🌕추석(Chuseok)🌕

Hi~ This is Admin Ju. Today I’m going to introduce you about 추석

추석, which Koreans love, has delicious food and various games. It is too bad to enjoy it alone, so I’m going to introduce it you. First I will briefly explain about 추석(Chuseok) and introduce 송편(Songpyeon), the epitome of 추석(Chuseok), and other foods .And then I will explain about the Chuseok’s play at the end.

추석 is one of the holidays of Korea. 추석 is on August 15 of the lunar calendar. It is said that Chuseok originated from the Silla Gabae. Also Chuseok is the day when we prepare food and perform ancestral rites. If you interpret 추석 literally, it means that the moonlight of autumn is the best night. So 추석 means a holiday when the moon is particularly bright. 

Next, The holiday food of 추석 is 송편 (Songpyeon). it is cooked when people hold memorial service for their ancestors and prepare some food for service. They cook for their ancestors and hold ceremony, and then people share foods with their families, relatives, and neighbors. The date of eating 송편 is little bit different for each region. Then, How to make 송편? First, knead rice flour and make a round shape with cinnamon powder, sesame, chestnut, jujube, etc. according to one’s taste. And then steam them well for 15minutes. There are other foods that you can eat with 송편 on 추석. They are 토란국, 화양적, and 누름적. 토란국( Toran soup ) is a food that is boiled by mixing kelp and beef. 화양적( Hwayangieok ) is a food that is seasoned with mushrooms, bellflower roots and beef, then roasted and put on skewers.  Also the method of making 누름적 is  similar to making 화양적, but 누름적 is baked with eggs and flour. These foods are served on the table with 송편.

The last thing I want to introduce is some plays when we are on 추석, they are 강강술래(Ganggangsulae) , 줄다리기 (Tug-of-war) , 기마싸움, etc. Although there are many games, I will just introduce about 강강술래(Ganggangsulae). 강강술래 is a game that is likened to the moon that symbolizes abundance. The way to play is to play with several people holding hands and singing “강강술래~ 강강술래”( Ganggangsulae~ Ganggangsulae) while drawing a circle under the full moon.

안녕하세요 여러분! Yes, I am very aware that 추석 is over but I was busy when it happened so we’re going to talk about it anyway! There is a lot to discuss when it comes to 추석, so consider this part one.

History

The origins of 추석 are a little fuzzy. According to popular belief, 추석 could have originated around the time of 신라‘s third king and originated as a basket weaving competition called 가배. However, many scholars believe it actually originated from a shamanistic celebration of the harvest moon.

추석

Much like Thanksgiving here in the states, during 추석 Koreans usually travel to their hometown to celebrate the holiday with their families. The point of 추석 is the celebration of bountiful harvests. The days usually consists of worshiping their ancestors, visiting their tombs to clean and offer them food, drinks, and crops, spending time with family, and eating.

벌초

벌초 is the act of cleaning one’s ancestor’s tombs of things such as weeds and debris. It is a way to pay respect to the ancestors and is taken very seriously by many Koreans.

“Those who 벌초 late are not rightful descendants.”

제사

제사 is the term used for any memorial ritual for the dead. Of the possible memorial rituals performed, there is 차례, 기제사, 시제, and 묘제. Of these, 차례 is the one usually performed during 추석. I won’t go into the details here because I plan to make a lesson specifically for these rituals!

Food

Many different kinds of foods and drinks are enjoyed during 추석. Here are a few notable ones:

송편 = Traditional Korean rice cake with stuffing such as seeds, black beans, mung beans, cinnamon, pine nut, walnut, chestnut, jujube, and honey.

한과 = A traditional Korean cookie. Common ingredients include grain flour, fruits, roots, honey, and spices such as cinnamon and ginger.

백세주 = A rice-based fermented alcoholic beverage flavored with a variety of herbs.

Tips for Doing Online Classes

I know a lot of us have had our schools switched to an online format so here are some tips to succeed in online classes! I’ve taken a few courses online before all of this but I’m still figuring things out, so if you have any more tips please comment them so I can add them to the list!

Use a system to keep track of due dates and other important info

I would keep using your planner or bullet journal if you already use one, and if you don’t already have a system now is the perfect time to set something up! There are a lot of tutorials and ideas out there on how to turn a simple notebook into a useful productivity system that could save your grades

Check your email (and any sites where class info would be updated) regularly

If you need have a hard time remembering to check, you could try setting reminders on your phone. I recommend checking email 2x per day (more often on important days where there might be more updates, like around finals and such) since then you’ll get all the info you need without constantly worrying about it

Don’t be afraid to reach out and email your professor for help. Just because you’re not physically in the same room as them doesn’t mean they aren’t there for you!

Work at a specific “school” space if possible

For example, working at a desk or table instead of in bed can be really helpful in being productive and feeling more normal

If you’re the kind of person —like me— who thrives with a bit more structure, create a daily routine for yourself

This could be as detailed or vague as you want it to be, but just having a general plan can be really useful in keeping yourself on track and getting everything done each day. I’ll make some more posts about this soon if you need help with this! 

Figure out if you work best with taking notes online or on paper, and keep doing that even for the online classes

If you know you like taking notes in a physical notebook, then keep doing that! It can feel like you should just take notes online since the classes are online, but you really don’t have to! Stick with whatever systems work best for you. This also goes for other things like physical books vs. ebooks, Quizlet flashcard sets vs. paper flashcards, etc.

Work on school-related tasks for a minimum amount of time per day

I like setting 3 hours as the daily minimum for me to work on schoolwork, since it’s not an intimidating amount of time for me but also doesn’t feel overwhelming. Plus you can always keep working if needed! This can also vary depending on how old you are, since people who are in middle school or high school might need less time to work on schoolwork than college students, it all just depends on you and your workload

While working on schoolwork (especially while watching video lectures) put your phone away and stay off social media on your computer

There are a bunch of apps and browser extensions to help you block certain sites while on your computer (I use the Chrome extension StayFocusd or the app SelfControl) and I definitely recommend using an app like Forest for your phone if you have a hard time staying off of it

Try to do submit of your assignments and exams at least an hour ahead of time (ideally more, give yourself as much time as possible!) in case you have tech issues

If you’re having a hard time understanding a concept, try to find other resources to help you (online tutor, Khan Academy, YouTube, etc.)

Make time to take care of your mental health (meditate, journal, etc.) as well as your physical health (yoga, dancing, go for walks, etc.)

Ensure that both of these important aspects of health are addressed every day, even if it’s something small

[App Review]—Beelinguapp

Is this more of an app review or a book review? Today I bring you a review of Beelinguapp, an audiobooks app for language learners.

Sometimes studying can be a boring drag and you just want to do something a little less tedious than drilling grammar or a ton of vocab flashcards. Maybe you want to get into reading books in your language of choice, but you’re worried that it might be too hard to just pick up a book written in your chosen language and read it without guidance. In that case, I could recommend this app to you!

As I already said, this is an audiobook app. There are free stories and paid ones both available to choose from. There are stories of all different types and difficulties, including classics and even sciency stuff, as you can see in the above image! The cool thing is that when you choose a story, you can also choose which languages to download it in! So far, I’ve downloaded all of my stories in English, Korean, Mandarin, and Japanese. When you go to listen to a story, you can choose what you want your learning language to be and what your reference language is. When you listen to the book, it will be read and displayed to you in the learning language, and you can do split screen so the learning language is on top and the reference language is on bottom. You can mix and match languages, so you could even have two learning languages up at once!

There are a lot of things you can play with as you read. As I already mentioned, there’s the split screen option, and there is a night mode, text magnifier, voice speed control, and text highlight that follows the reader. The text highlight sometimes isn’t timed correctly, however, and of course if the languages you have set as your learning and reference have different word order or other major grammatical differences, you won’t be able to really use the highlight to, for example, match words you don’t know. Still, the highlight does make it easier to follow where the speaker is in the text with your eyes even if the timing is a little off.

As for the actual audio quality, I’ve found it to be passable in all the stories and different languages I’ve tested so far, though some aren’t the absolute best quality. That isn’t to say the audio is bad, just that you can expect to hear some noise in some recordings. I’m assuming that the audio quality will be better with stories that you have to pay to download, but I’m too cheap so I haven’t tried any of those yet :B Anyway, in all of the stories I’ve listened to so far, the narrators speak at reasonable storytelling speeds, and if you aren’t super picky about audio quality, there should be no big problem.

The major downfall of this app is, in my opinion, the lack of a dictionary function. You can long-press words to add them to your own dictionary in the app… but then you have to add a meaning for the word yourself, which is obviously not too helpful at all if you don’t already know what the word means! Sure, maybe you could take a look at the reference language text to see what the word means, but these stories aren’t translated word-for-word and sometimes matching up words between different versions of the same text could be hard. What I think this app really needs is an easy-access dictionary that, if you long-press a word, it pulls up a dictionary entry for that word. Of course, since there are so many stories in so many languages on this app, providing dictionaries for all of them might be hard…

Verdict:

Ultimately, I think this is a pretty good app with a few flaws that, if fixed, would make this a really excellent language-learning tool!

PROS:

Multiple languages available

Can read along as you listen to the story

Can choose your display languages so you can even study more than one new language at once

Lots of little options to play with to optimize your experience

CONS:

No integrated dictionary :<

Audio quality is decent but a little lacking

Text highlighting sometimes isn’t synced properly

Korean Emphasis 아주 vs 너무 and others

it feels like these two words are interchangable but then I wondered if they’re similar to “many and “much”, with similar meanings but used in different contexts. so I had to look it up and it seems theres is a bit of nuance to them! 

매우: very 아주: very, completely, a lot, a step above 매우 너무: too, or excessively 완전: completely 정말: really, truly  진짜: really, genuine, more informal than 정말 (but not by much) 되게: (not to be confused with 되게하다 which comes from 되다) strongly, so much, very much

너무 is typically used is negative situations (too expensive, too spicy, etc) and 아주 is used with positive situations. Now people have started to use 너무 positively or sarcastically like how you would say “shes too pretty” its framed negative but its a compliment and positive, this is more casual and close to slang so its used like this in informal contexts

the difference between 정말 and 진짜 isnt much theyre pretty synonymously used it seems but 정말 means more being truthful (정 for truth/right 말 for speech) and 진짜 is means like genuine (진 from 眞 for genuine 짜 for a thing) so I guess you can think of it along the lines of ‘for real?’

How to Say “Don’t”  in Korean

-지 마세요 means “don’t ___”

Conjugation:

Most formal: Add -지 마십시오 to the verb stem.

Formal: Add -지 마세요 to the verb stem.

Casual: Add -지 마 to the verb stem.

To get the verb stem simply remove 다 from the verb. For example, for 울다 the verb stem is 울. 

Examples:

가지 마(세요) - Don’t go

걱정하지 마(세요) - Don’t worry

술을 마시지 마(세요) - Don’t drink alcohol

Today I’m focusing on Chinese vocabulary, I’m rewriting the entire vocabulary lists of the 汉语水平考试, translated as the Chinese Proficiency Test (it is China’s only standardized test of Standard Chinese language proficiency for non-native speakers such as foreign students and overseas Chinese) Level 1 being the easiest and level 6 the hardest. I personally have the HSK 4 and I’m studying for level 5! Re-writing all of the lists allows me to revise the Chinese vocabulary I might have forgotten how to write and simply boost my self confidence, because studying all the Chinese characters and remember how to write and pronounce them is a challenge! Have a nice productive Sunday guys!
