Old Soul
I will be writing little blurbs of character drabbles and whatnot in penance for all the ship-weeks I keep missing on the discord. So let’s start with the current one: HitsuMatsu.
~*Old Soul*~
“Ne, ne, Taichou! Has anyone ever told you that you are an old soul?”
Toshiro frowned, looking over at his most-likely-already-drunk-because-it’s-five-o’clock-somewhere lieutenant laying uselessly on one of his couches. About a dozen or so sake bottles were spread out on the table in front of her, and Toshiro had no guess as to which ones still had sake in them, if any at all. Her slurred words told him every inch was bone dry.
Sighing and taking off his glasses to give himself a break from the never-ending paperwork no thanks to her, he stood up. Yes, but only by one person. “No, no one has ever said that to me until you did just now. How so,” he asked, trying to get a good glimpse of her red face. Today was a rare day, in which Rangiku Matsumoto was drinking alone. No Shuuhei, no Izuru, and no Kyoraku in sight. He couldn’t blame her, though. The date was explanation enough for why she was like this at only nine in the morning.
She looked absolutely miserable with a splotchy face and tears in her eyes that haven’t quite fallen yet, though he would surmise that she had already done so when she woke up this morning. It would be crying session number two once these tears made landfall.
Rangiku let out a boisterous laugh, slapping her knee for added effect. She was trying to appear more chipper than what she was feeling. Enough years had gone by for Toshiro to decipher Rangiku’s moods. “You are an old soul. You’re like a grandpa in a young body. And you can’t convince me otherwise!” She shouted the last sentence while waving a bottle in the air, probably intending for it to seem threatening, but Toshiro silently admitted was just cute.
“I’m not old,” he childishly defended as he walked over to the end of the couch and sat on the arm. Immediately, he was assaulted by sandals as Rangiku shoved them up onto his lap. He rolled his eyes, but he didn’t push them away.
“Don’t try to pull the wool over my eyes! You are a stickler for rules, you speak like you’re a grandpa, and you’re ruthless to your entire division when it comes to paperwork!”
It was harder this time around to resist the chuckle, just barely keeping it from escaping with a bite to his lower lip. “Rules are there for a reason. I don’t talk any differently than you or the trainees do, and it’s only you who thinks I drag through paperwork. And considering the fact that it is your literal job to deal with it, or the fact that you don’t do it at all, I don’t think you have reason to complain.”
Rangiku whined. An honest to Soul King whine. “But you’re such a hard ass!”
“Hey.” He lightly slapped her foot, though she acted as if it was a mortally fatal wound. “I prefer to think of being a hard ass a good trait!”
She snorted. “You would.”
“Pervert,” he threw back.
“Shorty!”
“Drunkard!”
“Boss!”
“Fat ass!”
She immediately sat upright, Toshiro failing to hide a smirk as she desperately defended herself and adjusted her collar, jiggling her boobs. “Hey, I can’t help their busty size.”
It was the last straw, and he collapsed into the back of the couch laughing. It was only him for a few moments, before Rangiku joined with him. It was such a ridiculous go between them, there could be no response other than the outlandish laughter they were currently subjected to. It was amazing that, even on days like today, they could wallow in sadness, guilt, longing and laughter. Drunk or not, Toshiro and Rangiku were like this, it was how they were really feeling. Because....
Rangiku sobered first, wiping away tears that had finally fallen thanks to their banter. It was her second cry, because as soon as they started, they weren’t going to stop. And surely enough, when she wiped them away, fresh ones took their place. Doesn’t matter what emotion initiated them, or the emotion she was feeling right now. They weren’t going to stop for a while. And Toshiro would be there for her. He would cry with her.
They were the same.
Toshiro slid down onto the couch cushion, allowing Rangiku to fall over her and cry her eyes out. He didn’t mind. Instead of chastising her for the heavy drinking and name calling, he pulled her closer and ran a comforting hand on her head. She wailed and he remained strong and quiet, a stone of strength for her as he silently let tears slip.
Today hurt him. It really did, and he would rather be buried into a mountain of paperwork than consciously thinking about today. But Rangiku was hurting, too. It wasn’t just about him. They were both connected, they were the captain and lieutenant of this division, they heavily relied on each other and it was no doubt that they relied on each other now. More than ever.
Toshiro looked up at the calendar, the day circled in red and glaring at him from across the room. After all these years, his betrayal still hurt so bad. And had it awarded him? Death, and two people left behind that would never recover. Perhaps in a decade or two, they would cry less, but anything beyond that was hopeless.
He looked back down at the redhead, her face buried in his haori. Not his traditional division haori, but one that was decorated in daisies. A gift on his last birthday, after the fireworks. If it had been anyone else getting it dirty, they would no longer have the parts that would define their gender. Right now he didn’t care, only for Rangiku.
Only for him.
~*End*~
And that’s a wrap! Okay, so one down, and.... three more to go. Fun. In any case, I hope all of you enjoyed. Because drabble... and HitsuMatsu... so why not? XD Peace, Love and Happiness!
