Hilo For The Holidays! Enjoying the last few days of my Holiday break with the keiki in Hilo. Back on tour and in the studio this month. New year, new music.
Rows of Ni'ihau Shell Lei laying side by side. All lei shown here are Lei Kipona, meaning made with mixed types of Ni'ihau shells.
From left:
1. 20 strands of multicolored Kahelelani shells sewn into one lei.
2. 12 glorious mixed strands we call "the Birhday lei" a present for my 34th birthday from Marc and Ni'ihau Lei Master, Kele Kanahele.
3. A 5 strand lei from Mama Ane Kanahele with a sampling of the best of each type of Momi and Kahelelani shell.
4. A mixed 5 strand with alternating strips of Akala pua (flower pink) and Waipipi (hot pink).
5. 20 strands of Laiki (rice shell) with tiny pops of Kahelelani for color.
6.. (far right) 12 strands sewn in the Helekonia or heleconia flower style with 2 momi shells tied and four Kahelelani shells in between each.
(All leis shown are a part of a private collection and not for sale)
