Mags’s Book of the Week: Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate

(Before We Were Yours) follows the interwoven story lines of Avery Stafford, a lawyer from a prominent South Carolina family, and Rill Foss, the eldest of five children who were taken from their parents’ boat by an unscrupulous children’s home in the 1930s. With her father’s health ailing, duty-driven Avery is back in present-day Aiken, S.C., to look after him. She’s being groomed to step into his senate seat and is engaged to her childhood friend, Elliot, though not particularly excited about either. Though her dad is a virtuous man, his political enemies hope to spin the fact that the family just checked his mother, Judy, into an upscale nursing home while other elder facilities in the state suffer. At an event, Avery encounters elderly May Crandall and becomes fascinated by a photo in her room and a possible connection to Judy. While following a trail that Judy left behind, Avery joins forces with single dad Trent Turner, with whom she feels a spark. This story line is seamlessly interwoven with that of the abuse and separation that the Foss siblings suffer at the hands of the Tennessee Children’s Home Society, a real-life orphanage that profited from essentially kidnapping children from poor families and placing them with prominent people. Twelve-year-old Rill bears the guilt of not having been able to protect her siblings while also trying her best to get them home. - Publisher’s Weekly

Student Announcements:

Roari has an Aerial Arts Exposition on Saturday, November 17th at the Xelias Aerial Arts Studio. It begins at 1:30 PM and cover is $10 for children, $15 for adults.

The Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition is planning a protest in regards to the recent proposition to remove Transgender protections in education, employment and housing from Title IX; the proposition aims to redefine gender protections and classifications to the assignment on one’s birth certificate. The protest is planned for October 28th, starting on Chicago and ending on Lake. Check out their Facebook or contact Romeo for further details.

Robyn and David are participating in the upcoming Youth Governing Board; if you have concerns or issues plaguing you about your school or the educational system, contact them and they will take the information to the Board. Romeo is also planning on addressing one of the heads of the Minneapolis Public School Boards to address concerns in the Minneapolis Public School system in a written format; if you have felt persecuted - ignored - or otherwise silenced by the MPLS PSS, contact Romeo. All of your information and information involving other identities will remain anonymous.

The Young People’s Action Coalition (YPAC) is looking for youth facilitators. Facilitators must be 18 and under. This organization is only facilitated by students from other High Schools and Middle Schools (IE - it would be great to have representation from LNAS! Remember, our school was founded on social justice principles!) YPAC aims to be a safe place of healing for young activists and does a lot of work with larger activist organizations in Minneapolis, such as BLP, BLM, MN360, and the Black Visions Collective. A good facilitator to get in contact with is Fiona Rose Kelly (pronouns: they/them). Contact Edie or Omar for further information on how to reach Fiona!

In this turbulent day and age, especially here in the United States, it’s important to acknowledge and understand why our civil liberties exist. As we move into a period of uncertainty in terms of free and readily available access of information, we need to understand the ramifications of similar procedures in the past. In our society, the Freedom of Speech - or, the first amendment - is one of the most highly held privileges we claim to host. The Freedom of Speech extends to the Freedom of Press; the ability to write, produce, and market information without legal ramifications by any Government or Government influenced organizations.

Why does this exist in the United States, and why is this important? In the words of the ACLU, “The freedom of the press, protected by the First Amendment, is critical to a democracy in which the government is accountable to the people.”* When you consider the environment the colonizers of North America were coming from, where treason against the King could be punishable by death, it is understandable why this was such a profoundly held belief by the founding individuals of our country. It was essential that a world governed “by the people, for the people,” be open to not only differing ideas and lifestyles, but to be removed from punishing outliers in the ways those coming from the British Isles had been punished in their former homes.

So, why burn books? Why burn libraries? Libraries are often the homes of the sciences, arts, mathematics, and exploration into human thought and life here on Earth. These places are sacred and essential to progress of the human condition, but are also incredibly dangerous to those wishing to oppress a body of individuals.

In societies that have limited open expression in this way, restrictions in transference of knowledge and open access to ideas and resources have been utilized to destabilize the mass populace. If the populace can be kept unaware and disorganized, it becomes much harder - if not impossible - to gain momentum against oppression. Progress and innovation in fields which challenged the status quo became limited or even outlawed to prevent a change in sociological behavior which exceeded the rigid standards set by those authoritarian governments.

Our freedoms are important and must be protected. Often in societies which begin to crumble into fascism and dictatorships, the freedoms of speech, press, expression and religion are the first to fall.

Alpha Centauri is the star system closest to our own solar system. It contains three stars: Rigil Kentaurus (or Alpha Centauri a), Toliman (or Alpha Centauri b), and a small red dwarf star by the name of Proxima Centauri (or Alpha Centauri c.) The Alpha Centauri system is a mere 4.7 light years away from our system, and though it is so small it is not even visible to the naked eye, Proxima Centaurus is the closest star to our own sun. The system itself takes up 430 TIMES of the circumference of Neptune. The entire system together makes up the constellation we know as Centaurus.

Though it is a star, in 2016 it was discovered that a small portion of Proxima Centauri (Proxima Centauri b) is inhabitable and could sustain human life. Could you imagine living on a whole different planet - much less one which not only a star, but a distinct part of a constellation we can see?

Classroom Notes

Get down a written record for each class. Forgetting begins almost immediately.

Read in advance about the topic being discussed in class. This well allow you to ask intelligent questions about material in the text which isn’t covered clearly.

Try to write down your notes in the following outline form: Main points are listed at the margin. Secondary points and supporting details are indented. More supporting details are indented further

Write down whatever is put down on the board. Note material, which is important for exams.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions if certain points are confusing you.

Read over your notes that same day

Always write your notes in your own words. Putting ideas and information into your own words helps you to learn better.

Efficient Text reading

Sweep 1: Preview the chapter

Previewing gives you the overview of what is included in the chapter.

Title: read the title and ask yourself what you already know about the title and how it fits in with what you have previously studied

introduction: read the introduction to the chapter and ask yourself what it is about (paraphrase aloud)

Headings/topics; subheading/subtopics: read each to gain a general idea of the content to be covered

pictures, maps, charts: look at each gain additional information concerning the chapter

Sweep 2: Read the study questions

Reading the questions gives you the purpose for reading and provides clues about what details the author thinks are important.

read the study questions at the end of each section, one section at a time

The study questions that begin with these words ask for details (who, what, where, when, how, why)

Sweep 3: Really read the chapter

Use your reading comprehension strategies to read the chapter for the main ideas, details and meanings.

read the first heading/topic to understand the central theme

read the first paragraph to identify the main idea

after you have read on paragraph, highlight the main ideas and supporting details

highlight the vocabulary words and their meanings in a second colour. Look up unknown words

after each section paraphrase the main idea and details in your own words, if it is a long section paraphrase after each paragraph

as you read write the question numbers nest to the answers in the text so you can go back quickly and answer them

use a piece of paper to jot notes, definitions or key words
