GRRM accidentally wrote the ultimate āchild therapist in a murder palaceā scenario. It is genuinely hilarious and so revealing how Sansa Stark is basically Westerosās most powerful confessional booth without even trying and everyone just⦠unloads their darkest thoughts on her. Sheās eleven, and yet sheās basically the safest person in all of Westeros.
People meet her and immediately go: āHere are the deepest traumas of my soul.ā
She doesnāt coax. She doesnāt manipulate. She doesnāt threaten. She just quietly listens with big, polite, socially trained eyes⦠and fully grown, traumatized adults absolutely collapse in front of her.
Sandor? Sheās a child he barely knows, and heās already unloading the story of how Gregor burned half his face off like he walked into therapy before his appointment.
Tyrion? He starts out trying to be polite and diplomatic, and ends up talking about his insecurities, his self-loathing, his marriage, his resentment toward his father, his loneliness, his desperation for connection. All of this to a girl he knows is trapped, terrified, and unable to give anything back. He sees a girl who is gentle, frightened, listening, and he like every other adult around her instinctively tries to unburden himself, to turn her into a balm for his wounds, a stand-in for the compassion he never received.
Cersei? Gives Sansa an entire monologue about marriage, sex, violence, hatred, political entrapment everything sheās endured with Robert as if sheās talking to a peer rather than an eleven-year-old hostage she despises and Cersei canāt help but dump decades of frustration, fear, and resentment right into her lap.
Littlefinger? He treats her like sheās a combination diary / mirror / ghost of the past. He basically outlines his villain rĆ©sumĆ© to her in real time and then wonders why things fall apart.
Lysa? She literally confesses to murder not one murder but multiple murders right in front of Sansa, as casually as if she were talking about afternoon tea. She treats Sansa like some kind of diary-slash-counselor, spilling every secret, every irrational fear, every tiny betrayal. Itās simultaneously horrifying and absurdly funny because Sansa just sits there, all polite and composed, while Lysa goes full meltdown mode.
Everyone tells Sansa everything, and she tells no one anything. Sheās the safest person in Kingās Landing to talk to because she wonāt judge, betray, interrupt, demand, or weaponize what you tell her. Sheās a child, but sheās also the most perfectly trained court listener Westeros has ever produced. People project onto her. People confess to her. People spill their trauma onto her shoes.
The way everyone completely loses all control around Sansa shows how ridiculous Westeros adults get around someone who just listens. And the kicker? She never asked for any of it. Sansa Stark is the realmās unconscious therapist, and sheās doing it for free, against her will, while everyone else holds a sword to her throat.
