The Inner-German border
Apart from the Berlin Wall, dividing the city, East Germany had 1400 km (870 miles) of fortifications along the border to West Germany.
In its latest form, the border consisted (from east to west) of a restricted zone, reaching 5 km into the East German territory, which could only be visited with a special permit. The immediate border area started at a signal fence, which triggered an alarm in the watchtowers when disturbed. Where villages protruded into the border area they were blocked off with a wall similar to the Berlin Wall. The fence was followed by a âprotective stripâ. This strip was 500 to 1000 m (1600 to 3300 ft) wide, kept free of higher vegetation and other obstacles obstructing vision, and was monitored by watchtowers, observation bunkers, frequent patrols, and, occasionally, dog runs. At strategic points, anti-vehicle barriers were set up.
Then followed a guard patrol road, followed by a floodlit control strip consisting of vegetationless ground where footsteps could immediately be seen. Usually, there was also an anti-vehicle ditch. The western face of the border fortifications was marked by another fence, sometimes a double fence enclosing a mined zone. For a certain period, automatic guns were mounted at the posts of this fence, clearly aiming towards potential refugees coming from the eastern side. Towards the actual border, there was usually an unsecured strip of East German territory left.
On the West German side, there were signs along the actual border, and the roads were blocked with a simple barrier.
