Using ๆใ to express your feelings in Japanese
A lot of people seem to think that expressing your feelings in Japanese is difficult, and while it can be, there are a lot of different variations used in Japanese to express feelings. I promise it isnโt that bad!
First, letโs start with some vocabulary:
ๅๆๅๆฅฝ
ใใฉใใใใ = human emotions (joy, anger, humor, etc)
Common Nouns:ย In Japanese, ใ-adjectives can often become nouns (้ซใ = tall, ้ซใ = height). Be careful not to use adjectives on accident when you should use nouns!
ๆฐๆใก๏ผใใใก๏ผfeeling(s)
ๆฐๅ๏ผใใถใ๏ผfeeling(s)/mood
ๆๆ ๏ผใใใใใ๏ผemotions
ๅใณ๏ผใใใใณ๏ผdelight
ๅนธใ๏ผใใใใ๏ผhappiness
ๆใ๏ผใใใ๏ผanger
ๆฒใใฟ๏ผใใชใใฟ๏ผsadness
Common Verbs: Similarly, a lot of adjectives/nouns and verbs share the same stems, but will have different endings. Be careful!
ๅใถ๏ผใใใใถ๏ผto be delighted
ๆฒใใ๏ผใใชใใ๏ผto be sad
ๆใ๏ผใใใ๏ผto be/get angry
ๆฟๆใใ๏ผใใใฉใใ๏ผto be furious
ๆคๆ จใใ๏ผใตใใใใใ๏ผto be furious
Youโll commonly see these verbs appear in ใฆ-form in order to describe a present state, such as ๆใฃใฆใใ (to be in a state of anger) or ๅใใงใใ (to be in a state of delight).
Common Adjectives:
ๅฌใใ๏ผใใใใ๏ผhappy
ๆฒใใ๏ผใใชใใ๏ผsad
ๆฅฝใใ๏ผใใฎใใ๏ผfun
่พใ๏ผใคใใ๏ผhard/tough/painful
ใใคใใhard/tough
ๅใ๏ผใใใ๏ผwow, great
ใใฐใใexpresses various things
When describing your own happiness, itโs more natural to use ๅฌใใ and not ๅใใงใใ. However, when describing someone elseโs happiness, you should use ๅใใงใใ and not ๅฌใใ.
่พใ๏ผ่พใ๏ผand ่พใ๏ผใใใ๏ผlook the exact same, but one meansย โtoughโ and the other meansย โspicy.โ Pay attention to context!
Expressing your emotions
When describing your own emotions, itโs actually quite uncommon to use any first person pronouns (such as ็ง) unless the subject is not at all clear. Likely, though, the subject is you and the listener knows this.
Joy & Happiness
ใใใๅฌใใใช๏ผใผ Iโm happy! ใใช is often used in Japanese when expressing your feelings ใใ, ใใ, and ใใผ are also often used ใใฃใใ๏ผใผ Yay! ใคใงใผใค๏ผใผ Yaaay! ๆฅฝใใ๏ผใผ Fun! ๆฅฝใใใใ ใผ Using ใใใ can express the nuance ofย โtoo much funโ ใฏใฏใฏใฏใใ ใผ Iโm getting excited! ใItโs common in Japanese to use onomatopoeia to express emotion! ใใใ๏ผใผ Wow! Great! ใThis is commonly used in variations (ใใใใ๏ผใใใ๏ผand so on)
Relief & Surprise
ใใใใใใฃใ๏ผใผ Iโm relieved! ๅฎๅฟใใ๏ผใใใใ๏ผใผ I feel relieved. ใใ๏ผใผ What? ใใ๏ผใผ No way! ใพใใ ใผ No way! It canโt be true. ใพใ ใผ Really? No way! Seriously? ใพใใ ใผ Really? No way! Seriously? ใThis one is sometimes seen as more masculine ไฟกใใใใชใ ใผ I canโt believe it
Nervousness & Sadness
็ทๅผตใใ๏ผใใใกใใ๏ผใผ Iโm nervousโฆ ใReally common, and can also be used in its ใฆ-form! ใใญใใญใใ ใผ I feel nervous. ๆฒใใ๏ผใใชใใ๏ผใผ Iโm sad. ๅฏใใ๏ผใใฟใใใปใใณใใ๏ผใผ Iโm lonely / I miss someone ๆ้ฌฑ๏ผใใใใค๏ผใผ Depression ๆฐใๆป ๅ ฅใ๏ผใใใใใ๏ผใผ I feel depressed ใใฃใใ ใผ Iโm disappointed ่ฝใก่พผใ๏ผใใกใใ๏ผใผ Iโm getting upset!
Anger
ใฒใฉใ๏ผใผ Thatโs terrible! Youโre awful! ใคใฉใคใฉใใ ใผ I feel irritated ้ ญใซใใ ใผ Iโm so pissed off ใ ใซใคใ ใผ Iโm angry
Embarrassment: ๆฅใใใใ๏ผใฏใใใใ๏ผใผ Iโm embarrassed. Fear: ๆใ๏ผใใใ๏ผใผ Iโm scared. Envy: ็พจใพใใ๏ผใใใใพใใ๏ผใผ Iโm jealous.
Using ๆใ and ๆใใ
If you talk to a Japanese person for any length of time, youโll hear this come up quite often. The readings are โใใใโ andย โใใใใโ. Remember that the meaning of ๆ isย โfeeling,โ so if you see it in kanji compounds youโre likely dealing with someone to do with feelingย (emotion or otherwise).
ๆใ is the noun form and ๆใใ is the verb form:
ใฉใใชๆใใใใพใใใ๏ผHow did you feel?
ใฉใใชๆใใพใใใ๏ผHow did you feel?
These feelings can be both physicalย and emotional.
ๅคใชๆใใใใโฆ ใธใใชใใใใใใโฆ I felt strangeโฆ
ๅฝผๅฅณใฏใชใใๅทใใๆใใใใใญใ ใใฎใใใฏใชใใใคใใใใใใใใใใญใ She seems to be kind of cold, huh?
ๅฐ้ใใใฃใใฟใใใ ใใฉไฝใๆใใชใใฃใใ ใใใใใใฃใใฟใใใ ใใฉใชใซใใใใใชใใฃใใ It seems there was an earthquake but I didnโt feel anything.
There are a lot of colloquial uses as well, particularly: ใฃใฆๆใ, which is a really common way for Japanese to express the feeling ofย โitโs likeโฆโ
ๅญฆๆ กใฏใญโฆใใใใใใชใฃใฆๆใใ I think Iโve had enough with school.
็งใฐใใๅใใฆใใใฃใฆๆใใ I feel like Iโm the only one that works.
You can use ใฃใฆๆใ in a lot of ways, and itโs especially common when speaking.
ๆฐใใใ
Use this when expressing that you sense something/feel something but canโt quite understand why you feel that way.
If youโre breaking up with your significant other, you might say something like ็งใใกใใใ็ตใใใฎใใใชๆฐใใใ which roughly translates toย โI feel like weโre over now.โ
้ข็ฝใใใจใ่ตทใใใฟใใใชๆฐใใใโฆ ใใใใใใใจใใใใใฟใใใชใใใใโฆ I feel like something interesting will happenโฆ
ๆ ่กใใใๆฐใใใใ ใใใใใใใใใใใใ I feel like going on a trip.
้ฃในใๆฐใใใชใใ ใในใใใใใชใใ I donโt feel like eating.
Try to express your emotions as much as possible when talking to people, especially if youโre talking about your day or something that you did with that person. It adds a personal touch and will make sure your conversation remains warm for both of you.
