Hi! I have one question that confusing me a bit. As I understand wuxia tells about swordsmen in mortal xianxia tells about immortals, magic, gods and demons. But for example Chinese Paladin 3 and Ancient Sword where is full of magical staff, demon-creatures, gods, spirits etc so it's mean they are xianxia not wuxia? How do you understand whether series is wuxia or xianxa?

It is very confusing at times, but let me try and explain what I got. Wuxia is all about “Martial Heroes” it’s all about fighting, martial arts and heroes that save the world and become sort of famous etc. But key is that most Wuxia tv shows are based on novels, like the Legend of the Condor Heroes is based on the novel by Jin Yong. Most Jin Yong novels are considered Wuxia. And once you have seen/read a lot of his work, you will get a feel for the classic wuxia. Xianxia is also a type of novel that sort of developed from the Wuxia genre. For example Hua Qian Gu is based on a Xianxia novel, and that’s why they are calling the tv series Xianxia. But like you said already, Xianxia has a lot more fantasy and the difference is overwhelming really. Chinese Paladin and Ancient Sword are based on RPG games, that makes it difficult because games are a weird genre. But if you look at the type of story-line of CP1, it has definitely some Xianxia elements, with people learning magic spells, flying on sword, immortals etc. But personally I also see some Wuxia elements, (not everyone might agree but ok) the character development and with heroes that want to save the world. But ok, If you really must give it a name, calling it Xianxia might work more than calling it Wuxia. Although Fantasy Wuxia works for me too.

xianxia(仙侠) literally means immortal hero so the basis is that there are immortals/people who use magic in the series. There is more of a focus on 修仙（cultivation to become an immortal）in xianxia series.

Wuxia（武侠）there is more of a focus on the martial arts aspect. Despite what cpgs show, there is no magic in wuxia series.

You could argue that xianxia is a hybrid of wuxia but I think there is still a very clear difference between the two which is why it pisses when people say that Chinese Paladin is wuxia because it really isn’t. 

The rule of thumb is that if there is magic, it isn’t wuxia.
