this is disgusting. as a lifelong utah resident, i know for a fact there’s next to nobody in the state who wants these data centers. we’ve been in a drought almost thirty years, and our lake is drying the fuck up.
i’m not gonna be able to live here in five years. the arsenic under the lake is going to make the whole state uninhabitable. i live literally right under the GSL. I will be forced out of my home.
and for what? so billionaires can just have more and more and more? this is fucking ridiculous and we can’t stand for this bullshit. something needs done and the government isn’t going to do it.
sounds like they aren’t thinking that through, either: i’m sure i’m preaching to the choir here but that lake has about 27% salinity as of writing (for reference: the ocean is about 3%, the dead sea is a whopping 33%) and enriched in potassium which, when dissolved in water, creates potassium hydroxide, an extremely basic/alkaline solution (pH of about 13.7, plus it’s a strong base meaning it dissolves all the way in water) that is extremely caustic, especially on steel, even though it’s also extremely conductive.
i.e., i see the logic (lmao, that’s assuming as if billionaires have logic), but i also don’t, especially when i see that the heavy metals in the lakebed are not limited to arsenic: you have lovely things like mercury, lead, cadmium, and even uranium in there, none of which are conductive—especially lead.
they’ve obviously never heard of something that happened in the soviet union back in the 50s called “kyshtym”, in fact that was the first thing that came to mind once I saw where this motherfucker was going up at. basically, the soviets built a plutonium-enrichment plant on a remote lake and contaminated the ever-loving fuck out of it—to the point it’s the most polluted place on earth, lake karachay—and also the techa river and its tributaries. and because they rushed it to get it off the ground, they cut corners, and there was a huge explosion that not only pretty much destroyed the place but sent out a plume of radioactive particles for hundreds of miles. what i’m saying is mark my words. thinking about how militant and adamant kevin o’leary and co. are about this thing, they will rush. it’ll come with a price—and i’m really sorry about that, too, i really am—but their day of reckoning will come. hydroxide will eat at the machines and the “workers” (all 10 of them; o’leary is an out-of-touch, spineless little cunt, start saying it) will choke on the clouds—we’re 60% water, it’s a solution/salt with a pH of nearly 14 dissolves all the way in water, do the math.
and on top of this, aside from the fact of heavy metals and caustic lye coming out of the lakebed, about 300 miles due north is a little living breathing thing called… yellowstone. about 300 miles due south is black rock volcano, which i’m reading is a fairly young volcano—i live in the PNW, we have the violent, explosive cones where you guys have those low, rumbling ones akin to the ones in hawaii. (there’s apparently a data center going up in the dalles, and they’re planning to take the glacial waters off of mount hood, and when i read about that, i thought “wouldn’t it be something if hood just erupted right now?”)
tl;dr they tell you guys to “grow up/go to hell”? the earth will tell them “you first.” earth will ask o’leary how tall he is, and whatever he says, the earth will be like “i didn’t know they stacked shit that high” before inflicting six feet of potash on that posh suit of his. trust me. and you know, now when I think about it: i admonish this to all the data centers here in the states. billionaires think they can play god with the elements, well, I promise you: they got another thing coming.
