he spoke with his lips pulled back in a snarl. But perhaps the not so pleased tone was enough to give him a mental image of it.

“ I don’t care what “unease” you sense here, it is not your business to mess around with what dwells in here! “

“I have no doubts that you can…” He answered slow and careful The edge of ire in Mole Knight’s tone was noted. Specter Knight did not want to rouse the ornery knight any further; however… the death he sensed here. It nagged at him.

“My intent is not malignant. Such is not my feelings towards the dead. I,” the lich looked at the large scythe at his side, almost lost for a moment in the soft glow of heat glistening upon, “have been tasked as their caretaker and guide. It is only my wish to see how I might aid them with any lingering desires or regrets.” This was not the whole truth of course. But it was the part of the truth that perhaps was the most appealing.

“ Listen Specter Knight, I don’t want you touching any remains within this City. You may have a duty as some Reaper, but this is my turf and my rules. Your “help” is not needed here. “ Irritated much? You can bet. Death and the dead was a subject the Mole never enjoyed discussing, especially when it involved his own kind.

“ You either stop with your nonsense or I will personally escort you out of this volcano. “ There was little to no respect in his tone or way of talking. Sure he was angry, but that was no excuse to speak in those manners.

The knight’s hood whispered softly in a slow nod. “There is an unease here. I do not know everything about what happened but the… restlessness reminds me of other places of loss and strife. And yet…” His sentence trailed, tilting his head as though to listen better. The crimson shroud stirred as if by a gentle breeze. “How strange…” Specter Knight murmured.

“Mole Knight… take me to where the dead are most unquiet.” Was a direct approach wise? It was too late for second thoughts, what he felt in these depths gripped him. And surely the other knight would prefer to get this done as quickly as possible, right?

He squinted, not that the the other would see it, but maybe the phantom could sense the glare he was given.

“Not before you tell me what you want with them.. Do you think I will just lead you around because you asked me to? This is not some ghost sight seeing place, Specter Knight.” His tone held a clear warning, no surprise.

“Besides, we can take care of our dead on our own just fine.”
