Utterly haunting parallels here. The lighting, the weather, the sea spray, Ed holding onto rope in the past and the present, and the desperation of them both.

Only this time, it's the crew that stand over a fallen Ed. They're backlit in the storm. They're angry and scared, just as he first was, forced into taking action to prevent their own suffering.

I know this has been discussed and pointed out by others before but it is genuinely gut wrenching to me that Ed did not go into a full suicidal spiral and try to kill the crew along with himself until he thought that Izzy was dead. Like, I think he had planned on dying that very morning but hearing that gunshot was what caused him to take matters into his own hands (and by that I mean try to force the crew’s hand into killing him).

“All love dies. I’m just hastening the process.”

I know on the surface reading, he was talking about Stede. But given that the man who had been loyal to him and loved him for however many decades was believed to be dead, it makes me wonder if that line had a double meaning…
