This photoset is my way of celebrating my one year natural hair anniversary.  This year was not only about embracing my natural hair … it was also about learning to embrace myself - something I felt that I had forgotten how to do.

365 days ago, I realized I needed to stop self-hating, and instead learn to embrace my natural self - my natural hair, my skin and all its scars/flaws, my body, everything.  To say the past year has been difficult would be an understatement, but I was at the point where I had to learn to accept myself, or I would continue to self-destruct.

For some reason, my hair growth coincided with the growth of my self-acceptance.  As my hair grew, so did my confidence in my physical appearance, as well as my confidence in my skills/knowledge/abilities as a person.

It took me 22 years to be able to say that I accept myself for who I am, even if I still struggle to embrace myself.  I still have a far way to go when it comes to actually loving myself and all of my flaws.  But I’m happy with who I am, and I wouldn’t want to trade lives or bodies with anyone in the world.  I love myself more than I ever have, and that is a victory.
