one fun part of weaving for me is trying to recreate things that are way out of my price range, which always paradoxically leaves me wondering how anyone can afford to produce fabric by hand and not charge exorbitant prices.

for example, this thom browne:

I did my best to recreate the fabric with what I have, and it took me several days of intense weaving.

also this hermes:

is mine now:

but at what cost??? (a LOT of time and my brain going into a sinkhole trying to keep track of all the counting and colors, and I now have even greater respect for penelope because unweaving is a slog of a process.)

if I were to cost out the materials and the time of my labor, the sticker prices would seem quite low to me, actually. I'm sure professional weavers/artisans/etc can work much faster and more efficiently than I can, and I have no idea if thom browne or hermes fabrics are handmade by people paid a fair wage. but this exercise always makes me appreciate how central and costly fabric production must have been in the ancient world, and up to not very long ago, and I find myself complaining much less about the cost of well-constructed handmade clothing.
