"fuck bucktommy this" "i hate buddie and BOBs that" can we all put aside our differences and acknowledge the freaking plot is LOST here???
did we as a collective watch a 911 dispatcher actively convince a caller to off himself... and just... let it slide? i am not by any means a professional here but i feel like that just makes zero sense in both a logical sense and for maddie as a character. her ass would have been removed!!! the sue i know would sure as hell not have let that happen, especially not directly in front of her. and athena being totally okay with it??? is this not an abuse of power by maddie? and why was maddie herself the only one to seem to think what she did was wrong? so. many. questions.
i fear that 911 has always been a ridiculous show. shark on the interstate. baby in a pipe. i could go on. despite the inherent lack of realism in some of the calls, the characters, plots/subplots, and overall flow in seasons 1 through 6 was pretty good. it had slow spots, and season 1 was... well, season 1. but still! it was engaging, and one episode felt connected to the next. there were cliffhangers. relationships were organic and so was the dialogue. emergencies were often and made sense. new characters that were introduced either stuck around or had plausible reasons for leaving.
now i feel like we don't have any of that. episodes feel disjointed. characterization is straying, the pace is somehow too fast and dragging at the same time, and calls are becoming honestly preposterous. the bees?? the plane on the highway??? why am i only seeing hen and karen when they're fighting for custody of one of their children? why the fuck are we supposed to like gerrard now?? the quality is getting ultimately worse. season 7, being shorter, was what i thought to be something like a segway season. new producer, so leeway was a given. i felt like that season being rushed was at least a little bit excusable, if only because it was new to abc and because there was a writer's strike going on. benefit of the doubt, you know?
except it's not season 7 now. it's halfway through season 8, and it's not getting better at all. before, when the show was on fox, there were like 2 or three bad plotlines for every 10. it's a corny firefighter show, something you know isn't going to be dead accurate, but real enough to enjoy and suspend your disbelief because the characters and their drama is hooking. i liked it a lot- it was my comfort show. now it's like that ratio is reversed. maybe 1 or 2 of every 10 plotlines is a good one, and even then they're rushed.
i don't know. i come onto here because i watch a new episode and notice a significant drop in quality, and want to find discourse on it... and every single post i find is either bitching about tommy, buddie, or ryan and oliver. it's like the fandom has morphed into a massive ship war, and we're missing the fact that the show just isn't as good as it used to be.
i think we're missing the point.
when i said this i didn't mean that the price of upping the quality should be killing bobby nash man wtf
hoping to GOD aisha pulls through with this one and brings back my show shes a paramedic and we are in dire need of resuscitation!!
I actually have sooo many issues with 911 lately that haven't even got much to do with any ships.
Like. They wrote out almost all of the side characters. Chris is gone, Linda and Sue are gone, Athena's kids are gone (even though Harry just moved in with her and Bobby again? Seriously, where is Harry?), Ravi is gone, Carla is gone. I know the GA maybe don't care that much, casual viewers might not even have noticed that this many characters have just vanished from the show, but in my opinion this is one of the things that give a show running as long as 911 life. Having a big cast is a good thing. Otherwise things are going to get very monotonous very soon.
Actually, that's my second point. They keep repeating storylines! Every season Hen and Karen have to fight a custody battle over one of their kids.
Every season Eddie ends up realising he has a lot of repressed trauma and issues which keep him from leading a healthy happy and free life.
Every season Bathena realise that they have communication issues and they fight about it, but then something traumatic happens and they forgive each other without ever really talking things out.
Every season we are reminded that Maddie's most prominent character trait is "traumatised", the writers just alternatingly bring up Doug again and sometimes the ppd arc.
Every season we see Buck being somewhat restless, looking and searching for something that will bring him true happiness and cycling through love interests that never stick around and each time when you think "oh, there it is, he's getting somewhere now" the writers go "BEEEP! WRONG!" and we start all over again. [This is not just about recent events aka Tommy, the break-up and Buck potentially going back to his 1.0 ways, this also happened in season 6 when he had his "it doesn't matter what other people see in me, I'm enough" revelation only to suddenly be like "omg, Natalia just sees me".]
And Chimney- he had his moment last season with the wedding episode, Kenneth Choi really ate that episode up, but his most prominent character trait is "Maddie's supportive husband". There's really not that much going on with him otherwise.
Another point I briefly touched upon above is consistency. Like Harry moving back in with Athena and Bobby and then just vanishing. Or Gerrard being more like a slightly unfriendly grandpa than an actual antagonist in season 8 when he was still spouting slurs in season 7.
And the timeline! We talked about this before ("last March", Mara's fostering to adoption timeline, Tommy tranferring to harbour "5 years ago"), but the newest "Tommy was actually Abby's Tommy" twist just adds to that. Tommy was with Abby for over 2 years. They were engaged. This was at a time when he was still at the 118. Tommy dated Abby presumably because he was in denial or maybe because he was hiding. In either case, wouldn't his team at least have heard about his fiancƩe, Abby the dispatcher? Wouldn't that have rung a bell when Buck eventually brought her around only a year or two later? Tommy did talk about his private life at least a little at work, even under Gerrard. It just doesn't make sense. (Not to mention this seems wildly out of character for Tommy who around the same time also said about himself "being single is easier".)
Then there's the pacing. This was a huge issue in season 7. They jumped from one personal soap opera drama to the next without taking any breathers, had almost no procedural in their drama the whole season, still somehow decided to spend one third of the entire season just on the opening disaster and also squeezed in a "Bobby begins for the third time now" episode. But okay, it was a shortened season, there were strikes, they switched networks, they were under a lot of pressure - I'll cut them some slack. At least they set up a bunch of interesting stuff for the following season.
But we're in season 8 now. The renewal was announced very early, they had a lot of time to plan this time. Also they have almost double the episodes they had last season, there's really no need to rush any of the major plots. I am done cutting them slack.
They wanna do a 3 part opening disaster again? Okay fine, you have the time now. I feel like they could've easily done it in 2 episodes (especially 8x02 felt a little "eh"), but okay. Better than the breakneck speed you were going at befo- Oh, what's that? 8x04 flying in with a steel chair. You resolved 70% percent of the plots you set up last season in one single episode with no build up, no emotional pay off and no lasting consequences? And you also squeezed in multiple unrelated calls at the same time? Damn, okay then. Good-bye potentially interesting storylines. Fuck me for being invested I guess. I thought there would at least maybe be some follow up in 8x05, but no.
Now that Halloween episode wasn't bad, it was actually the best episode of this season imo, but instead of following up on previously established conflicts and developments they just hit us with new Wilson family trauma and conflict that was also immediately fixed again. And now 8x06 has speedrun and dumped another storyline that had potential to go to deeper and interesting places. Not gonna talk too much about that though because this post is about the show as a whole, not ships.
And I am not yet convinced that there will be much more to come on the only thing that's left from last season: Eddie's deep dive into his trauma and repression. It's totally possible at this point that being told "you deserve nice things" by a random stranger actually solved all of his problems, it would be very in tone with 911's new style.
What are they even gonna do with the rest of this season? Revisiting the Hotshots set sounds fun, but ultimately inconsequential. You know what's great about a regular old procedural drama with ~20 episodes per season that comes on weekly? You have time. You can let the viewers sit with their emotions and thoughts for a week and keep them engaged by stretching things out a little.
But why should I bother getting emotionally invested in problems the characters are gonna solve within the same episode anyway? Or rather, even if I wanted to, how am I supposed to care if you don't give me the time to develop any feelings about anything that's happening? "Henren lost in court and are now completely forbidden from seeing Mara at all!" Damn, that must be so har- "JUST KIDDING! Ortiz is exposed and everything is perfect again now." Oh. Okay then, I guess.
Bottom line: The characters are all stuck in their own hamster wheels, they keep cutting side characters that could bring a breeze of fresh air (I'm honestly surprised they even kept Josh until now), they rush through all the storylines a such a ridiculous speed that I don't even have time to feel any sort of way about it, they don't even try to keep a consistency or sensible timeline going and they seem to strongly prioritise random funny bits that'll entertain the very casual viewers right now in this moment (tiger call, Billy Boils, Bee-nado, the 'Stache tm, "wait, it's the same Abby?", Gerrard being a fangirl at heart) instead of playing the long game and catering to people who actually pay a little attention to the show.
[On that last remark: I'm not talking about hardcore fans who analyse every single frame here, I mean casual fans who've watched the show on and off again for a while and who may not be involved in fandom but genuinely care about the show.]
I mean. What am I even still doing here? The show is treading water and I end up disappointed more often than not. I'm still holding out a little hope that they actually will do something interesting with Eddie and his sea-monkeys, but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.
reblogging AGAIN because augh!!! why!!!! i just want my show back!!!!

fic idea: 911 pirates AU where they're sailing or whatever and then eddie is almost pulled under by a siren.
it's only once he's safe onboard that anyone asks why the siren looked like Buck.

how i wish my political nerd boyfriend would react to my questions
i need a scene where buck gets hit by a car like shannon did and heās like, mostly fine, maybe just a concussion a few bruised ribs and a one day hospital stay, but overall okay. but the 118 is the station responding to the call and they find him and eddie completely freaks out about it. like heās genuinely inconsolable and nobody knows what to do because heās actively having a panic attack and is refusing to let go of buck so they just shove him into the ambulance alongside him and buck is gripping onto his hand trying to reassure him that heās okay and that he isnāt leaving but all eddie can see is visions of shannon dying in his head and he realizes /oh/. heās in love with buck.

several sentences... monday?
it's technically monday right now but i was tagged by @cal-daisies-and-briars so i have to post something. so unfortunately i have not been paying my fics the attention they deserve BUT i have been writing a bit of poetry lately so have my most recent one! it's called 'an ode to my friend, the sun'.
Sometimes, alone, I visit the with the sun. She and I sit awhile we whisper silent secrets across vast fields occasional oceans barren city expanses. Her voice reaches my ears no matter where we are,Ā a bright thing honeyĀ gold the juice of an orange, dripping to your elbows. I was born in the dark. The sun was asleep when I arrived, on the other side of the earth yet when she first saw me, i knew her and she knew me. She and I are old friends. When we catch up I can't help but notice her beauty. She paints clouds vivid, shining swimming in blue color that stings your eyes, makes you flinch from its raw bite fleeting, changing. When I'm with her I cast a shadow my potential laid out on the pavement she knows who I could be if I chose.

something something i feel the raw impact of human creation on the finest deepest parts of my soul, creation that is for the sake of creation and not of production, and i have to sit back for a while because the veil that's shielding the true nature of mankind has been briefly pushed to the side and what it reveals is so shatteringly real and emotional and breathtaking. and then the veil falls in place again so i get up to make myself a plate of leftover spaghetti and scroll instagram for a few hours because my humanity doesn't seem as important as it did a moment ago
okay but a like post-series fic i want that's like: steve harrington being the only man left in hawkins fighting monsters
and not like a 'everyone died, last man standing' way but just. they beat it back, the story ends, nice little tie-up and neatly concluded, eleven loses her powers because their world is completely cut from the other. and life goes on. eddie (yes, eddie lives au don't fight me) goes off with his band, robin-nancy-jargyle off to separate cities for college. the kids go to high school, graduate high school, and scatter across the country. joyce and hop buy a beach house far-far-far away from goddamn hawkins indiana.
steve though. steve stays. he does it too without comment, takes all their calls telling him all these amazing things. the years pass. the calls are fewer and far between. he's mostly in contact with only dustin and robin. except robin's out of country doing some crazy temp job in some remote country, she never catches him at home right now so just leaves him messages. and it takes a couple of weeks for dustin to realize he hasn't gotten steve on the phone.
frantically he calls around "have you heard from steve???" except the most people talk to steve anymore is like phone calls during holidays and holy shit what could have happened??
and what if it's back?
cue everyone who can in that moment, rushing back. eddie hopping on a flight from fucking london direct to indianapolis somehow, heart in his throat. he manages to meet hopper in the airport and they pick up max and dustin at the bus station.
they get to hawkins that is even more different that what they left. a smaller town, a town that shuts down completely when the sun sets. it's creepy and deserted.
except for the fucking upside down monsters of course.
and they're in their stupid little rental in front of this demogorgon and they're screaming but then the thing just goes splat on the concrete and steve fucking harrington is blinking owlishly at them.
"Oh, hey guys!" he calls jogging up to the driver's side window. "Wow, what brought you back down this way? You should have told me, I would have told you about the curfew!"
turns out steve just forgot to pay his phone bill that month, didn't even realize he was missing calls and he's been fighting monsters the entire time because actually they WEREN'T cut off from the upside down at all and he's just been casually fighting monsters for the remaining hawkins residenceāthe whole town knows now and steve's the guy you call when you have a monster problem
sidebar: WAYNE still lives in hawkins, and he and steve are best friends, eddie munson you are gonna LOSE YOUR MIND
fuck it friday <3
tagged by @cal-daisies-and-briars. been a minute since i was on here, got my phone service cut and lost any/all will to write but we're so back!! here's a bit of chapter two for this fic.
He canāt leave this place. He knows Buck did. This is different, though. This isnāt where Buck went. People are living here, and in his other life theyāre decomposing under six feet of dirt. Theyāre piles of ashes sifting through the gutters. Theyāre dead because of him. How could he knowingly return to that? It would be like killing them all over again. A small corner of his mind whispers Athenaās name. Then Buckās. What about them, it asks slyly. Youād leave them?Ā Bobby shuts it up. Iām not leaving them, he tells the voice. Iām helping them.Ā Are you? Iāll prove it, he thinks. Out comes the phone again. He dials Athenaās number. It goes directly to voicemail. Itās a generic, āleave a message after the beepā, but he doesnāt care. Determined, he dials Buckās number next. It rings for a while, but nobody answers. Undeterred, Bobby rings again. Buck has work; he should be awake. As the dial tone echoes through the room, jarring and harsh, he checks the time. Even with different time zones, their shift should have started at least an hour ago. Finally, Buck picks up.
no pressure tags (lmk if you want off or on the list, vaguely tagging people ik are in the fandom atp bc idk what else to do):
@diazpatcher @tizniz @satashiiwrites
new fic alert!
bobby didn't wake up for two weeks. what was he dreaming about while he was asleep?
read it here!
snippet of chapter one:
Bobby trails off. If Marcy's here, then that means⦠āWhere⦠where are the kids?ā He waits, holding his breath. Pleading with God. Marcy still looks like she might leave at any moment. āBrook is at a friend's and Robbie's at home,ā she finally tells him. āBobby, you're really freaking me out.ā Bobby barely hears her. He's too busy fighting tears. His kids. They're alive. They're safe. The tears come anyways. Marcy, for whatever reason, stays where she is. She always had been too forgiving when it came to Bobby. He ducks his head, putting his face in his hands. She graciously allows him a moment to control himself. When he finally manages to meet her eye again, she's giving him a strange look. He knows then that he needs to get himself under control. He desperately scrubs a hand across his face, roughly wiping the agonizing relief. āSorry. Iā I'm sorry. I must have had a nightmare. I'm okay now. Don't know what came over me.ā His voice is wobbly, unsure. Marcy doesn't look convinced, but she nods. He doesn't know why, but she lets him have it. āIt's okay. You've been out a couple days. It makes sense if you had some weird dreams, right?ā Dreams. Huh.
several sentences sunday!
tagged by @cal-daisies-and-briars. here's a wip for a fic that's based on the s7 finale. since bobby took 2 weeks to wake up, i'm assuming he was in a medically induced coma. do we know where i'm going with this? that's right, we're cooking up a fun little bobby coma dream.
here's a snippet of what i have so far. 1st chapter is posted here.
Bobby Nash wakes up in a hospital bed with aching lungs and a strange sense of vertigo. In front of him is an unfamiliar doctor with a clipboard in her hand. She's scribbling something, but when she notices his eyes open, she tucks the pen into her pocket. āHello, Mr. Nash. How are you feeling?ā Bobby clears his throat, wincing at the raw crackle that echoes into the room. āA little sore,ā he admits, raising a hand to his neck to feel if it's swollen. He pauses. āSorry, but are you new here? My team and I see a lot of this hospital, and I don't think I recognize you.ā The doctor tilts her head. āNope, been on this floor for about two years now. It's you that's the new face, Mr. Nash.ā Bobby frowns. That doesn't seem right. In fact, the hospital itself doesn't seem right. Now that he's really looking, he's noticing that he's not in either Cedars-Sinai or First Presbyterian. The furniture is different, the wallpaper a dull green where it's normally an eggshell blue. Through the open doorway he can spot a framed painting he's certainly never seen in his life. It's a watercolor ocean with a cheerful ferris wheel in the foreground. The strokes border on abstract, and it looks as if the ferris wheel is rising out of the sea. He shivers. Something is not right here.
