It’s a state of crisis in Europe in terms of antisemitism, guys. And yet so few people are paying attention.

Where I live in the Northeastern United States, the primary obstacle to getting to Rosh Hashanah services are institutional. Employers expect us to work, schools expect us to be in classes. While our synagogues are surrounded by hired security and police forces, I largely feel safe to attend if it doesn’t cost me my job. This is NOT the case for Jews everywhere. In Europe, synagogue firebombings and public assaults of Jews have become increasingly commonplace. Self-identifying as Jewish has become a luxury many Jews can no longer afford in public. And what is more public than attending High Holy day services? France may be deploying the military to protect Jewish institutions, but they can’t assign each Jew an armed escort through every phase of their lives. It’s treating a symptom. The disease is anti-semitism which has not only not gone away, but has re-asserted itself in many forms including classical Nazi nationalist anti-semitism, religious anti-Judaism, and the classical Leftist “socialism of fools.” Europeans need to look to anti-semitic attitudes in their own communities. This is a problem in all phases on European society. Blaming the opposite end of the political spectrum isn’t going to make it go away. Collectively blaming the presence of Muslims isn’t going to make it go away and leads to the continuing unjust treatment of immigrants and refugees. Israel isn’t an excuse. If you are against Israel, then the best way to fight the country is by proving that Jews are safe in Europe and disproving Netanyahu’s argument that Jews need to leave.  Blame prevents self-reflection. It’s time for gentile European activists to look inward and ask themselves if they are against anti-semitism in theory or in action.

Lianne: I’d just like to take a second and mention that this is freaking awesome, because Baby & Me is an incredible series and never really got an audience in the West. Also, interestingly, since it’s devoid of any sexual content or violence, it exports really well - I know there’s an Arabic version of the anime out there, for example.

Baby & Me is about ten-year-old Takuya, who’s struggling to take care of a 2-year-old brother after the sudden death of their mother. They have a perfectly loving and dedicated father, but he works a demanding job, and as anyone with a toddler knows, toddlers take so much work OMG. Takuya is constantly stressed, has very little time to enjoy his childhood or deal with oncoming puberty, and still gets hit with grief pains (for his mother) out of nowhere. But that difficult toddler worships his older brother, and at the end of the day, all the struggles make their love particularly fierce. And it isn’t until Takuya hears his friends and neighbors talking that he realizes how fast he’s growing up, despite feeling helpless so much of the time. To him, his life is a mess of wiping up spilled juice with snot rags and sobbing in frustration when his father finally comes home from work. To the rest of the world, he’s a remarkably responsible kid in a family so close that it’s regarded with awed envy.

My baby sister was born when I was 12 years old, so I (and my siblings) half-raised her while we were going through middle and high school. Every single volume of this manga/episode of the anime made me cry my eyes out. It’s VERY realistic, from the anger and frustration of dealing with a baby, which leads to guilt for getting mad at a helpless baby, and then the special kind of relationship that develops when you’re basically growing up together. I got the anime fansubbed back in the 90s when my sister was too young to read subtitles, but she’d still watch it with me while I relayed what they were saying. She cried, too. We would literally watch this anime while holding hands and crying.

If you have any interest in fiction about families, you should absolutely read this. I know the art is kinda ugly, and the story goes to some dark places*, but it’s worth it. This is a gem.

*A later work by the same mangaka (Marimo Ragawa) - the BL story New York New York about a closeted gay cop in NYC - is a thousand times more depressing and should only be read as Tragedy Porn.

Ahhhh!! this is one of my favorite anime! Just two months ago, I was re-watching it and urged lucis7​ to check an episode about these toddlers’ adventures around wetting their bed. Such a funny episode!

It’s a very heartfelt series. The story good, the drama is real and the comedy is really funny and also, real. Also, the innocence will touch you and make you tear up for sure! A great slice of life! 

Re-watching old anime that I watched in the first 15 years of my life (not even knowing what the term anime meant), I often find out things that inspired what I’m writing today. Characters, even ones I didn’t notice, somehow made their way into my head and shaped up mine, in a way. When I rewatched this, I realized that Waseem is much like Takuya. 

I know from the comments, that a big percentage of Grey is readership like the bits of the story that are about kids and silly events. I totally recommend this series if you’re one of those readers. It’s FULL of great kids interactions and platonic relationships.

I was ever the serious kid. I’d be embarrassed when characters are put in awkward situations, and cried, sometime till the end of the day on/off, when the bitter-sweet moments came on. This series left a big impression on me!

PROMPTS:

Day 1: Village / Scratch

Village: Before Mink was set on his destructive path of revenge, he had a family and a tribe he loved and respected. What was his world like during those happy, peaceful times spent among family and friends?

Scratch: Mink is known, feared, and respected leader of Scratch. What has he done to maintain this position? How did he gain such fierce loyalty from his subordinates? What was his world like as leader of this notorious group of criminals?

Day 2: Angels / Demons

Angels: Though reserved, Mink is not a man made out of stone - there is someone or something that brings him peace when the demons in his heart become too loud. Who or what gives Mink comfort during these dark moments?

Demons: For every Angel, there are demons that it needs to chase away. What are the demons that hide inside Mink’s mind and heart during those dark and stormy moments? What memories, thoughts or actions haunt him?

Day 3: Alternate Universe / Self-Insert

Alternate Universe: What would Mink be like in a different context? If he were a cop caught up in a cat and mouse chase? A barista at a popular cafe? The sky is a the limit with thousands of different scenarios and settings so go wild!

Self-Insert: Insert yourself as Mink’s lover, BFF, or whatever you like. We know that you think about that from time to time and now is the time to show us your wildest dreams.

Day 4: Sugar / Spice

Sugar: Beyond his “cold” exterior, we know that Mink has a softer, sweeter side: the doting husband and fiercely devoted lover. How does Mink express this gentler side of his?

Spice: Just like cinnamon, Mink has a bit of a bite to him that comes in the form of a playful, flirty side meant to make significant others fluster and blush. How does Mink express this teasing side of his?

Day 5: Changed Body / Changed Mind

Changed Body: Years come and go, and with it comes change. How would this affect Mink’s appearance? Will his hair turn a deep grey or shiny silver? Will he still be the muscular beef cake he once was or will he have gotten a bit pudgy? 

Changed Mind: Alternatively, how would Mink’s personality change and grow over the years? Will he still be quiet, reserved and stoic or will be become more open and expressive? Will he joke around more, goof off and be even more playful?

Day 6: Summer / Winter

Summer: Summer has come and with it, it has brought heat, thunderstorms and longer days meant to be filled with activities and fun! So, how does Mink enjoy the heat filled summer days?

Winter: The world has gone to sleep and the days have turned cold. There is much fun and festivities to be had, so how does Mink stay warm and enjoy those frosty days?

Day 7: Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday: Today we celebrate Mink’s birth and continuing to live on! Celebrate however you want! Have fun and most of all: Happy Birthday, Mink!

i had an accident in a fit of despair whilst trying to finish a painting and i spilt red paint everywhere and when u saw all the red u panicked and thought i was dying but then u burst into the room and just saw covered in paint and super stressed and u were so relieved that u didnt mind the fact that paint is pretty permanent on carpet

ive been holed up in a room with all the windows shut for days trying to finish this goddamn oil painting and it reeks in here and i think im on the verge of collapsing from the fumes but then u drag my ass outside and force me to get cleaned and dress and take me out on a stress-relieving day to chill and honsetly what would i do without u

no one ever touches any of personal sketchbooks and you damn well know that but one day when u think im out/napping i catch you browsing through them with this huge nerdy smile whilst taking photos and i would be super peeved if it wasnt for me knowing that u brag about them to ur other friends and show them to them
