Today is the final critique of Pratt Institute’s Hospitality Project.

Through this project we have learned how to work in a team setting and form bonds that go beyond those of design. This project has allowed the team to redesign the lifestyle of hostel in India and learn about a country known for its rich history, crafts, and culture. The most valuable gift that we have gotten back from the project is the connections and friendships we have made our colleagues. We are proud to say that David Foley’s Section 5 class of INT-302 has successfully designed Laal Bagh Chowk to be a new hostel design for Bangalore, India!

Shilpa Shastras

is an umbrella term for numerous Hindu texts that describe manual arts, the standards for religious Hindu iconography, prescribing among other things, the proportions of a sculptured figure, as well as rules of Hindu architecture. 

Sixty-four such arts or crafts, sometimes called bāhya-kalā “external or practical arts”, are traditionally enumerated, including carpentry, architecture, jewellery, farriery, acting, dancing, music, medicine, poetry etc., besides sixty-four abhyantara-kalā or “secret arts”’ which include mostly “erotic arts” such as kissing, embracing, etc

In Hindu, Buddhist, and Egyptian religions, the lotus is considered a sacred flower.

Among its many meanings and significance, the lotus is a symbol of "spontaneous" generation, and so it also represents divine birth, spiritual development and creation itself. 

In the same way the lotus flower goes through much in its growth before emerging from dirty water to become a beautiful flower, the individual consciousness does the same on its path to enlightenment as the so-called impurities of unenlightened thinking gradually fade. 

the inner awareness - also called the inner heart or the inner mind - is symbolized by the lotus.

Marigolds, in Hindi called Gendha, became an important flower in Indian culture and religion. Gendha garlands serve as an adornment for religious statues, or as a decoration or offering at weddings, funerals and other celebrations. They are now a widely cultivated crop in southern Asia and are used to make dye, flavoring, essential oils, and medicine.

AIRFLOW THROUGH THE SPACE

During the day, the sun heats the courtyard.  Warm air rises creating a chimney effect and pulls breeze through the rooms.

In the evening, the courtyard and buildings retain heat then give it off as the night air cools.

During the night, the courtyard and roof act as a cool air sink.
