I saw your post on Twitter. The problem wasn't necessarily that you depicted Helen with pale skin, blue eyes, and blonde hair, so many people have done it before. It was that COMBINED with the patterns on her skirt looking like a Swatzika something you left out of your tweet... if it didn't have that symbol, then nobody would've batted an eye
Yeah, sorry. I did say this in my replies to that post which I might as well post on here to reiterate that it was a big oversight on my part to not think of the implications
Penelope sketch
Ive recently had someone in my ask blog tell me that this was a Nazi Dog whistle with the Swatzikas on her skirt and making her blonde with blue eyes. The artist is apparently friends with someone who has also used Swatzika's in her work whose also a friend of Margaretkart. Im not very well educated on the subject and i honestly dont know if this image is a dog whistle or not

Oh brother. Y'all can take a gander, but I'm not looking at that. I don't need to see nothing more bout Maggie or the rest of the KKKarens of that space, I've had enough 🤣 like, even without the art. if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, and is unbothered by or in support of their peer's white supremacist beliefs, we know what they are. Birds of a feather, to use another bird metaphor.
I will say this, in order to engage in good faith as you asked about how to spot dogwhistles. The thing about dogwhistles is that they're a potential warning, a pattern. It's something that makes you narrow your eyes, like "hmmm. people who say this ALSO tend to believe this." Some people see one and decide that it's not worth it to find out if it's a coincidence.
The symbol itself is not solely attached to Nazi Germany. They commandeered it just like they did many other things, right? So I don't necessarily think the appearance of the symbol always indicates racism is afoot. Now, if you are aware of a person's (and I'm talking in general, not whoever this artist is) beliefs, and those beliefs ALSO happen to be white supremacist in nature... THEN we have some context as to "does this person know what they're doing". It warrants the concern, mainly bc in the modern day, despite its origins, there is Zero Way anyone sees it and Not Know what is brought to mind. So it does beg the question, of all historically accurate symbols to choose, why that? What was the intent?
Same with Helen being blonde with blue eyes; not a unique take, absolutely a reflection of what is perceived to be the highest standard of beauty. On its own, concerning, but not uncommon for that bias to not be unpacked (I've discussed this before in prior lessons). I'm always asking y'all to think about why you make the design decisions you do. Something like this is why! What are you trying to tell your audience? What may you be unintentionally conveying?
Hi! I’ve taken down the drawing and I will be redesigning my Helen because I definitely see where you’re coming from. The patterns are referenced from Mycenaean frescoes and are not meant to represent swastikas. I myself am not even white 😭 but I can definitely see the concern behind the design elements that I chose for Helen, which were mainly just based on how a lot of fanart on here and on all other social media represents her. I’m really sorry it came off that way, and I am absolutely horrified that it would be associated with that. It was not meant to be a dog whistle. It was a mix of bad choices from my part which all gave of a bad impression.
If you look at my work beyond this, I draw all sorts of diverse characters from antiquity, and I don’t ever want to be associated with racist/ discriminatory ideology.
I appreciate your honesty, openness, and your willingness to reflect upon criticism! I sincerely hope that you continue to be thoughtful and intentional in your works and actions, and that you continue to act in ways that do not associate you with those sorts of ideologies. 🙏🏾
Yes, thank you! 😭 I recognize that it was important to point out because it could definitely be concerning, and I promise to be more aware of the connotations behind the things I draw in the future. I also have no idea who the friend anon is talking about is. If anyone could point to who I will immediately stop associating with whoever that is 🥲

Bro, it's not cool to be a Nazi and put Nazi Dog whistles in your art. You aren't slick, we know what you are doing
It’s not intentional, and I’m really sorry it came off that way 😭 I already made another post about this right before this one explaining the situation but I do NOT adhere to that way of thinking and I actively speak against it. The symbols people are assuming to be Nazi symbols are not that, they’re Mycenaean patterns often encountered in frescoes from the time. I will be redesigning my Helen because I do see where the concern comes from, but I want people to know that I simply designed her with the common way she is often represented in fanart
Apparently there are people saying you are a Nazi...

Oh my gosh I don’t even know what to say??? I’m sorry this is a quick overview of the situation but I’ve taken down the drawing and I will be redesigning my Helen because I definitely see where the accusations are coming from (making her pale and blonde)…. The thing with what people are assuming to be swastikas are not that. I copied what are Mycenaean patterns repeatedly seen on fabrics presented on frescoes at the time.
I genuinely PROMISE that I am horrified of it being perceived that way because I don’t adhere to that way of thinking at all. You can look at my other works to see that I enjoy to include diversity and I draw all sorts of beautiful people from Greek myth regardless of color (I myself am not white!!! 😭) this was just a mix of me making a bad decision given that I based my design on the several popular blonde Helen designs that are often seen in fanart. I had no ill intent and I promise I never want to give off that impression again.
Shit man, this trojan war is fucked. I just saw a guy raise his hands to the sky and say “grey-eyed athena, strengthen my spear” or some similar shit, and he felled 27 men at once before being whisked away by divine mist. The narrator didn’t even mention him, that’s how common shit like this is. My ass is stuck with a bow and 2 arrows. I think I just heard “would to god my rage, my fury would drive me now to hack your flesh away and eat you raw” two groups over. I gotta get the fuck outta here.
Patroclus from a few months ago i never finished 🧡🥹🤎
As it's December,, I wanted to look back on the many times I drew red.. I've been hyperfixating on him since I was in... 4th grade !? which is kinda crazy... (I'm 20 now)
my art have gone through a lot of changes.. but only recently I finally feel a little better towards my art style.. it's been a tough road
I can show more of my 2019 stuff even if its embarrassing,, but I hope this would inspire someone to keep on drawing,,,!!
