“This is so unfair,” Taehyung whines. You nervously wring the pamphlet between your hands, the paper crinkling loudly as you force it to twist and bend. Informing the others of Jeongguk and Seokjin’s rut had more or less gone exactly how you had imagined. In other words – not very well.

“This is my fault. I should’ve noticed it sooner,” Seokjin mumbles. The hamster hybrid rubs his eyes with a tired sigh, his complexion having paled significantly since you left with Jeongguk. You gave Seokjin a few pills the moment you got home, something prescribed by the doctor that’s supposed to ease his pre-rut symptoms like the bunadrox did for Jeongguk. You can’t really tell if the medicine is helping the hamster hybrid much yet, but hopefully it won’t take too long before it kicks in.

“Yeah, you should’ve,” Yoongi scowls, his narrowed eyes glued to the bunny hybrid pressed up against Seokjin’s side.

“But hyung, didn’t you say that Jeongguk smelled weird yesterd–” Jimin’s voice tapers off into a hiss as Yoongi’s elbow connects with his side, the youngest cat hybrid clamping his mouth shut at the look the alpha gives him.

“I couldn’t know it was his pre-rut, I don’t know his scent well enough,” Yoongi huffs, giving Seokjin a pointed look as he says, ”That’s his alpha’s job.”

Seokjin meets Yoongi’s gaze, the two hybrids staring silently at each other across the room. The hamster hybrid’s normally bright eyes look muddled and hazy, like he’s struggling hard to keep his focus locked on Yoongi.

Centuries ago the moon goddess stumbled across her human soulmate while he was sleeping. Struck by his beauty, but reluctant to reveal her identity, the goddess began to visit him in his dreams where she could hide her true form and appear before him as a mortal woman. 

In the world of dreams their love flourished and from that blessed union the packs were born…

The wolf nations celebrated this sacred romance every ten years during the Festival of the Lover’s Moon…

The day of the festival was spent eating and drinking and dancing at large parties, but when the sun went down… well—

That’s when things got really interesting. 

On the night of Lover’s Moon the young unmated wolves of the pack were permitted to commemorate this legendary love story in a decidedly scandalous manner. 

The unmated men assumed the role of the goddess’s sleeping lover—they were blindfolded (to represent slumber) and led into a large sectioned off area of the dark forest to ‘wait and dream.’

Unmated she-wolves over the age of maturity (eighteen) took herbal scent suppressors and ventured out into that very same forest in order to anonymously ‘visit’ the young men ‘in their dreams’…

The rules for what exactly that meant were pretty fast and loose which was why Min Yoongi was thanking the goddess and every other deity he could think of that Yunli was still seventeen. 

“But I will be eighteen in two days! Please can’t I just—“

“No. Absolutely not under any circumstances ever.”

“But Yoonji is going!”

“Ji-ah is nearly nineteen and has never been interested in any of the snotty little man-pups of our pack.” He snorted. “She’s probably going out just so she can shove a bunch of them in the lake.”

“I wouldn’t count on it,” Yunli mumbled irritably. 

Kim Taehyung yawned idly and snuggled into the cozy little pallet he prepared at the base of his favorite tree. The blindfold he and all the other unmated ‘lovers’  wore was made from witchcloth and could not be removed while the sun was down—so he had snuck into the forest earlier to set everything up. 

Now all he had to do was wait until—

“H-Hi Taehyung.”

Oh sh—

“Uh. Hello…Miss.”

Taehyung didn’t recognize the owner of that voice, but he knew for sure who it wasn’t. 

“I was hoping to find you tonight.”

This is not good. 

“Well I’m—I’m flattered… naturally but—”

She touched his hand and he squeaked. 

“I was thinking you and I might get to know each other a little bet—eep!”

The sharp point of a custom blade pressed directly into the unfortunate young beta girl’s pulse point. 

“Are you lost, puppy?”

A heavy cloak obscured the newcomer’s features, but there was no mistaking her meaning. 

Taehyung bit his lip to keep from snorting as the poor she-wolf scrambled away. 

“Ji-ah,” he tsked with feigned disapproval, “that wasn’t very nice.”

Min Yoonji grinned as she sheathed her wicked looking dagger and slid languidly into his arms. 

“You don’t like nice girls, Kim Taehyung.”

“I like you,” he whispered breathlessly against her lips. “Nice or not—it doesn’t matter to me…” His hands slid greedily over her soft curves—pulling her closer till he felt the beat of her heart against his own. “I’ll like anything as long as it’s you.” 

This was the stupidest idea in the history of stupid ideas. 

Jimin huffed as he struggled to find a comfortable position against the giant boulder he’d chosen as his perch.

Why did I let Taehyung talk me into this?

He could be at home—in bed—comfortably sleeping off the all-day feast he’d indulged in. 

Instead he was out in the middle of the forest sitting blindfolded on a rock in the off chance that one of the she-wolves was out looking for him. 

Not bloody likely. 

Not when prime targets like Namjoon, Hoseok, Jungkook—and countless others—were scattered throughout the woods.

Namjoon drops his hands from your waist with a petulant whine as you lean back. The wolf hybrid begrudgingly returns to his spot to give his packmate room as Hoseok settles down in front of you. Your skin is buzzing with anticipation as you let your gaze roam over Hoseok’s heart shaped mouth, your back straightening as his tongue peeks out to quickly swipe over his lips. “I’m sorry Y/n,” The remorse in the dog hybrid’s soft voice catches you off-guard, your thoughts screeching to a halt as he turns his gaze to his lap. Hoseok’s golden ears are pressed flat against his head as he says, ”I didn’t mean to upset your friends. I just couldn’t stand the thought of another dog hybrid–” He cuts himself off as he clenches his jaw, his eyes fluttering shut as he tries to get his emotions under control, ”–It doesn’t matter, I behaved out of line. I know she’s not my rival anymore and I shouldn’t have acted threatening. I’m really sorry.” It dawns on you that it’s probably why Hoseok looked so troubled earlier. He wasn’t just uncomfortable with Sana’s scent, but rather with how he had acted on his instincts.

“Hobi,” You murmur, gently taking one of the dog hybrid’s hands in your own. ”Please don’t beat yourself up over it. I know my situation is making your instincts are harder to control, and even if Jihyo didn’t know about it, she knew enough to realize that it was probably a bad idea to bring Sana over. It caught us all by surprise and it’s not your fault for reacting the way you did.” You can’t stand the thought of Hoseok feeling guilty for listening to his own instincts, and especially not when they were triggered by something he couldn’t control or foresee. ”Please?” You squeeze his hand.

”You’re not angry?” Hoseok whimpers, his eyes briefly flickering up to meet yours.

”Of course not, not over something like this,” You reassure him. The dog hybrid pauses for a beat, thinking your words over before he says, ”If you’re not mad at me .. Does that mean I can kiss you too?”

You stare up at the hotel with a frown, fingertips thrumming against the steering wheel as you take in the pristine white building. It looks new and modern, and the silver letters spelling out ‘Omelas’ are polished to perfection. It appears just as nice as it did online, which is obviously why you even chose it in the first place (that, and that it isn’t your wallet that’s paying for it) – but after driving through town, it just seems too nice in comparison to the slightly run down houses and businesses surrounding it. Maybe you’re just more nervous about the meeting and leaving the boys alone than you first thought, if you’re trying to convince yourself that a nice looking hotel is somehow a bad omen.

You grab your overnight bag with a huff, exiting your car before you can talk yourself out of it. Check-in is easy and quick, and you find yourself walking out of the open and light reception area in just a few minutes, key card in hand. You have no idea why your nerves are itching under your skin as you step out of the elevator and head towards your room, your eyes hastily scanning the corridor as you quicken your pace. Everything looks clean and in order, the deep red rug lining the floor contrasting nicely with the stark walls, but still – still, you can’t help but feel wary. You only let your shoulders drop once you step inside your room, the door locking behind you. You catch yourself doing a quick sweep of the room as you shrug off your coat, and you shake your head, annoyed that you’ve managed to make yourself so nervous. You kick off your shoes and dump your bag on the floor on the way over to the hotel bed, and you sink into the soft mattress with a groan. You’ve never been good with long car rides, and a four hour drive without someone else to take over when you need a break is just a strong reminder of just how much you dislike them. You ignore the little voice in your head that thinks you would probably love long drives if you had the boys with you, that you wouldn’t whine about it as long as you got to take them somewhere pretty. It’s the dull ache between your shoulders and the unease in your stomach that prompts you to grab a pillow and make yourself comfortable – a nap will hopefully do you good before your meeting.

Much like it does whenever you have a minute to spare, your mind wanders back to the hybrids at home, the path well trodden and easy. A faint smile graces your lips as you remember their reluctance to let you go, their hugs and touches lasting a little longer than normal. Jimin and Yoongi had caught you before you even went downstairs. The two cat hybrids had each taken a shoulder; soft rumbles sounding from their chests as they worked together to properly scent your neck. They both looked and felt surprisingly tired as they leaned against your body, their movements sleepy and languid as they rubbed their cheeks and noses over your skin. Considering the cat hybrids had headed to bed first it was a little weird that they both seemed so drowsy, but you figured they might have stayed up longer to talk. However, considering you had caught a glimpse of something purple on Jimin’s shoulder as he pulled back, his oversized shirt slipping down enough to allow you to see a bruise that looked suspiciously similar to teeth – maybe they had done more than just talk.

You lean into your palm with a small sigh.

Forcing down a few bites of the cold eggs in front of you is all you can muster, the rest being pushed mindlessly around your plate as your gaze drifts to the hybrids around the table. Your eyes land on Hoseok first, the dog hybrid looking lost in thought as he eats his breakfast. Normally he would greet you with his golden tail wagging up a storm, and a bright smile on his face, as he would rush to claim the seat next to you in the morning. Not today though. The unoccupied chair between you and Hoseok feels like an ocean, and you have to swallow down the food in your mouth with a little more strength than usual as you notice the limp tail behind his back, and the small frown on his face. Namjoon looks stiff next to him, the wolf hybrid’s jaw clenched and tense as he forcefully tears into the slices of bread on his plate.

You know it’s because of you. The guilt that seems to have taken up permanent residence in your throat threatens to rise as your eyes find Taehyung’s bandaged hand. The fox hybrid may have forgiven you, but it doesn’t mean that you have forgiven yourself. And you shouldn’t. What you accused him off was horrible and prejudiced, and you wish you could take it back, but you can’t. The fact that you don’t even know how to fix this is what had kept you up all night; your pillows damp and ruined by the time the sun had peaked over the horizon. You suppose the only thing that might fix this is time, but that’s one thing you’re not so sure you have, not when another shelter check-up is rapidly approaching.

You suck in a startled breath as your gaze moves to Taehyung’s face, surprised to find the fox hybrid already looking at you. Taehyung offers you a gentle smile, and his bushy tail does a half-hearted swish behind his back before he turns his attention back to his food. Your curl your fingers tightly around the fork in your hand, pushing away the sadness bubbling in your chest. This isn’t the time to feel sorry for yourself and what you might have lost, not when the others have been hurt so much worse.

As your gaze falls on Yoongi and Jimin, you notice that something seems to be a little .. off about them. Yoongi has a faint flush in his pale cheeks, and you catch his eyes flickering up to look at Taehyung, before he hastily moves to look at Jimin, and then down at the table like nothing happened. Yeah, there’s definitely something going on, especially with how Jimin’s lips purses into a frown as he catches his alpha looking at the fox hybrid for the second time, his tail flicking with annoyance behind his back. It’s not like Jimin didn’t notice how Yoongi subtly leaned away from him this morning, or how the older cat hybrid settled for petting his head instead of the usual kiss he gets when he wakes up. Jimin isn’t dumb. He caught the faint and unfamiliar scent lingering in Yoongi’s hair as he sat down for breakfast, and while Jimin can’t figure out how it ended up there, he sure knows enough to realize that it’s Taehyung’s scent that Yoongi is trying to hide from him. The youngest cat hybrid’s gaze narrow with suspicion as Taehyung’s soft eyes steal a glance at Yoongi when he isn’t looking, Jimin’s tail curling tightly around his waist to fend off the hiss building in his chest. No. He refuses to lose his alpha to the sly fox hybrid. Yoongi is his.
