Im glad you're interested! Lately ive been very into those eerie cult and crime stories and that inspiration developed into a dwk au somehow..lol
The whole thing isnt fully fleshed out yet, but even in the rough idea theres quite a BIT to unpack... To get on with it, im somewhat using already canon events and turn them into a darker twist;
• Conni and Willi have known each other during their teen years through Franz, since he was a part of Willis old soccer team. Much later she gets pregnant by Jojos father who ends up leaving her though. Seeing her fall into addiction due to heartbreak and loss, Willi gets closer to her in order to provide a shoulder for her to cry on until they eventually develop feelings for each other and Conni gets a new sprout of hope trusting into a future where she can manage to raise her child with a man who fully loves her.
• Unfortunately as we know, Willi is an alcoholic and Conni struggles with substance abuse aswell, even though thats more of a collective fandom headcanon. Due to this, Jojo eventually gets taken away from her care and sent into an orphanage while his mother is devastatingly admitting herself to rehab so she can get her son back.
• Now this is where it starts to get a bit twisted. The leader of the orphanage (whose name is never really stated i think) is strictly religious, aswell as mentally deluded. While the children already thought of him as an odd man, it only worsens after Jojo gets sent there. I took the implication from the show that Jojo is one of the older children there, which makes him the perfect "role model" to present to the other children. So over a year the man takes Jojo specifically under his wing additionally to the bible classes he teaches all the others, trying to "form" him into what he thinks is perfection.
• While that starts off as tame as bible practices and softly bringing the christian beliefs onto Jojo, it worsens over time to straight up conspiracy theories of "perfecting oneself" and "descending the human body to become something divine." And while Jojo barely even believed in the start, he quickly learned to obey as otherwise hed be inflicted pain and degradation upon. This takes a mental toll on him when he isnt even allowed outside anymore, no football anymore, no socialization which the others also arent allowed to. All while the orphanage leader covers it all up to being simply, "a christian orphanage." He later manages to convince the few social workers there who are obviously also christian to believe in his delusions.
• During this time, Conni is going through it. She is doing well at the start despite being depressed that she isnt able to see her son, but as time goes on she keeps having unwanted worries which quickly turn into her spiraling. She is having hallucinations and dream-like states in where she believes Jojo to be tortured and killed, making her panic and crazed which results in plans being made to put her inside a mental hospital. Willi at this point, was still allowed to occasionally see and visit her.
• He likely has an unhealthy attachment to Conni and believes that if she thinks that to be true, she should either get the reassurance that her son isnt being abused, or take him with her and flee. Which is why he ends up breaking her out of rehab. That of course attracts the attention of local police, Frank being a professional crime detective there.
• He tracks down Willi without immediate knowledge of the police to talk to his old friends. He is also being made aware of Connis beliefs and Willis goal. Of course, he thinks that to be complete nonsense as theres no evidence of Jojo being abused in any way. After leaving Willis trailer, theres a strange feeling in his chest which is why he momentarily throws away his moral compass and breaks into the orphanages office. He finds various religious items, strange stolen books about conspiracies and a slightly bloodied stick assumably used for disciplining. Alarmed by this, he lets the couple know, ultimately worsening Connis visions and urging Willi on to save their son. Franz disagrees and wants to investigate the case first, angering Willi who then knocks him out and leaves him somewhere.
• Franz continues the investigation, undercover circling the orphanage at late evenings trying to peak at anything suspicious as he cant say anything to the police without revealing his unprofessional activities. Unfortunately, the feeling of repetitevly being watched makes the orphanage leader believe the time of sacrifice has come. At the same time Willi and Conni, who have layed low in order to avoid the police, go through with their plan to save their son. Conni goes through hell, her vision warping with images of disorted and inhumane figures which are the social workers trying to keep them from interfering with the stuff theyve got going on. Willi threatens them, demanding to know where Jojo is and shoots them in rage when they do not give answers and some attack instead. The anger is making part of his brain shut off, so its almost like he becomes a different person. He too has slight hallucinations at this point, about Franz trying to stop them and of himself talking to Conni in another room.
• The orphanage itself is huge, so sadly they are too late, the orphanage leader forcing Jojo to suffer through a painful death in order to "ascend and become a divine being", the last act of rolemodel guidance he unwillingly gives to the children. Of course since the orphanage leader has to lead the rest of the people, he cannot sacrifice himself first. Now completely driven by religious psychosis, the man knocks over candles from the sacrificing ritual and accidentally lights the whole place on fire.
I havent fully thought out details and the "main event" yet, mabye Franz arrives last minute and ends up killing the orphanage leader, or mabye Willi kills Franz whos actually coming to help him, who knows. Conni will most likely end her own life due to the pain shes been through realistically. Im very open to further questions and other ideas about it aswell! 👁
