I wish I'd had time to interview him properly and I hope someday soon, I can. It was one of those moments where I had just a few minutes with him alone and I knew I could ask without too much commotion in the background because we were surrounded by family (our family reunion was this weekend). We are at my house, but this property is where he grew up (in a little house that no longer exists, but the ghost of it stands in my front yard). Here's a long video (per request)! Today, I woke up, did some exercises & then went for a walk with Poncho (and a Kubota ride with Forrest and Poncho). Afterwards, I did some rock tumbling. YAY! I *finally* put together a video of Poncho doing all the tricks I've taught him up until now. I am *not* a dog trainer. I just followed whatever how-to [teach your dog ____ trick] video I could find on YouTube. I don't think I could ever train dogs professionally, Poncho just happens to be super smart and trainable. 🐕🤓 If you weren't able to pause the video at the beginning, here are the "disclaimers" I posted, in order: 1/4: Poncho is wearing an e-collar. This is how he is able to be outdoors without a leash. If he gets too far away from me during a walk in the woods, he'll hear a quiet little beep that he understands the same way as audibly commanding him to 'come here'. (I feel safe being able to communicate with him in this way outside at night while photographing the stars, which is why we also use it during the day.) 2/4: It looks tight, but it's the perfect fit. Any looser, and the collar wouldn't stay in place. He has a lot of fur around his neck, so it gives the appearance of being tight, but it is not. 3/4: I'm keeping my excitement/energy pretty mellow on purpose to keep him from getting too excited, overwhelming his ability to concentrate on the tricks. 4/4: We typically do 'treat time' indoors. We are only outdoors for playtime, exercise, and going on sniff retreats (a.k.a. walks in the woods). This is a rare experience for him ('treat time' outdoors). I know some of you are stuck inside on this beautiful day, so I thought another walk in nature was in order - so that you might live vicariously through me for a moment. My mom & I made mud masks with bentonite clay, went for a walk, then I washed my face off with a water hose (that'll wak you up). After that, I took you guys for a little walk in the woods and together, we'll learn what tulip poplars are! I hope you guys are doing okay. Today, we celebrate the earth. I know we're all very sad about the current pandemic, but maybe we can join together in a small amount of gratitude for what this is doing for our home planet. Many people who haven't seen the sky for much of their life are finally seeing the stars and distant mountains they thought they'd never see. And whether or not any of us realize it, we are all healing, too. Slowing down from the buzz and chaos of modern life, we're learning more about ourselves and each other in ways we couldn't have without this. It's extremely easy to think about all the bad aspects of what's going on - it's easy to think of what we've lost, what we're lacking, etc. But even if it's just for today, let's think about all that there is to be grateful for and let's celebrate our bravery in isolation. And smile knowing that Earth is healing, even if only for a moment. Yes, I've been social distancing for 4.5 years. I arrived here in October of 2015. Obviously, I'm being a bit silly, because you'll see in this video that I go to a very crowded Halloween ball, but I genuinely cannot remember the last time I was in such a crowded place. This is a super long video. I've never made one this long before. But I really felt like catching you guys up on some things that have happened between my last vlog and now. I won't be surprised if no one watches it all the way through, but it's here, nonetheless. I'm definitely going to get better about making videos for you guys. My friend Lauren came to visit me from Chicago. I recently had my dog's DNA tested. I found out why he's such an intelligent, easy to train, protective beast! Apparently, he's 1/4 Australian Shepherd, and just under that, he's a perfect mix of Siberian Husky, Great Pyrenees, and Boxer; and just under all of that, he's German Shepherd and Border Collie. So, basically, he's a mutt of all the best dogs. Perfect for protection because he looks so friendly, but he's quick to put a stranger in their place if mommy doesn't feel good about them! He's seriously THE most amazing dog on Earth. Armed with the new knowledge that he's 1/4 Australian Shepherd (even though he looks more like his smallest chromosomes - German Shepherd & Border Collie), I decided it was time to teach him to jump through a hula hoop. lol. He seriously picked this up in under 10 minutes. He loves it!!
