Introducing Tumblr Tips—supporting the creators you love, your way.

Ever wanted to leave a small tip on a post that made your day? Or a blog that always makes you laugh? Or celebrate one of your favorite creatives?

Well today, you’re in luck. Tumblr now has a tip jar.

This feature will allow you to gift a little something to support your favorite content creators. It’s a win-win: creatives can make a little money from their work, while supporters can tip posts they love in fun, playful ways. And it’s here after much popular demand.

So, how does it work?

It could not be simpler. Select the “Tip” tab on the post that you want to tip, then choose an amount. You can send a message with your gift, and see other users who have sent tips on the same post—unless you send a tip anonymously, like some sort of superhero. Once finished, take a moment to imagine creators basking in the warm glow of appreciation, or a tinkling sound as your gift lands in their jar.

Tumblr tip jar is available to all US users from today. Not in the US? No problem—it will be extended to all users soon. Tumblr will not receive any portion of these payments, though third-party payment services may charge a fee. If you have any questions, then head over to Support, who will be happy to help.

Fair warning:

If you post ANYTHING NSFW, even if it's writing, you can get your Ko-fi shut down if you link to it on your Tumblr.

They're very anti-NSFW with their policies, even work you post off-site. People have absolutely been reported for it (not always legitimately) and had their accounts frozen or banned.

(Similar deals with PayPal and I think patreon, technically--though they I think might be more lenient in that they allow some types of NSFW? PayPal is a no-go, though. You mention NSFW at all in PayPal or ko-fi and the account gets blasted. If you get reported you're fucked.)

Yep--you'll take the fall.

It's one thing to link your ko-fi or PayPal in your bio if you offer original content as well as its reasonable to assume somebody tipped you because they like your original art or writing or shitposts or whatever.

But adding a tip option to the bottom of all your posts is a risk if you post fannish stuff. I think it only works on original posts--as in, if you reblog fanart but only make posts with your own content it might be fine as it won't offer a tip option on reblogs, but who knows?

Also Stripe is another of those "no NSFW, including writing, allowed" payment processors so if you tip somebody for making 18+ content DO NOT SAY SO IN A MESSAGE YOU SEND WITH THE TIP because that is a great way to get their account fucked over.

Basically if you post porn (including drawings or stories) or if you post fanwork do NOT enable tips because you'll be in blatant violation of the payment processor terms, but also with the fan stuff put yourself in a more murky legal area. (It may still be fair use, but like I said it gets more complex when money enters the picture and unless you're capable of legally defending yourself--if your case is defensible from a legal standpoint--it's not a risk to be lightly taken)

Both tumblr and Ko-fi will leave you to fend for yourself if you get DMCAed, both also use stripe as a payement processor, so safety is the same (the one good thing tumblr did recently).

If you want to see a better option, patreon is the best option, as they will fight for you and are just as secure.

Please stop praising Ko-fi over this they are not worth it.

Patreon has secure payments, legal pornographic content, and dmca protection. If you want to bash tumblr tips, do it with patreon, not Ko-fi

maybe jungkook is the type of guy that while playing games, control in hand and eyes laser-focused on screen, he pats the couch cushion when you shuffle into the room to see if his team was winning. he mumbles an incoherent come here, love until a yelp sounds out as he gets annihilated on screen. with a sulky pout on his face after you laugh, his body leans back to rest against yours as you sit behind him, muscles thrumming with determination. maybe jungkook is the type of guy that falls asleep pretty much anywhere in any position when he's tired enough. from nodding off at the dinner table to knocking out on the living room carpet, you would wake him up only enough so that he can follow you groggily back to bed. he curls into you, defences down and even breaths, as you brush your fingers through his hair. when you pause to press a kiss to his forehead and murmur goodnight, he sighs almost longingly and relaxes deeper into you.
