This is genuinely hands down the thing that truly made me go “hm maybe this is something…”

I don’t HC Tonks as trans or nb or gender-fluid in any way. First and absolutely foremost, goofy, “ugly”, and strong women who also have good character arcs (and kids and a husband!!) are so rare that I do not want to do anything that would weaken the fact that she is one shiny damn Pokémon…

But also, I am so put off by the idea of making her identify as any of the aforementioned gender identities for the fact that she is a shapeshifter (and I’m also put off when people reason that it’s because she is a more “masculine” character and has issues with her name, but that’s not what I want to discuss because, from what I’ve seen, the subject has been beaten to dead horse pulp).

I think that my issue with shapeshifters being hc as trans people actually stemmed from reading Magnus Chase, in which a character is both gender-fluid and a shapeshifter. Soooo many people were very upset about this due to the fact that it carries some odd implications, namely that gender is tied so closely to your body that having a fluid body equals having a fluid gender. Or that trans people are that much different than cis people or that they “change into a different person everyday”.

Little disclaimer here: I’m a cis girl. Whether or not that assessment above is accurate is NYAT under my jurisdiction.

The main point of this post isn’t even about that, though. It’s that one fandom’s opinions affect how we view things across the whole board, which is just interesting. Additionally, I remember people being lowkey upset about that character having a love interest after being a strong character (way less so, though), similarly to how people think Tonks was gutted for a man. I never agreed with that due to people telling me why that’s not accurate, and I’m wondering if that’s also a direct reason why I was never really convinced that Tonks had that treatment either, even if her situation is much closer to “being gutted for a man”.

On a funnier note, the “tongues battling” line is passed from people in the HP fandom to other fandoms, and is now like a stupidly common phrase.

Basically, fandom media is a melting pot type situation, and culture and spreading culture is in everything.

Hey so this is not meant to be mean in the slightest.

But I really hate the new kids cast for the HP show. The kids are very much too pretty, especially compared to the old cast, who actually looked like adorable, bright faced kids. The only one who looked more polished was Hermione, and even she still looked “petulant”, in a childish way. The Weasleys don’t look like poor kids, they look like models, and it’s an odd thing for such a whimsical little series, you know? They’re just too pristine, man.

I have a feeling that the show will be as disappointing as the PJO one.
