HEY! I reaaally love your drawing! I have a problem :( a couple years ago I made a GREAT lion, its stunning and I never thought I could do something like that (in fact is the only thing that I really love at a 100%) and I really want to paint it with watercolor, but I'm afraid I could just ruin it :/ what do you think? Do I take the risk or do a copy even if it wont be the same drawing? I dont know :/ hope you can answer! Greetings from Mexico!
A friend of mine has a great method of testing ideas before leaping into the final artwork. He makes copies of the original drawing, either at a printer or by making a transfer with tracing paper, and experiments with various media right on top of them.
If you’re unsure about approaching watercolor for the first time with this piece, I’d say that making copies and practicing on them first will be your best bet :) good luck!
I'll add a couple more thoughts to this, since it's a very good question that a I've heard from younger and/or inexperienced WC artists.
First, there are some good, cheap watercolor papers that go through printers. If you have a back loading printer (not the type the bends the paper totally around) you can indeed print on WC paper and play around with styles, brushes etc without ruining an original. A couple google searches will turn this up.
Second, if you already have good, sturdy WC paper, you can use a lightbox method where you place the original down and "trace" the watercolors over it. You can then combine these two layers in photoshop or other image editing programs. This also has the benefit of being able to alter colors if you're juuuuust off by a bit or need an extra boost. Great for when practicing and you nailed it and want to use your practice WC layer as a final.
Third, if you have a digital tablet and some illustration software, there are some great digital watercolor brushes by Kyle Webster (https://twitter.com/kyletwebster) that mimick watercolor really well. While not a substiture for real watercolor, they can greatly help you out when you return to paper after a break. I had dropped real brushes for about a year and when I came back to them for a specific project, I was amazed how much from digital transferred over to real media.
As with everything, practice makes perfect and luckily there are dozens of ways to sharpen watercolor techniques without ruining amazing work you've created in the past.

Some brave soul in Philadelphia drew this brilliant political cartoon critiquing police brutality, and now he, and the paper that published his cartoon, are being harassed by the local Fraternity of Police.
