#i might be slightly uncharitable in my interpretation here #but reading his books made me realise that he too probably realised he would never amount to whatever daddy chamberlain accomplished #and we all know neville made a complete hash of it #would austen have made a good prime minister? i doubt it honestly #he was a good politician and minister with his competencies but ultimately lacked the ruthlessness of one #it was apt that his legacy was more or less established when he became foreign secretary #he didn’t seem to have much heart for what was happening domestically — at least in any concrete manner #and you could tell he obviously enjoyed diplomacy and engaging with foreign politicians than the tariff reform joseph had entrusted him with #in that vein daddy chamberlain too had set his own son up for limited success by grooming him into a politician he wanted austen to be #austen chamberlain #joseph austen chamberlain #edwardian period #edwardian era #british history #british politics
