male character: has both flaws and interesting traits
some people: I really like this character! yes he has certain flaws but I also love how he is ___, did ____, and when this happened, instead of ___, he did ____!
female character: has both flaws and interesting traits
those same people: yes so her flaws are ___, ___, and ___, and because of that I hate her entire character. Huh, good traits? I don’t see any at all in her.
I know I’ve been ranting a lot about misogyny in fandoms, but I can’t help myself. I’m this close to deleting tiktok bc of it
Most people do not realize that misogyny is often internalized, and it shows up in such insidious, subtle forms that most people don’t notice it.
1) You can be misogynistic without overtly hating women (like Andrew tate).
2) You can like a few female characters and still be misogynistic.
3) If your top five faves in a media are male and five least faves are all female, you 100% have (internalized) misogyny. You might be tempted to say that it’s just your opinion and based on your preferences, but replace female characters with any other minority group and it starts to look really gross.
People can write entire essays explaining why [insert basic male character] is their fave, yet will never give that level of attention or time to analyzing the good qualities in a given female character. These people often don’t even give female characters a chance; they see a few things they don’t like and then automatically hate that female character while dismissing every other thing about them.
“I don’t like most of the women in [insert media] because they’re all sexualized!!” is often such straight woman misogynist rhetoric. Because chances are, the men in that media are ALSO sexualized — but those fans don’t mind because they are attracted to men. “Ewww curvy womanly bodies and boobs, so bad!!! 🤬🤮 Yayyy shirtless abs and V lines and pp physics, so hot!!😍”
Regardless, tits and hips and butts and dicks and bodies and clothing are not inherently sexual — it depends on whether or not the media brings attention to these through the character’s interactions, personalities, and dialogue. For example, in the anime Food Wars (🤮), the female characters are sexualized not only through their designs, but through their actions and gross situations, like literally being groped (not to mention they’re minors). Disliking those female characters is valid because of how the show writes them as sexual fantasies through their actions alone.
Now if the females in a media are dressed in revealing clothing but none of the other characters bring attention to that and none of that dumb “accidental groping” or “walking in on the girl changing” shit happens, it’s on YOU for making it weird.
Lastly, if you like a boring male character and then turn around and bash a female character for being boring, I will clown you. If you quote specific dialogue from a male character to explain why you like him, yet ignore all the funny/interesting dialogue from a female character, wake up. If you hate female characters for idolizing another character while ignoring the male characters that do the exact same thing, wtf. If you hate female characters that wearing tight, revealing clothing yet ignore male characters similarly dressed, open your eyes.
Imagine your favorite male character. Now take him, and give him a curvy sexy woman body wearing a revealing outfit. Her personality is exactly the same, her actions are identical. (If the original male character was close with another male character, now this female counterpart is close to that same male character.)
Now really think objectively. If your memory of this character was completely wiped, and now you are seeing this curvy woman for the first time — the mistakes she makes, her relationships with the other characters, her interests, etc — would this woman make it to your faves list?
I 100% guarantee a huge chunk of people would not like their fave male character as much if he was a curvy woman instead.
In summary, you are not exempt from misogyny just because you are a woman or you like three or so women! Please stop these insane double standards and try to critically think about how you may be treating male and female characters differently. This kind of shit makes my eyeballs melt out of their sockets so please stop this madness
