Greatest European Films Of All Time! Honestly, I prefer European films to American ones. Every new American film, or series feels the same. And it's not a good same. There's nothing but A listers, pointless sex scenes, same plots, explosions, wokeness, and drama that isn't dramatic. I'll take a ZDF film any day of the week! But without further ado, here's my list:
Starring some truly fantastic actors, Max Riemelt, Tom Schilling, and Justus von Dohnányi, this is just a really, really good film, and if you like war films, drama, and boxing, you owe it to yourself to give it a watch. It focuses on the story and friendship of working-class boxer, Friedrich Weimer, and the sensitive, Albrecht Stein, the son of a high-ranking Nazi official, as they navigate their lives in the elite Nazi boarding school, Napola.🎖
This family drama deals with controversial personal decisions, dark secrets, questionable life choices, and World War Three all in a kitchen and a living room. 🎖
Starring the always funny, and always welcome Matthias Schweighöfer, this awkward, cute, hilarious little rom-com deals with heartbreak, fear, and one man's journey into finding himself, and what it truly means to be a man, all wrapped up in friendship, and intentional cringe humour 🎖
A classic! It's not just A movie, it's THE movie! The crowning achievement of, and highest point in Jürgen Prochnow's career. Thank you, Jürgen! 🎖
Tom Wlaschiha and Ken Duken star in this high-stakes, dark thriller, and they both give it their all! It's essentially a road trip from Hell, with psychological manipulation, action, and suspense, woven together by the darkly charismatic Andreas, and capable, albeit reserved Green Beret, Frank. 🎖
One of the greatest psychological thrillers/dramas Germany has ever produced, this intense film, based on The Stanford Prison Experiment, explores themes such as psychological torture, control, division, and power imbalance. Justus von Dohnányi and Moritz Bleibtreu play off of each other fantastically, and it's absolutely one of Justus' best films! 🎖
With some of the most recognizable German actors, Til Schweiger, Justus von Dohnányi, Florian David Fitz, Wotan Wilke Möhring, among other famous faces, this simple slice of life film centers around the lives and love of various different men, all interconnected through a gym, and crisscrossed friendships. It's one of my absolute favourite films! 🎖
Following up its predecessor, this film is just as good, if not better, than the first movie, and one of the greatest sequels of all time! Picking up right where the first film left off, this sequel finishes the story that the first film started about these vastly different individuals, as they navigate the next chapter of their lives. This movie has a slightly more upbeat feel than the first, with a little more comedy, and a PERFECT ending! 🎖
Now, this one is REALLY in the gutter! This fun little misadventure tells the absurd, raunchy story about three high school graduates and best friends, Ben, Felix, and Nick who go on Holiday to Ibiza. Once there, they expect to have a Summer of "Sun, sea, and sex", but instead they end up under the thumb of a sadistic boss, Anna, who works them like slaves. The boys end up in crude, ridiculous situations as Ben tries to win his former lover, Carola, who is now with the cocky musician, DJ Kool, back over, Felix, the wannabe womanizer, gets into extreme sexual escapades, and Nick gets caught in the middle of it all, and suffers embarrassing incidents through the film 🎖
This film is labeled as a comedy, but honestly, it's more of a twisted, dramatic, Greek tragedy, than anything. Although it does have funny moments. The story follows the lives of three brothers, Agnes, a trans woman, who may, or may not be a victim of a sex crime, Hans-Jörg, a sex addict who has bad luck with women, and Werner, a politician whose family has rejected him, leaving him with anger issues. Honestly, it's so easy to feel horrible for pretty much every character in this movie. 🎖
This French film is a cyberpunk, dystopian, sci-fi feature adapted from Bosnian-Herzegovina-French comic book artist, Enki Bilal's, The Nikopol Trilogy. Starring Thomas Kretschmann as the film's male lead, Nikopol, a military deserter with one leg, finds himself in a rather undesirable situation, when the Egyptian god, Horus, wants to use his body to reproduce with a rare, female alien woman, who can't recall her own life. This film has some of the worst CGI I've ever seen, but it's just such a captivating movie, and I had to share it! It's my favourite Thomas Kretschmann film! 🎖
Based on a true story, A War Within, also called, In Love & War, is a World War One epic romantic drama, centered around the lives of several individuals. Esben, a soldier who deserted the front lines of World War One, to go back to his wife, Kirstine, and son, Karl, only to find things have drastically changed back home. To Esben's horror, German officer, Gerhard, played by Tom Wlaschiha, has integrated himself into Kirstine's and Karl's lives, trying to win over Kirstine's love, and acting as a stand-in father for Karl. It's a redemption film, exploring themes of what one must do in times of war, for not only their own survival, but for the survival of those they love, even if it costs them everything. It's a bit long, and drawn out, but the ending is absolutely worth it, and it's a real tear-jerker. This is Denmark's crowning glory of film-making 🎖
This 1993 Thomas Kretschmann flick is a VERY hard watch. It's brutal, savage, dramatic, and deeply tragic. The film masterfully portrays the futility of war, and it doesn't shy away from the hopelessness and absolute collapse that the film's protagonists are trapped in. It focuses on a small platoon of German soldiers, and their desperate struggle through the tundra of Russia, and the barbaric, inhuman Battle of Stalingrad. It's a great film! 🎖
Pivoting to something fun and hilarious, Verliebte Jungs, AKA Boys In Love, AKA Rent-A-Baby, is a hysterical, dude-centric flick about Oliver and Michael, two college boys working at a Biergarten in Munich, and trying to score with as many chicks as possible, for a high-price reward. As one might expect, this leads to many mishaps, high jinks, disappointment, and hilarity. It's very raunchy, but never forgets to have a few actually romantic scenes. And... come on, it has Tom Wlaschiha, of course it has an insane rizz roster! 🎖
Based on the best selling novel of the same name by Susanne Fröhlich, Frisch Gepresst is a cute romantic comedy starring Diana Amft, as Andrea, a child free woman who runs her struggling lingerie shop. One night, she goes out with the wealthy, macho Gregor, but then gets blackout drunk, and wakes up naked in his bed. Trying to get her life in order, she meets Chris, played by Tom Wlaschiha, who is the polar opposite of Gregor, and essentially, the perfect boyfriend. Everything is going fine, until Andrea finds herself pregnant, and unsure of who the father is... Chaos, cuteness, romance, and struggles ensue. Fantastic film, and honestly gives me Männerherzen vibes! 🎖
This film is an absolute masterstroke of genius, eccentric, cinematic wonder! This Finnish picture follows the story of Thomas, a man with dementia, and a broken relationship with his daughter, Gem. It's a highbrow film, that can only serve the viewer, if they pick apart each scene, and analyze the fine details, as the film itself is much more akin to a metaphor, than a standard movie. You aren't meant to watch the film, you are meant to interpret it. When you understand it, it's completely gut-wrenching, and tragic. It takes place in the ill mind of Thomas, as he struggles with his life choices, circumstances, and family. It's breath-taking, and it's all woven together through the epic music of Nightwish, who also star in this movie! 🎖
This one is a mix of action, politics, and comedy. It sounds like it'd be a dumpster fire, but it's not. It's completely awesome! With Til Schweiger and Matthias Schweighöfer taking the lead, it's a buddy-cop film about two very different military police officers forced to work together. Luke Steiner, the action-oriented, rough-around-the-edges officer can't stand Theo, the intelligent, geeky, brainiac officer, who uses his photographic memory to its full potential. Theo, on the other hand, idolizes Luke, and constantly uses his wit to gain the upper hand. Tension and hilarity arise, when the two of them must work together to rescue the kidnapped daughter of an ambassador. 🎖
Another Matthias Schweighöfer and Til Schweiger flick, this World War One movie is about the life, and end of the legendary Red Baron. Matthias Schweighöfer is perfect for this role, and we, the audience, get to see him conquer his aviophobia, and take to the skies to portray one of history's greatest pilots! It's pretty great, but I love war films, so I'm biased.
... What do you want me to say? Bruno Ganz, Thomas Kretschmann, Götz Otto, Justus von Dohnányi, Rolf Kanies, Christian Redl, Alexandra Maria Lara, Ulrich Matthes, Devid Striesow, Heino Ferch, Corinna Harfouch, Christian Berkel, Michael Mendl, André Hennicke, Juliane Köhler, Ulrich Noethen, Mathias Gnädinger, among others is one of the greatest films of all time! Bruno Ganz will never be topped in his portrayal of Adolf Hitler. He was born for that role. This film is controversial for its humanization of the Germans, and that's exactly what makes it great! This film pushed boundaries, tested limits, and made its mark. It makes every other Battle Of Berlin film pale in comparison. Other actors portrayed Hitler in a cartoonish villain way, whereas Bruno Ganz made something epic, unforgettable, and meme-worthy! He spent months on his part, and it shows. This film is fantastic, and everyone should watch it at least once, just for how great it is!
