Headcanon talk, post DLC

[Specter Knight has a canon backstory and name as of Specter of Torment. I made this blog when only Shovel of Hope existed, and it feels weird to just toss aside the backstory and headcanons I had. I can’t even adjust them to be more canon because now Specter has a pretty filled-in canon as far as Shovel Knight goes.

This blog waaaay back in its first creation had a loose plot string to tug along and reveal my Specter’s past. But when I picked up the Enchantress I had to split attention and life stuff happened. I don’t think I’ve ever properly told much about his past here. I won’t spill all the details in this post but I guess I should express the basics and why he unfortunately isn’t easily interchangeable with canon Specter Knight. To avoid confusion I’ll refer to him as Morgenstern.

Morgenstern was a knight in life, where he patrolled and protected the land he grew up in (the area around the Lich Yard). A shift in politics led to unreasonable taxes and new laws that he was not terribly fond of. He resisted and fostered the start of a revolution. Things got bloody and it was agreed upon, by parties I will not disclose, that Morgenstern had to go. The nature of his death and that of his life are up for debate due to possible censorship. This was over 300 years ago.

Skip further to our present and Morgenstern is raised by the Enchantress as Specter Knight. I thought that the Enchantress’ conquest basically started at the Tower of Fate and progressed outward, making the Lich Yard one of her most recent additions. I thought he was raised as one of the last Order members, tasked with claiming the land about the Lich Yard and raising an undead army to further press the assault. This is very different from what is now canon, that Specter Knight was basically the first member of the Order.

Further differences are mainly that he has no one to care about thanks to the sands of time and... his memories are not all consciously there yet.

That’s the gist of it I suppose. I’m still chewing over what to take from the dlc, if anything beyond maybe a few npcs and abilities. There is much more I could say about my Specter Knight but this is more about the differences in circumstance between him and canon.]

[4:39:44 PM] Vin: spec would probably like guillotine. he led a rebellion of sorts. not sure if it was successful and when/why he was murdered. but he was something good [4:50:10 PM] pact: Guillotine's was so very not successful omfg. But that's super neat tho!! I wouldn't have thought he would've been part of a rebellion!! [4:55:42 PM] Vin: i forgot a rebellion is what u would call it pfffffffft. he was a proper knight and looked after the land he protected. but things got tight and unfair and he didn't want to stand for that. so he garnered a rebellion. he was very successful in killin ppl. excellent at ambushes, traps, and using the strange forest of the lich yard region. but he was assassinated with a poisoned dagger. i still dont know if it was from an ally or an enemy. because both are just as likely. not everyone likes blood and he took it far. it may even have been a political move to have him offed. he did sorta lose sight of what he was doing.

Have some messy information I would clean up but I got tarot asks to do. Also modern AU Specter is ex military who has a parkour/biker gang with fellow vets and people with disabilities. He is in his mid/late forties, in case I never mentioned that either.]

[Specter’s real name is Morgenstern and his title was Cross/Kreuz Knight. He earned his knighthood and was very serious about it. He doesn’t remember his name or title yet. But he knows he was a knight. A true knight. ‘When it meant something.’ He’s been dead for atleast 300 years.]

[Since I’m slowly luring my Specter muse back I think I’ll try and review aspects of his character.

On the surface he is something of a terrible person. He is excellent at killing and enjoys it. Socially he enjoys making people uncomfortable, he thinks his already questionable charm is sunk even lower by being dead. This does not stop him from teasing people, but that is more in the realm of ‘Does it not discomfort you that you are being flirted with by a walking corpse?’

Which brings me to the next level. Specter actually misses life. He watches from afar the things he cannot have, perhaps never again can have. He wants to find and remember who he was in life. This leads him to still interact with the living, to try and remember, if vaguely, what it was like. King Knight happens to symbolize the bounties of life and this is one reason Specter has fixated on him. Also he is very fun to toy with.

In life he actually was a proper knight, he had a code and did good work in his realm. In undeath he still adheres to a code, even if it has changed. He takes his newly obtained duties as a guardian of the dead seriously. Perhaps he always respected the dead. He comes from a time over two centuries ago. He is still superstitious.]

[I know how Specter laughs and he has some pretty particular laughs but I... don’t know any samples I could find. His laughs tend to have a staccato quality to them with each syllable/sound disjointed.

Not a perfect match by any means but Specter’s laughs are similarly unpleasant. His least disquieting laugh is probably a little dry chuckle. Otherwise expect weird, abrupt, rattly laughs. His pitch probably does go up if he keeps laughing.]

[I was planning to reveal this more dramatically as his story progressed but... Specter Knight’s real name is Antony and his former title was Dancer Knight. He specialized in using his greaves with deadly proficiency in combat. So secret’s out on that. I just don’t know when this will come up so here, have it.]

Specter Knight’s family moved to the Valley when he was very young. He does not remember much of the place before. His parents made sure that he would become educated so that he could have the best chance in the new country. Literacy was specifically stressed.

'Tis but a flesh wound'

At some point during his life he suffered a nasty gash to his right forearm. He was unable to grasp his hand until it recovered (well, he could flex his fingers but it was largely a bad idea). This led to a frustrating time of training his left hand to be better dexterous. Thankfully one only needs one hand to read books.

It was not pleasant but he learned much from it.
