saw this on twitter and like…this (the essay, not the tweet) would be a shit-for-brains take regardless but actually publishing this in an academic year when the institution at which you are a professor has had 5 suicides in 4 months is just fucking staggering. genuinely unbelievable callousness on display here. i think the university of cambridge should be burnt down also.
i’m in a mood today apparently. this is why ~dark academia~ isn’t just annoying. this is the culture that’s being romanticised - this total disregard for students’ (& staff’s) wellbeing for…what, exactly? some abstract notion of academic freedom? “intellectual rigour”? all i can think of is kenneth dover’s blasé confession that he deliberately drove a colleague to suicide so he would stop “bringing the college into disrepute” with his bipolar disorder. genuinely unfathomable to me why you’d bother going into the humanities when this is your attitude towards other human beings.
