Half Of Recent College Graduates Are Jobless Or Underemployed
The disappearance of mid-level jobs during the Great Recession, along with overall high unemployment, have made it hard for recent college graduates to find good jobs upon leaving school. More than 50 percent of college graduates under age 25 are either jobless or underemployed, according to an analysis from Drexel University and the Economic Policy Institute:
While there’s strong demand in science, education and health fields, arts and humanities flounder. Median wages for those with bachelor’s degrees are down from 2000, hit by technological changes that are eliminating midlevel jobs such as bank tellers. Most future job openings are projected to be in lower-skilled positions such as home health aides, who can provide personalized attention as the U.S. population ages.
Taking underemployment into consideration, the job prospects for bachelor’s degree holders fell last year to the lowest level in more than a decade.
Recent graduates are struggling to find mid- and high-level jobs upon graduating and are increasingly turning to jobs in restaurants and retail. As a result, median wages have dropped.
The high jobless and underemployment rate could have long-term consequences for the American economy. Total student loan debt surpassed $1 trillion this year, and the rate of delinquency on those loans is already disturbingly high. Though college graduates earn significantly more than workers with only a high school diploma, the inability of college graduates to find adequate employment could drive those delinquencies even higher. Worse yet, it could plague more workers with life-long debt, preventing them from forming new households or purchasing more consumer goods.

Please someone tell me the point in school? I mean if I go back to school I will be in a shit ton of debt. No matter what career I go into. Then I have to work three times as hard because I am a WOC. Then on top of that there is one job for every four people.
God help you if you aren’t going to nursing school. Around these parts if you aren’t becoming a nurse or an engineer, you’ve got problems.
I work for some colleges and sat here while I tried to figure out what I want to do with my life. Now that I’ve been here for years and have seen those with degrees in the same positions as me get masters and finish bachelors while I have not I have learned a few things.
Not only does a degree guarantee nothing, it also doesn’t measure intelliegence. One of my home girl’s swears an education is the key to life but contiues to misuse and mis pronounce words on a daily basis.
She killed herself here to finish her masters. Now works two jobs, one as teacher for leadership in public schools another as part of business end of target. She lives with her family and while our job paid for her to go to school she cannot live on her own.
Getting a degree in a certain field means nothing as long as you have one. There are people in the sales department right now that are teachers, psychologists, graphic designers…all smart, talented, dynamic people who cannot find work in their given fields.
Well this just gave me hope! -_-
