Big Badlands Overlook - Badlands National Park
November 6th: Today, I visited Badlands National Park for the second time this year. Badlands is one of the most interesting places I've ever visited. The buttes and spires that rise sharply above the surrounding prairie are oddly beautiful. These formations were created through the process of deposition and erosion. The colorful layers you'll see throughout this post are composed of tiny grains of sand, silt, and clay that have been cemented together into sedimentary rocks. The layers were deposited during the late Cretaceous Period (67 to 75 million years ago) throughout the Late Eocene (34 to 37 million years ago) and Oligocene Epochs (26 to 34 million years ago).
Sunset at the Salton Sea The Salton Sea is an extremely shallow, saline rift lake located on the San Andreas Fault. The sea was accidentally created when a cut was made in the nearby Colorado River to increase water flow to irrigation canals. Long story short, the canals overflowed into the Salton Basin for nearly two years before the cut was repaired. The lack of an outflow of water from the lake along with salt deposits in the lake bed has resulted in extreme salinity, which has killed a large amount of the sea's fish. If you ever visit, be prepared for the grossest smelling place in SoCal -- This photo was taken facing the Santa Rosa Mountains.
