     `at… at four,` jason gives her a withering look, but can’t quite maintain the disdain required to get his point across; he’s not good at staying mad or irritated at people. `kilala, did you leave it to the last minute, or is your professor just a huge dickwad who assigns last minute essays?`

“Uhhh-- both? Neither? It’s more like, I have two essays, an oral presentation, a research project, and a short story due by next week Tuesday. So. I mean, I doubt they’re collaborating, but my professors did all assign stuff at once.” She is immune to your look, Jason. She’s desperate enough that she turned to energy drinks. Do you realize how much she dislikes those?

`you've been up all this time?` he's sure she's not nocturnal. it's not exactly something one can ASK a friend close enough to be a sister, who also happened to be very sensitive about her — transformations. but he worried, he worried she was running on the wrong schedules for her body and depleting energy with her protective activity. `kilala, please, take a nap. i'll cover for you; whatever stuff you needed done that i can substitute, tell me. i'll do it. YOU need to rest.`

Sango gets a glare for betraying her caretaker in such a way (she had almost gotten away with it!), but all Kilala gets in return is a shrug. And when she tries to protest her need for sleep, she's met with Jason's look. Such a thing would usually be ineffective, but she is SO TIRED. Kilala’s shoulders slump, and Sango grins victoriously behind her.

“Jason Grace, you are a miracle in wolf’s clothing.” Well, on second thought-- “Are you sure you can take care of the kids? I mean, not that they aren’t great, or that you’re not great with kids, but....”

“Did you just--” She almost breaks character. Anyone who knows her well enough will see the twitch in the corner of her lips, the way the bridge of her nose wrinkles just a bit, the slight narrowing of her eyes, for what they are: contained laughter. Kilala lets out a slow breath and sneaks her other hand around to tickle the back of his neck.

`i come bearing gifts of hot chocolate, blankets, and — uh. hold on, lemme check the basket,` yep: BASKET. of baked goods. he's like little roman riding hood. `ooh! brownies!`

“Um,” Kilala starts, and then has to stop for laughter. “Okay, uh-- first of all, that’s adorable. Oh my gods, you’re like a misplaced adult from Sesame Street.”

She tilts her head to try and peer inside the basket (she can smell more than just brownies in there). “I know you didn’t make all that, dude. I appreciate the dedication, but how many people have already been pulled into this shenanigan?”

“This is an open invitation to stop acting like an idiot.” Kilala erases something and goes back to staring at her notebook. “Proceed with caution, I guess.”

Kilala goes for a hug immediately, kicking her feet a little when he lifts her up. Jason gives the BEST hugs.

“You could definitely set up a hugs-and-advice booth. Charge a nickel, like they do in Peanuts.” She leans back (but refuses to take her hand off his arm for now), grinning devilishly. “Did you miss me?”

he's definitely comfortable enough with her to not hesitate when it came to hugs--jason marches on up to kilala, beaming fit to bust, and rather than say 'welcome back!', he picks her clean off her feet in a hug. complete with tiny twirl and cackling from the roman sasquatch himself. glad to see her in one piece? absolutely! determined to maybe squash the life out of her with that hug? uh, maybe, possibly--oops. `oh, shit--sorry, sorry. i'll just. put you down, now--`

She’s exhausted. She’s worked through most of the grief on her own, as well as she can. The only one who has any idea what happened is the chief of the the demon slayers, and she isn’t inclined to share any time soon. She is completely unprepared for such an enthusiastic welcome. She is trying to muster up enough energy for a smile and a lie when her breath is suddenly stolen from her lungs. With an “Oof,” she is lifted into the air.

She’s too shocked to respond at first, but by the time he sets her down, she’s struggling not to get too emotional. Rather than risk him seeing that, yes, she is struggling not to cry, she leans in and wraps her arms around him in another hug. Less aggressive, maybe, but just as sincere. “Missed you,” she mumbles. “Sorry I was gone so long. I didn’t mean to.”

Kilala was special enough to get two gifts in one bag. The first was a ziploc baggie full of catnip; Will thought he was hilarious, evidently, and would gladly receive a good smacking if she didn't share in his humor. But there's another gift under that, a picture book of big cats that he'd happened to find somewhere in the city. There's a note tucked in the book like a bookmark: "Sorry about the catnip. I had to. Go wild with this- just not literally. Merry Christmas, Ki."

Kilala would be more amused if it wasn’t such an accurate gift. She does like catnip- has it in her tea sometimes, even- and the glare she sends his way is an embarrassed one. The book she is more than happy with, however. She loves to read with the kids, and while Sango is a little old for this kind of book, she’s sure Kohaku will be delighted.

“You’re lucky I like you so much,” She says it grumpily, but her smile betrays her. “Merry Christmas, you nerd.”

His present is wrapped somewhat haphazardly in a box. He also got two gifts. The first is a Rapunzel themed hairbrush, with ‘Long Hair, Don’t Care’ printed on the handle.. The second is a bag of caramels and chocolates. Most of them are square, but there’s a few arrows and suns in there.
