When youāre depressed and needy, love doesnāt save you; it buries you. Unless you happen upon someone who understands you and loves parsing your emotional landscape (guys like that do exist!), youāre not going to get what you need[ā¦] Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to dig into the deepest darkest depths of your soul to find yourself. If youāre depressed, if youāre lonely, if youāre lost, maybe digging deep isnāt the first and only thing to try. Maybe youāre already doing too much of that[ā¦]Ā You can focus outside yourself. You can resolve to listen to the 40 best rap albums of 2014 (according to Rolling Stone, anyway), like Iām doing right now. You can paint the walls of your apartment pumpkin orange. You can train for a marathon. You can write two pages a day. You can teach yourself Italian. You can do every one of these things at once. These are not arbitrary boudoir tricks you acquire in order to win a man. These challenges are a way through, to a different life. If you only win his love this way, you havenāt done enough. You need to set your sights on a life thatās bigger than him. Thatās not āLearn to love yourself so heāll love you too.ā Thatās not even āLearn to love yourself, period. Pull back from him and love yourself.ā See how heās still in the picture? You need to identify WHAT IS BIGGER THAN HIM[ā¦] Think like a beast, like a mountain, like a towering, essential, unimpeachable warrior. You are taking what you want, you are fulfilling your manifest destiny, you are at the center of the frame, youāre pulling in all of the focus, swallowing the landscape like an earthquake[ā¦] Think like a merciless visionary. Buy a sewing machine and learn to sew. Buy a French cookbook and learn to cook. Buy the complete Six Feet Under series and start from the beginning. Read everything by Wallace Stegner, Jennifer Egan, and Renata Adler. It will feel arbitrary. Do it anyway.Ā If you feel too sad to do these things, exercise first. If that doesnāt work, see a therapist. Consider less coffee. Consider how depressed youāve been all your life, and how anxious. Consider waking up and forcing yourself to think I AM BEAUTIFUL. TODAY IS MY CHANCE TO GROW. If that doesnāt work, do something else. Look for more answers. DO NOT SETTLE FOR SAD. DO NOT SETTLE FOR A SOGGY LIFE. Keep trying. Make adjustments. Keep doing new things. You will find who you are. Stop looking at him and stop looking in the mirror[ā¦] I have a giant bin of journals that are just like the one I quoted. All of those journals look like wasted fucking time, but they led me here. I shouldāve been reading more great books. I shouldāve learned another language. I shouldāve formed closer friendships when I was younger, instead of drinking too much. But I was doing something all along. I kept writing, to survive, and then one day I woke up and I thought like a merciless visionary, I thought like a conquistador, I thought like Wonder Woman with brass knuckles. Not every single day, of course, and not everyone loves me, no way. But I am my own rickety-ass invention, and every day I try to find my swagger all over again. I know how to find it most days. I donāt always look inward to find myself. Sometimes I just put on Vince Staplesās āBlue Suede.ā Sometimes I just drink an extra cup of tea and do a dance and think about how good it is to stand tall, to be a monster instead of a dull girl, to not have to ask or apologize just for existing anymore.

Iām thankful this year for my friends. Iām not talking about the friend you call when youāve had a bad day. I am talking about the friends Iāve collected over the years; the friends who have been there, on the other end of the phone no matter the miles, for more years and jobs and cities than...
This is perfect.

I am not Mike Brown. I am white. I am middle class. I am female. I am small. I am not considered a threat. When police see me they see someone who looks like them. They see their mothers, their daughters, their sisters, themselves. I am not at risk of being shot by police for existing while black. I am not at risk of being shot while unarmed. I am not at risk of being shot while armed with nothing more than a BB gun. I am not at risk of being shot for reaching for my wallet. I am privileged. But I am outraged. And if you arenāt outraged, then you arenāt paying attention. This is America in 2014. This is our reality. Itās so easy to get jaded and to ignore these atrocities, to act like this doesnāt affect us. Itās so easy to get apathetic. In the past it was the youth who protested. Where is the rage of the youth? Where is our rage? Like I said, I am not Mike Brown. But I am outraged.

When an initiative you recommended against, fails..
Itās a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until youāre ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any.

This February goes down as one of the best months of my life. From NYC to Vegas to Turks and Caicos, I rang in 30 the best ways possible. It was truly a birthday month to remember and I am forever grateful to my parents and friends for making it happen. Now back to real life. #30feelssowright
You have to stop believing that you need other peopleās permission to be okay with yourself. That however you do or donāt align with what other people value determines your worth. That however the world does or doesnāt show you kindness is a direct reflection of how much you deserve it. You have to be kind to yourself. Even, and probably most especially, when it seems least deserved.

Have you ever been a shy person? In many situations I am so shy that I start to hate myself for it and I think that it's holding me back in so many areas (work, friendships, love). I just don't know what to do and you often provide the most lovely advice.
I am staying with a friend right now who is one of the most incredibly inspiring and achieved people I know. She is also beautiful and generous. She has legs and energy for days, a dream job, a separate business she started from scratch where all proceeds go to charity, and she has traveled all over the world. But, I found myself laying in bed next to her last night saying, āYou know youāre not broken, right? I hear you saying things about yourself like youāre broken.ā Everyone, even the people who seem the most something (outgoing, energetic, driven, even-keeled, etc. etc.), has their own struggles and feelings of not enough or too much. I hear you talking like youāre broken here, too.
Shy is not something I have ever really been, no. I have anxiety from time-to-time that can transfer over to social situations and I imagine shyness falls somewhere on that same spectrum.
Whenever I donāt like a part of myself, I try to find something good in it. I know that I sometimes interrupt people. I canāt stand that I do it. But, I also know that it comes from wanting to make the other person feel accepted and understood. Hating yourself is only going to make it worse. Are there some good aspects to your shyness? Youāre a great observer? You remember little details of people or places that others do not? You never interrupt anyone?
Any personality āflawā can swallow you whole if you let it. Can make you feel like bits of your are rattling around broken. Try accepting that this is one part of you and then giving yourself a challenge each day if it is something you want to change. Smiling at someone in a coffee shop or talking to a friend about feeling shy or putting yourself out there in some way that is a little bit scary. Our minds are incredible things and, I believe, can be trained to think differently if we slowly work at it while treating ourselves with kindness and patience.
If none of that helps, please know there are people in the world, myself included, who do not see shyness as coldness or indifference or weird, but as people who will open up beautifully if you take the time to get to know them.
This is beautiful.
Never forget 3 types of people in your life:
Who helped you in your difficult times.
Who left you in your difficult times.
Who put you in difficult times.
I understand, in a way I never could have in my 20s, that sometimes the best way to resolve a conflict is to go in the other room and read a magazine for a while.
