We didn’t have a word for our, as you guys call, gay/lesbian people. So we coined that word as an umbrella for all our tribes. We never said, “Well, you’re transgender. You’re bisexual. You’re lesbian.” We never knew those terms. Those are all from Western culture, you know, LGBTQ and all that. So on some level, it’s about getting rid of labels. Those terms were forced upon us.

Gay is not an interchangeable term with Two Spirit.

One does not have to be Gay to be Two Spirit.

Transsexual is not an interchangeable term with Two Spirit.

Two Spirit means one embodies both male and female whereas Transexual means “transitioning” (a sex has been chosen.)

Two Spirit is a Tribal Role.

Two Spirit is not the colonized version of “LGBTQ.”

Being a Two Spirit is hard work. It’s ceremony, knowledge, education of others, tradition.

Substantial amounts of knowledge have been lost due to colonization and the intended destruction of the knowledge keepers.

This is not to be romanticized, idealized, or fantasized.

Each tribe has a different name for what here is called “Two Spirit.”

Two Spirit is not a Gender.

Two Spirit is not a Sexual Orientation.

Two Spirit is not yours to colonize.

(i learned this in a caregiving class but it's useful in most situations i've been in, like not to be neurodivergent on main but sometimes you feel Bad and can't work out why)

Hungry? eat something*.

Angry? count to ten, take a deep breath, and walk away from it if you can.

Lonely? interact with another person that you aren't responsible for.

Tired? take five minutes to sit with your eyes closed.
