Back in high school I painted my fatherâs work boots. Today he celebrates his birthday, newly retired after 36yrs with the MTA. Growing up it was unclear to me what he did. I knew he worked crazy hours underground and due to his hearing loss from the tunnels I had to speak louder around him. âYouâre a city worker, youâre only a numberâ, he said about the retirement process, but all those overtime hours and hard work put me and my sister through college and not once did he discourage me from pursuing art.
