John Healey MP, Labour’s Shadow Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning, responding to reports of David Cameron’s speech, said:

“Over the last five years with David Cameron in charge the Conservatives have completely failed on housing. They claim to be the party of home ownership but on their watch it has fallen every year for the past five years and is now at its lowest level for a generation - for those under 35, it’s down by over a fifth.

“Their record of failure has also seen rapidly rising rents, more homelessness, higher housing benefits bill, and fewer homes built than at any time since the 1920s.

“After five years of failure on housing, the millions of people struggling to cope with their housing costs deserve a real plan for more affordable homes to rent and buy. And the country needs a new wide debate about how our deepening housing crisis can be tackled.”

Work your way out poverty, Duncan Smith tell disabled

Disabled people should have to work their way out poverty and not simply be taken out of it by state financial assistance, Iain Duncan Smith has said. The Work and Pensions Secretary said it was not the role of government to pay the disabled enough to stop them being poor and that the correct way to escape poverty was by working. “We don’t think of people not in work as victims to be sustained on government handouts. No, we want to help them live lives independent of the state,” he told the annual Conservative party conference in Manchester.

Can I just say that if any of my followers think that the behaviour of the protesters at conference was acceptable they can unfollow me now. I spoke to members of this fandom who were at conference and were too scared to stay but couldn’t get to the train station to go home because of these loonies waiting outside. This “free speech for all.. but only if I agree with what you’re saying” mentality is immature and disgusting, and this gif is a perfect example of it. This man wasn’t doing anything wrong at that moment apart from having a different political standpoint to whatever yob threw the egg. How does that warrant assault? Grow up, the lot of you.

Right, yeah, a sincere inspiring man with a vision who actually cares about the young and the poor. So unelectable.

Those are good things, yes, I don’t think the electorate has an issue with any of that. I just think it’s going to be very hard to persuade Britain or the Labour Party that leaving NATO, unilaterally disarming, or adopting the rest of Corbyn’s foreign policy is a good idea. It’s not come up much during the leadership contest but the Tories will be planning to attack it from day one.
