I didn't know about the U23 (though i think i got that wrong and it's 24?)-only rule, but idk, it makes sense for the format? At least the young players get a shot... And if you make it that gimmicky with those special teams, you can probably do the rules however you please because it's not a real/offically strict thing? The football world cup is very much also world politics, as we can see at the moment, and i think the hockey world cup avoids that/tries to, at least? Or at least keep it to NA
yeah it does fit the format. at the moment that rule weirded me out a bit, but i guess when it comes around it won’t be too bad, in the end it’s not any different than putting all the smaller european nations in one team. i mean you can also look at the positive side of that rule: the best young players will get to play bigger minutes on a big stage against really good competition.
sports is always political in some ways, you can’t fully separate them, but you can try to minimalise it, and i think they do that. what i meant with the korea comment was more that russia probably put more effort (read: money) into getting the nhl players to play in sochi than korea would/will for pyongyang, because russia had a personal interest in getting it’s best players to win gold at their home games, considering how big of a sport hockey is in russia. korea doesn’t have that much of an interest.
i think in the end the decision will be made on whether the ioc is willing to give a part of the revenue it makes from the olympics to the nhl. the nhl can’t make any profit from the olympics (due to the regulations on advertising and the 3 week break in the league) and they will only participate if they can get at least some money out of it. the world cup on the other hand is their own product and makes them profit. so as usual money will rule the world :)
I don't get why they call it world cup, when it's not a World cup,it's an NHL event.I get the political side of it and I understand the Team "Europe" thing but I am not a fan of it. I wonder which anthem they will play for team europe? It won't grow the league at all, but that's not my problem. I would hate to see the NHL players not go to the olympics. The players want to go there and play for their country. It will be weird to cheer for team Europe .I can't wait to see the team europe jerseys.
FREUDE SCHÖNER GÖTTERFUNKEN TOCHTER AUS ELYYYYSIUM~ WIR BETRETEN FEUERTRUNKEN HIMMLISCHE DEIN HEILIGTUM DEINE ZAUBER BIND— oh wHAt do you mean, czech republic isn’t in team europe?! sweden?? not your anthem, switzerland? well, i guess then we have nothing again, i’m out of suggestions.
But yeah, it’s very… North American/NHL. Nothing for us or for hockey here and they don’t care, it’s all North American money and politics. :/ I just wish… Of course that it was different, but that it was either less obvious (for example having the games all over the world or whatever idk), or that they would be open about it (Canada Cup).
(For me the main thing about the Olympics is not even that Germany isn’t that great, but last time, when all these articles came out, how you have all these great athletes, training every day, super hard next to their day job if they are not super lucky to get some sponsorship, and the women’s hockey team as well. And then you have those multi millionaires fly in when their super well paid league lets them, most of them not even there for opening and closing ceremony, and their game is the highlight of the Olympics?! I wouldn't care that much if that hadn't been so true the last two winter olympics.)
The internet, as we all know, is a meritocracy. Especially in the hockey corner of the internet, who you are doesn’t matter so long as you
I was so pissed when I first read this. Then I read it a second time. It’s sheer genius
