alright, yknow. i just had a little idea. for how i wouldve done the beginning of chapter 5 a little differently, pre-darkworld stuff basically. this might be long, but...
the opening with kris coming back in the window? fine n dandy. toriel a bit hung over askin' for toast, early in the day wandering around town, thats all nice. but! instead of going to castle town immediately, i'd have noelle.. after you walk around town a bit, show up and say like "hey, kris? do you uh, know... where Susie is? I know the festival hasn't even started yet, haha... but, I just wanted to... know, that she still wanted to hang out. If you could ask her, that'd be nice (wherever it is you two even hang out??)"
so, oh no! noelles feeling a little doubtful, maybe uncharacteristic of her but shes just like 'oh my god that wasnt a dream right, she DID ask me to go to the festival with her, right?? holy cheezus'
so, you go to castle town. and you find susie... NOT prepping for her date. sort of ... frazzled. says hey to kris, "thanks for checking on me last night... its weird how mumbly you were" but jokes that "climbing out your window isnt a smart idea, dumbass. how'd you even get back into bed after that?" or smth (she doesnt know.. neither do we.. kris obviously did MORE than just check on susie, or hell yknow what. maybe kris DIDNT see susie. i dont need this part)
but okay, point is: i think susie should be... well, THIS is where the plotpoint of "Oh. susie Definitely considers this place HOME. like. REALLY home for her" should be driven in. have her talk about how nice it is to have castle town to come home to after something like... last night. then kris says something about noelle, reluctantly im sure but. still says it. "Huh? Noelle... huh? oh, man, I totally forgot the festival was today... last night I was just so...
yknow.. uh, tired. Anyways, obviously I, heh, won't turn down hanging out with Noelle. Maybe we can... get another shot at that code in the guitar, right? let's go, Kris!"
so not only would that align her more with chapter 4s ending, showing that she... didnt quite brush off the prophecy super easily, but is still Trying to, yknow. shes Trying to just have fun and keep the days the same as they were before, but it got to her enough that she kinda forgot she had told noelle she'd take her to the festival. not because she doesnt like her, but just! a LOT happened after they hung out yesterday!! and poor noelle is a little. anxious, perhaps. she would like to know where and when susie is going to be ready... maybe she could also mention that shes just a bit concerned about how susies doing after what happened at her house yesterday with her mom
but also i think its important to just have susie say 'ah yknow im just. tired. right? thats... all." like shes gonna pretend it wasnt the prophecy or anything. and then...
you can properly integrate her clear character flaw of 'needs to do hero stuff but is also easily distracted by nice comfortable things like castle town and noelle' early on with her obviously wanting to hang out with noelle Mainly Because Its Noelle, but saying to KRIS "yknow its uh, good for the shelter codes! obviously thats the main reason, right?" which i think also helps show her still being a little. teensy bit shy of admitting her crush on noelle to kris. like she doesnt want to say directly to kris that its a date or anything, so shes both trying to justify having fun when all the dark shit is on her mind AND trying to downplay her love for noelle to kris. by saying 'its for shelter code, yeah'
and then yeah, they have the festival section and date as usual, french fry singing, the walk in the lake together, i honestly dont mind the festival not being too much, though i wouldve liked if there was like. one more ride, lol. doesnt matter. anyways, scenes play out as normal... then kris makes the fountain obviously to distract susie
and id imagine susies like . well, she had a satisfying date, so shes not too bummed out about that ending. but shes still like "damnit! there goes... asking about the code... man, we need to get into the shelter, but... we need to seal that fountain, first. we cant let the knight get someone ELSE... "
just. i dunno man, it doesnt need to be written THAT directly, but give me some more SIGNS that thats what shes thinking. that susie at least Knows that this dark world is kind of ... distracting them from their Main Mission of "get the shelter codes asap because undyne is still missing and the knight literally made a titan"
but obviously, best place to check for the knight... is a dark world. thats something she couldve probably also said. that they might have a good shot at stopping the knight if they can get to them. like "if they JUST made the fountain, they have to still be in there, right? you didn't see anyone go in the store after I left, did you?"
...and then id be more happy with chapter 5. just feeling like it actually continues the stakes of chapter 4, but ultimately it still ends up being a fun and whimsical adventure ... because , well. its escapism. its having fun. i found myself lowkey forgetting the whole big plot of the knight n everything, and having that ludonarrative harmony (?) between the fun gang and the player both kinda just. having a nice fun adventure genuinely take their minds off the prophecy (minus raly, prophecy-anxiety-incarnate)
well, thats a nice part of chapter 5. it just felt almost more.. accidental or incidental that i ended up being so entranced by the whimsy of the flower king dark world, rather than it being an intentional comment on escapism.. having fun and forgetting about the dark stuff. which is yknow, what toby SAID ch5 was about. "we saw dark clouds on the horizon, but lets not look there for now"
i just think the beginning of a chapter should maaybe not fully reiterate but still continue what the vibes were at the end of the previous chapter, in the case of ch4 especially. show the dark clouds on the horizon IN chapter 5 STILL existing, but then have the flower world be where we stop looking at those dark clouds, and have a fun adventure, for now.
instead of 'lets not look at the darkness we saw last night in chapter 4' applying to the earliest parts of chapter 5 even before susies date with noelle... because man, thats just kinda. weird. ch5 is such a great chapter it just.. lacks Glue. to chapter 4. it does a lot of good things, like bringing ralseis character arc forwards a lot, bringing up things that casual players might have missed and really doubling down on stuff like That Day and something happening with kris... and on kris working with the knight AGAIN... like yeah, its a good chapter. and i fucking love every single darkner there, flowery is actually like. tied with queen as my favorite Main Darkner id say. unless you're counting Raly too :p
but yeah, thats it. chapter 5 is Good Fun Filler, i loved having one more goofy adventure, its just also ...Disconnected Filler, tonally questionable filler, like 'how are we even managing to look away from the dark clouds on the horizon when chapter 4 set the stakes SO high we literally trashed the entire church and the battle theme was called From Now On'
