summary: the morning after a drunken you confess your true feelings to your best friend at a karaoke bar, you and austin finally confront the truth that’s been lingering between you for years. pairing: Austin butler x fem!reader. word count: 789! FLUFF!!!
The pounding in your head was the first thing you noticed when you cracked your eyes open. The second was the familiar ceiling you’ve seen after all these years of sleepovers, the muted beige of Austin’s room. You groaned, rolling onto your side, and immediately regretted it when the motion sent your stomach lurching.
“Morning, sunshine,” came a low voice, far too amused for your current state.
You peeked through one squinted eye to find Austin leaning casually in the doorway, hoodie on, hair still damp from a shower. He held out a glass of water and some Advil, his expression somewhere between smug and gentle.
“I hate you,” you rasped, though you took both gratefully.
“You love me,” he shot back automatically, then froze like he realized exactly what he’d said. His eyes darted to yours, a flicker of something unguarded before he cleared his throat. “I mean...I mean…” He trails off not sure how he can recover from that slip up.
Heat rushed to your cheeks as memories of last night crashed into you all at once: the neon glow, the tequila, your own unfiltered confession. Groaning, you yanked one of Austin’s pillows over your head, muffling your voice. “Come on, Aus. You literally could not have made that any more awkward.”
He laughed, nervous and a little sheepish, the sound vibrating in the air between you. “Sorry, sorry. But to be fair you’re the one who dropped love bombs in the middle of a karaoke bar. So I didn’t start the awkwardness.”
You peeked out from beneath the pillow just far enough to glare at him, though your lips betrayed you with the start of a smile. “Wow. Way to throw me under the bus.”
“I’m just saying,” he teased, holding his hands up in mock defense. But his eyes softened as they lingered on you, and his voice dropped quieter. “You weren’t exactly subtle, you know.”
The playful spark fizzled into something heavier. Hugging the pillow tighter to your chest, your heart thudded so hard it almost drowned out your thoughts. You drew in a shaky breath, summoning every ounce of courage. “Yeah, well… I wasn’t lying last night. Not even a little.”
That made him still. The grin faded, and for a long moment he just looked at you, like he was trying to decide if he could let himself believe what he’d just heard. His eyes searched yours, so intent it made your breath catch, as though he was memorizing every detail of your face at that moment.
Finally, his shoulders eased, the tension melting away as a slow, genuine smile tugged at his lips. “Good,” he murmured, voice low but warm. “Because I wasn’t lying either.”
Your pulse skipped, and before you could even process, he reached out and tugged the pillow from your arms, tossing it aside. His hand found yours, fingers threading together with an ease that felt like it had been waiting years to happen.
“I meant every word I said last night, Y/N,” he continued, thumb brushing gently across your knuckles. “I’ve felt it for so long, I just didn’t know how to say it without risking… this. Us.”
The emotion in his voice cracked your chest wide open, and you couldn’t stop the smile breaking over your face. “Aus…” you whispered, leaning closer.
He laughed softly, shaking his head in disbelief, eyes bright with something unguarded and real. “I love you,” he said simply, like it was the easiest truth he’d ever spoke.
“Really?” you breathed, your voice almost trembling.
He leaned in, close enough that you could feel the soft tick of his breath against your lips. “Really. I love you,” he whispered, so certain, so steady. And then he kissed you.
It was slow at first, careful, like he was still testing the edges of something fragile. But when you leaned into him—fingers curling into his hoodie, pulling him closer—he let out the quietest sound, half relief, half disbelief, and the kiss deepened. Warmth bloomed in your chest, rushing through every nerve like fireworks, and for a moment, the rest of the world simply ceased to exist.
When he finally pulled back, just enough to rest his forehead against yours, his smile was brighter than you’d ever seen it. “Told you karaoke night would end badly for my dignity,” he teased softly, still catching his breath.
You laughed, giddy and breathless, brushing your nose against his. “Yeah, but it ended perfectly for me.”
