Got an idea about who I am now, chumps?
This graphic is beautiful and also pisses me off, because it reminds me of how amazing Korra is and how there’s still barely any appreciation for her.
For one, it’s creepy as fuck how so many people wanted to see her knocked down a peg. I remember after episode 4 aired and Amon kicked her ass, people should be feeling for this character in the final scene, and feel awful that someone so strong and confident was feeling so down on herself.
But nope. People were happy that she had been put down because she was too headstrong, too reckless, which is all true but instilling terrible fear in people does nothing to teach them humility, and like I can’t take someone seriously if they think that Amon making Korra feel threatened and uncomfortable was even a little bit necessary for her to grow up.
Goes to show how much it bothers people that Korra is a female character who did what she wanted and yeah, is cocky and that the show puts her overpowering confidence and willingness to fight in a good light a lot of the time.
I love that Korra is so great from a feminist perspective, and I love that she’s just such a fun character in general. Brash, fun, arrogant, goofy, hotheaded, and dominating. She is actually so great, but so many people are stuck on reducing her to a prize for whoever their favorite character is.
When makorra fans are sexist, it’s usually towards Asami, but before everyone hated us and we had to be on our best behavior at all times, it was a popular idea that Korra would need to learn ‘discipline’ and shit from Mako. Not ‘restraint’. Discipline. And that’s stupid, because why the hell would anyone enjoy a cautious, reserved Korra who isn’t in charge? aka the exact opposite of everything Korra is and likes about herself in the show?
that has died down A LOT but then you’ve got borra fans, talking about how Bolin dating Korra even if Mako doesn’t want him to would be a good way to assert himself, as if she’s a building block for his development, and as if the fact that she’s not interested in him isn’t even a factor in this situation.
you see korrasami fans treating her like she’s some sort of prize for Asami to flaunt. Like ‘oh Mako, so I’m not good enough for you? that’s cool, I’m stealing your girl.’ this is awful for so many reasons I don’t even need to get into.
and like I’ve seen linorra stuff where Korra is basically a manic pixie dream girl, or she’s a whimpering moe that happily submits to big strong Lin, and it’s irritating because yeah, Lin is a tough person, but what makes anyone think that Korra in the show is at all happy about having to give up power? Her lowest point was when she thought she was no longer the avatar, and felt helpless.
and ofc tahnorra stuff where people act like Tahno is a respectable boyfriend just by treating her with common decency and acknowledging she’s the avatar. Do we even need to lower our standards for Korra’s relationships any further, because this is rock bottom.
I don’t have anything against the above pairings as anyone who has talked to me about any of them or read parts of my blog would know, and not every single person in their fandoms is like that, but so many portray Korra in like the worst way imaginable.
I never expected Korra to fall into the trap of being that female lead who no one cares about, or flat out dislikes, or uses as a prop to make their favorite character look better, but she did and it is annoying as fuck.
