in the face of the recent news regarding trans women in the uk, i've decided to shift how i function in regards to carrd templates. at the current moment, i have about 30 USD in my earnings from carrd — i'll be continuing to stack these proceeds up as much as possible, and then donating them towards akt: a charity in aims to help lgbtq+ individuals either in houseless circumstances, or helping to remove them from harmful / hostile living environments. my current goal is to reach 150 USD, with each template ranging from 4-10 USD. (please note, i do not get 100% of the earnings from each template. i receive 70%, which means that for a 5 USD template i only receive 3.50.) each carrd template also is on a pay what you can basis tip-wise, which means that if you'd like to donate more than just the base template price, you're more than welcome to! i'll be continuing to post updates from hereon out, and hopefully within the month will be able to send over a collective donation. <3

Hi! I don’t know if this is weird to ask (if it is ignore it and sorry!) since you only make commissions but I wanted to hop on twitter rp too but the way people write there is so different, I’m not even english so I don’t really understand how to write like that but I don’t see anyone writing like I’m used to. Here’s an example:

hi anon! i don’t write on twitter anymore, but the best advice i can give you is to write how you know! i was on twitter for a small duration of time, and whilst it wasn’t my cup of tea, i had no issue with finding writing partners who were okay with me writing differently / formatting differently. the other thing i do have to say, though, is that fancy fonts are not screen reader accessible — and i know it’s very popular on twitter to use the fancy fonts. most of all, have fun, and just enjoy writing.

Hi! Your psds looks very nice but since you don’t sell them, can I ask you how you start making one? Like what are the first layers you make or which are the most important ones? It’s what I struggle with. Thank you!

hi! honestly, i think this is really up to personal preference? i start with selective color & hue / saturation layers and continually build with those + sometimes adding a color lookup, and if it’s a high contrast psd then i typically add thresholds somewhere in it, but if i’m honest i really don’t even know how to explain what makes a psd Work. that’s part of why i don’t sell them — because all my psds are ones that you have to edit continuously for each and every picture you put it on. i’m sorry i can’t be of more help, anon!

hi! can i ask you how you made that orange effect on your blog “volunteir” ?

hi anon! absolutely. i am not the best at tutorials here, but i will do my damn best. i'll throw this under a cut, since it's a little long!

so, the initial graphic was done with just layering shapes as well as images with gradients over them together, plus a few pictures of my faceclaim. here's what it looks like without my psd:

then i made a basic little gradient effect for the background, which i'll show below:

after that, i put the two images together, messed around with the masking effects on photoshop with my main image (for this in particular i just used a lighten effect) then i just added in little additional shapes and details, as well as text. here's what it looked like at that point without the psd:

then i just put my psd on top, and here's the final product!

sidenote: i'll be honest, anon — most of my editing is done through trial and error. a lot of it is done by throwing random images into photoshop, cutting them out, and then subsequently deciding that that image doesn't quite fit. design is like a game of tetris, where you're just trying to see what visually fits together like little puzzle pieces. most of the time, i don't even know what my end edit will look like before it gets there (which isn't how everyone is, but this is my personal experience). my biggest advice to you is to be patient with yourself! have fun with it! press buttons you don't know what they do and see if it makes something cool. eventually, you'll figure out what your favorite techniques are and where you want to go in your graphic.
