Hard Day to Be Gay
Many moons go by without a flicker of shame or insecurity about who I am or the identity that is recognizable by my name. I stand proud and justified with the people who stood before me fighting and clawing to be understood and seen as equals. But sometimes the moon and sun stay away too long, casting a voided night on my soul. My guard fades away and my armor that I’ve had with me for a long time feels heavy.
Smells of iron oxide waft with anger to my nose and my skin pinches between chain links and buckles. A word written in blood hovers in the dark sky “Straight”. I taste the O negative omen as it lingers on the top of my tongue, trying to trick the toxicity of society down my throat like a spoonful of expired cough medicine. On those days I try not to swallow. I try to grit my teeth and let the metal spoon scrape against my incisors, clinking and clanking, the nerves send short zaps to my jaw, my toes curl and hands ball into fists, clenching and shaking. And yet some days it makes it in.
The wallow of self-pity and “normality” begin to sink in and spread like the virus it is. The fever of loathing and depression rise, 102.7 degrees Fahrenheit to be exact. Too sick to move, too hot to touch, like radioactive waste. My thoughts spread to my insides and my organs become confused as to what they are doing here if I am not me.
“What if I was normal?”
“What if I was straight?”
“Why can’t I be normal, why can’t I be straight?”
“Can you make me straight God? I know I’ve asked a thousand times. But can you do it today? Just once? Just for a minute? Even a few seconds? Can you make me how I was supposed to be made? I know the world is broken God. I know we are fallen, God. But can you fix me? Because I’ve tried everything. I’ve tried loving you the best I could, I fought battles for you, I’ve done everything you’ve asked. Can you do this thing for me? Can you change me? Please?”
“If you do this, it’ll all be okay. People will see this as a win. People will understand that I’m close to you. Because some people can’t see that I’m close to you because of this thing. Some people don’t believe I love you because of this thing. It’s just this one thing. One thing. You can blink and create universes and galaxies. The least you could do is sniff or cough my gay away. It’s so simple.”
“Do you hear me? I’ve tried thought practices and praying and abstaining and refraining and hating and crying and praying and praying and praying and trying and trying. I’ve had to look at people as they told me I wasn’t close enough to you and that I stopped trying to get rid of this thing because I was afraid. I’m not afraid. I’ll do anything. You want my hand, have it, you want my sight, take it. I just need this to go away. Please. Take it from me. Please. Please. Please.”
My voice empties into the abyss. The silence wraps around me like a freezing blanket, I clench my teeth and think to myself, “Who am I trying to love? Jesus or the Christian community? Who am I trying to love, the community or myself? Who am I trying to be? Me? Or a version they want to see?”
And then as these questions fade away, the bloodstained cloud drifts and the sun rises on my tear stricken face. My bony body rises from the grave I unknowingly dug myself into, dirt falls from my shoulders and tumbles down to the ground sending upturned earth fragrances into my nostrils. I jump, my arms hitting the ledge, my hands grasping damp cold soil, I yank and pull myself out, heaving my now naked battle torn body across the dewed lawn.
I catch my breath and stand, knees wobbling, saggy skin shaking and waving from the vapid rapid loss of dignity. I peer into my own gravesite and I see the words “You didn’t try hard enough” etched into the forsaken coffin.
But I close my eyes and take a deep gasp of air. I reply slowly, through quivering lips and thin cheeks, “Expectations aren’t always reality.” I spat, the saliva bomb burst the tomb into pieces like a bursting grenade, sending wooden shrapnel and dust overhead.
I turned and limped away, back to my life. I whispered to myself, “It was a hard day to be gay.”

I know someone did not do this. I’m dead. Deceased. Choked.
Reason for Rain
The large boom that resounded shook the entire trailer, plates clinging and clinking, pots and pans banging and buzzing. The house went dark. My childhood heart, beat and drummed in my ears. Mom opened the door and grabbed a chair. She moved it over in front of the doorway and sat down. I sat on the ledge of the entrance. A light flashed across the sky, illuminating the darkness.
“Okay, now count, one-Mississippi, two-Mississippi, three Mississippi...” After about ten we heard the crackle and sizzle of thunder. “See, that means the lightning is about ten miles away.” My mom smiled as another bolt tore open the night sky, revealing the surprised world around us.
In that split second, the clouded spotlight stopped time. Rain seemed to stay in place, the telephone and power lines stood still, the leaves that were falling, suspended in mid-air. Then we counted as soon as the stage became dark again, the abyssal play resumed. Petrichor wafted into our noses and the gentle rain-breeze tickled our legs with wet kisses.
It didn’t matter if our location predicting lightning strike was accurate, it didn’t matter if we couldn’t tell time correctly. What mattered is that we discovered a reason for the rain. Not the precipitation or humidity levels, or the tropical topical radar. Not the winds pushing or hurricanes entering the gulf. But to create a memory. We didn’t freak out or worry about the time or the loss of air-conditioning. We counted, watched, smelled, felt, and heard the rain. Became one with nature.
Those spotlight flashes lit up my mind and engraved something there. It reads:
“Peace among the storm.”

Hello Me
A wild child is what they used to call me. As a baby I was colic and unruly, toddler worse still, a kid hell on wheels. 40 lb midget length mischief, hiding under dinner tables, punching guests in the groin, staking out clothing displays and grabbing old ladies as they reached for that new top.
I was adventurous, reckless, and too smart for my own good. I had sass and flare and I told everyone what I thought, holding nothing back, even when it got my mom called to the principal’s office because I kept telling my science teacher she was wrong in front of the whole class, which she really was.
I had imaginations and dreams and aspirations of dragons being pets and magic taking me far far away from trouble when it came. But something changed. I got older and I became more obedient, a little more, I got smarter about word choices and feelings. I got rid of the negative things and worked on being a good well rounded person who still took risks and had those dragonesque wonderlands still in my head.
But I kept going. Somewhere down the line, I cracked. This once independent, free-spirited boy because a cautious, anxiety-ridden man. Those imaginations, dreams, aspirations became false hope, nightmares, and failures. The risk taking got to be so hard that I never took first steps. I second guess. When did I start to second guess? That boy who leaped first and asked questions later, knowing that if I fell, a blue dragoon would be waiting for me down below to save me.
I forgot how to trust myself. How can someone not trust themselves when they should know themselves better than anyone else? Am I just supposed to follow a whim, hoping that it is what I want? Hoping it will lead me back to the path of the well mannered teenager who still had a future?
My mind has become a weary nest of upset and disappoint. Upset at the world around me. Disappoint because I let it happen. That boy would have fought to the very end. But this man is tired. Tired of fighting. Tired of living in the past.
So this man kisses that boy wonder on the head, that wild child on the cheek, and waves then onward. This man bows at the teenager who had to grow up so fast to accommodate circumstances around him. And this man looks in the mirror and hugs himself, reaching beyond the glass into the real him that’s been waiting all along.
Even though there are better me’s, there’s only one who is living right now and if I hate being him, if I berate him for not being like the others, I’m only doing what the world has done.
So I embrace love, risk, and caution. I embrace spontaneity and planned futures. If I am who I am, I am all of me. Dualistic in nature, Gemini at heart. But still me. And what else matters than being who I truly am? Even if it doesn’t make sense.
No one has to get me.
I have to get me.
So, hello me.
I love you.
Regret
Heartbeat
Heart drops
Cascading down love waterfalls
While I stand here alone
Spotlight
Spotted
Center stage wrapped around a black cage
While I stand here alone
Thought I knew what I wanted
When I said to go and be happy
Time can’t be rewound to split second decisions
Revisions don’t exist
Forgiveness is fickle fighting for futile relationships
Sold out show no audience
Full cast one man show
Curtains can’t close with invisible stage hands
Macbeth was here
Destructive reprehensible choices made too soon under a canvas of speckled dust shining across the theatre
Heartbeat
Heart drops
Cascading down love waterfalls
While I stand here alone
Spotlight
Spotted
Center stage wrapped around a black cage
While I stand here alone
Words hit empty chairs
The damage already finished
No splitting hairs
Only one to blame is oneself
Teeth hit tongue for recompense
Swift talking caused hasty errors
Mirror breaks from self-staring
Don’t blink, the shards stabbing iris’ feels better than the empty chest carried around by the husk of a man left behind by bitter future plans
And here I am.
Alone
When all I wanted was for you to be happy
Who knew that what I wanted was what I didn’t want in the end
Because I am here
Single and exposed.

Kidney Stones and Other Rocky Roads
Hey guys. Sorry I haven’t been active as much. I just found out I have a kidney stone so a lot of stuff has been put on hold. I promise that I will be back to my regular activity after my health returns to normal.
Reblog this if you think writing is an art
I literally had to reblog this twice in a row
It takes creativity. It is the act of putting something on paper, that when others see it, a unique picture is drawn in their mind. All guided by the author. I definitely call that an art.
Wait, there are poeple who don’t think writing is a form of art??
The post was practically perfect in every way, and then somebody went and added Julie Andrews, thus shooting it into the realm of utter and absolute perfection.
Shout-out to all my brilliantly creative writer friends 💓
if you think Writing/music isn’t art, google the definition of “art”.
Just because it can’t get likes and reblogs on tumblr doesn’t mean it’s not “art.”
