[What if everyone got to be happy?]
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Note: This is yet another AU, basically an EarthC where everyone is still friends and they all got the opportunity to heal. Also, upon reaching the new universe all dead players in this AU have been resurrected so there will be mentions of "canon" dead characters being alive. They made Yiffany a thing and gave Jade a dog dick so Beyond Canon can kiss my ass.

The morning was warm, and beautiful with a fresh rainfall greeting Karkat when he opened his window. With a stretch, he felt his neck violently yet, satisfyingly crack. He looked down at the figure laying next to him, in a sleeping position that he somehow still insisted was comfortable. Karkat pulled the blanket up over Dave with a sigh. "You're not immune to back problems you idiot." He grumbled, rolling out of bed and reaching for a shirt. He yawned, softly closing the door behind him as he made his way down the hall. A familiar sound met his ears, familiar yet different. Karkat smiled gently as he turned from the stairs instead to another room. The door was slightly ajar, made sense. Their room mate hated the feeling of closed spaces.
He opened the door, it was flooded with natural light. Every window was open bathing the bedroom in a warmth and sure enough, music played from an old CD player that was probably the only thing left from his old room, only this time soft acoustic tones played instead of raspy whispers laced with a darkness that always made him uneasy. Karkat leaned against the door, crossing his arms with a smirk. "Still not used to you being an early riser." Gamzee turned from his canvas with a slight jump but a smile was adorning his face. That was something else Karkat had to get used to, his best friend's face was bare all expect for those three scars that had never quite healed.
"It's quiet, and morning feels a lot friendlier here you know?" He shrugged, turning back to his work. One of the many suggestions Rose had made was for him to seek new outlets, he had never known colours to be so beautiful. No limits, no pain. As pure as water. "Besides, these sunrises are the perfect backdrop." Karkat crossed the room which was spotless. The first few years on EarthC had been hard on everyone, Vriska herself was still struggling with the fact that there was nothing left that she had to fight. So, to see his friend, the friend he remembered even better now than he had ever been? That was something he was eternally grateful for. His eyes trailed along Gamzee's painting, it was as though he had torn the image from the sky itself.
"You're getting really good, seriously! You should talk to Dave about putting some of these in the museum!" Gamzee's hand paused, lowering the brush with a soft laugh.
"No, I couldn't." He sat on the bed, his thumb circling on the back of his hand. "I know that you believe in me and thank you." Gamzee took a deep breath. "I just don't think I'm ready...not to mention, everyone else." He added hesitantly. Karkat sat on an ottoman, leaning forward. "It feels wierd to be doing well."
The meteor felt like another lifetime ago, he still got nightmares of Sollux dying in front of him. He would wake in cold sweats with the memory of failure, failing his friends...himself. "We all did stupid shit that we regret, none of us knew any better." He lowered his gaze. "We were stupid kids, raised in a world that treated us like canon fodder instead of living things." He lifted his gaze. "And while sgrub may have been our ticket out of there? Those lives followed us, you were fed so many lies and your hope was placed in the wrong things." Gamzee could feel tears building up in his eyes as Karkat continued. "When that sense of hope and stability was destroyed?" He looked up, meeting Gamzee''s gaze. "You broke, we were faced with what we thought was our inevitable demise and we all broke in our own ways." Gamzee ran his hands along his face, trying to take deep breaths.
"When I was still having sessions with Rose, Nepeta asked to come once." He smiled, gripping his knee. "She hugged me, she fucking hugged me and said that everything was okay." Gamzee shook his head. "How on earth did I deserve her forgiveness?" Karkat stood, sitting next to Gamzee and placing a hand on his shoulder.
In all honesty, it blew his mind that they all had this chance. To live a life of peace. "Sometimes I feel like I don't deserve any of this either, I think everyone does." He shrugged. "We made through this all together and I'm just thankful that you held on." Gamzee was shaking, his sobs quiet as he pulled Karkat in a tight hug.
Gamzee ran a hand through Karkat's hair. "You deserve all the happiness in the world, please never doubt that." He asked quietly, pulling away to pat him on the shoulder as he laughed through his tears. "Man, crying and it's not even ten in the morning." Karkat joined in his laughter, feeling his own warm tears running down his face.
Dave had gotten up already to make coffee, in an oversized shirt and a pair of boxers that Karkat had begged him to get rid of but there was no fucking way he was doing that. They had been a Christmas present from John this past December, a joke pair of cartoon heart boxers that he had tried to prank Dave with but there was no way he was giving that smart ass the satisfaction of punking him. Hell no, he would wear the boxers, He would the shit out of these boxers, hell he would wear them even if streaks adorned the ass crack like a mudslide and he would show that cartoon fuck that no one pulled a fast one on Dave fucking Strider.
Plus, they were comfy as hell, again, a gift from is best friend, and they were awesome.
Karkat came down the stairs, rolling his eyes at the boxers but he was in too much of a good mood to say anything. "Thanks for making the coffee...man, you know what I could go for?"
Dave smirked. "Let me guess, a cherry danish with cream from our very own miss Jane Crocker?" He asked. Even thinking about them made Karkat salivate. "I could go for one of her cheesy breakfast scones myself." He sighed. "But I don't wanna get dressed." He groaned, looking over to see Gamzee make his way down the stairs. Downstairs and for that matter, fully dressed. "Good morning Gamz...you know, would you mind doing me a favour buddy?" Gamzee smirked.
"I'm not painting any nude of portraits of you or my best friend if that's what you're thinking." Karkat snorted, spraying coffee on the floor. Dave howled with laughter, going in for a high five as Gamzee reached for his mug. "Alright alright, what did you need?" Dave sat at the kitchen table, his head rested in his chin.
Karkat narrowed his eyes, he had been talking to Dave about this last night and the sneaky bastard was really pulling this shit now? He was worried, Gamzee would never leave the house. Especially by himself, Rose had warned all of them about the dangers of isolation worsening Gamzee's anxiety, which could inevitably bring about something worse. So, they had thought maybe they could try starting with small errands to get him used to being out and about. Nothing crazy, just simple things like grabbing drinks at the conveince store or...in this case, a visit to Jane's. Dave grinned, his hands together as his red eyes went as big and pitiful as a puppy's.
"Would you please grab an order of pastries at Jane's cafe before it gets too busy and all the good stuff is gone?"
So, there Gamzee was. A list in hand, walking down the street trying to ignore his racing heart at ten thirty in the morning. Jane, he hardly remembered her. He had seen her at one point, he knew that much but it felt like a fever dream. Some bullshit about selling...potions? What the fuck had those even been, and that outfit FUCK that stupid outfit. He felt a shiver run down his spine just thinking about it. Gamzee looked at the address on the paper again then turned the corner to face the Blue Tulip Cafe. It was a simple building, that reminded him of one of the rom coms Karkat and Dave had made him sit through. Blue and white striped awnings, glass display windows with giant cakes and flowers on display. He leaned to look in, and sure enough it was already bustling with the morning rush. A short plump figure was spinning around and around, with trays full of coffee and cake.
Jane had woken that morning like every day, six sharp with a quick omelet and toast before prepping for the morning rush. Fresh scones, piping hot muffins, and the daily cake pop special. Today they were Earl Grey and lavender. Decorated to look like purple and blue hydrangeas. There never seemed enough time in the day, and now was certainly no exception.
The many continents of EarthC, were desnely populated but in Victory City as John had regrettably named the place where they all had decided to settle together; it seemed her humble bakery was the most popular place for breakfast. Dirk was waiting at the counter for his boxed order, chuckling as he watched Jane. "You know Crocker, you should really consider hiring some help." Jane rolled her eyes, laughing off the stress as she made her way back to the counter.
When they came to EarthC the battle was over but for them all it had only been the beginning. Jane swore off Crockercorp, had crushed her tiara under her feet and built this place from scratch. Everything, every pastry, everything that she did was all from scratch. She had started this as something to do, she hadn't expected people to actually care about it. Hiring people? Made it feel like well...too much of a business and that was the last thing she wanted. "It's just the morning rush dirk, now let me guess; a stuffed pumpkin muffin for Jade, and a coffee with an ungodly amount of sugar with a chocolate croissant with all the trimmings for you?" Dirk shrugged, peering over his small glasses. He hadn't worn shades for years.
"Right on the money, and I'm serious you should get some help around here..." He tilted his head. "You're running yourself ragged, if Roxy finds out she might kill you." Jane sighed, looking around at the shop that seemed almost bursting at the seams with people.
"I suppose you're right, okay I will talk to Slick and get an ad in the paper." She promised. "Now you get back to the lab! This city can't run itself you know." There were trains that could run at the speed of light, friends on the other side of the world could visit at the push of a button; support devices that made life all the better for those with disabilities, all made possible with Jade's incredible powers, scientific mind, and Dirk's brilliant robotics. Dirk took the blue and white striped box from Jane with a quick thank you as Gamzee walked in. He waved politely as he passed by. "Oh hey, it's nice to see you! I think you came just in time, Jane still has most of the breakfast pastries." Gamzee thanked him quietly with a nervous smile.
The first thing that he noticed was the noise, there were so many people he felt like his throat was closing in on itself. His eyes, locked on the list in his hands. An apple fritter, cherry danish, cheese scones, half a dozen red velvet cupcakes, and then whatever Gamzee was in the mood for. He swallowed hard, his feet like lead as he approached the counter. The tips of his shoes hitting the counter snapped him back into focus, his gaze meeting a pair of blue eyes that made the room seem to go still. "Hey it's nice to see you, Gamzee right?" Jane smiled gently, "Can I help you?"
His words were still catching in his throat, the noise was not helping. Jane looked down to see the list in his hands. She lifted her hand slowly. "If that's a list I can take that if you like?" Gamzee nodded, exhaling in relief as he shakily handed her the list. She chuckled softly. "I'm sorry it's so loud in here, you're welcome to take a seat and I'll get this taken care of in a few minutes; would you like a cup of tea or something? On the house!" Gamzee laughed, still feeling like his stomach was in his throat.
"That sounds great actually, uhm...maybe just a plain green tea please?" He asked. "Please take your time! You seem completely swamped." Jane pinned the list to the board as Gamzee stepped out of line. Several tables were ready to pay and she was ringing up the orders with the efficiency of a clock, it was almost mesmerizing.
"The morning rush is always like this; things usually slow down by noon." She explained, going from the register to the take out boxes to pack up extra sweets. "It doesn't bother me really." Jane assured him. As Gamzee watched from an empty table he found, he wondered if she was saying that more to herself than him. Her soft cheeks were flushed, and she was rushing about until only a few customers remained.
Jane approached Gamzee's table with a small porcelain tea set. Pouring a perfectly steeped cup of green tea with a smile. The soft gentle sound of the tea filling the cup brought Gamzee back down to earth. It was only then, that he noticed how quiet the shop was now. "See? What did I tell you." Jane grinned, setting down the tea set to get Gamzee's order. "This looks familiar, I'm guessing that Dave sent you?" She asked. "He hates the morning rush." Gamzee laughed nervously, lifting the delicate cup that felt far too small in his hands. He had come to prefer mugs, however the intricate floral patters and curves of the glass were still beautiful.
"You bet! He-" His voice made him wince a little, echoing ever so slightly in the small space. "I well-I can see why he doesn't like the morning rush." Gamzee quickly added. Jane looked up from the small piece of paper. She could see in his untidy scrawl that he had written "choose something I like." At the bottom. She looked over at the case, she wasn't sure what sort of sweets he even liked. Dave had mentioned once that he had a sweet tooth at one point but she knew nothing more than that. Jane looked up to see him sipping the tea, and as soon as the warm brew went down his throat his whole body seemed to relax. The flavours were subtle, but grounding. He had long since given up soda, even just thinking about it made him want to gag. "Uhm, Jane?" He called over, making her jump a little. She only hoped he hadn't noticed her staring, which of course him being as observant as a brick wall even now; he had not.
"Did you want to add something to your order?" Jane asked, waving to the display case. "There's our daily cake pop special; earl grey and lavender with white chocolate; double chocolate brownies, ginger cookies, tarts." Gamzee had been eyeing the tarts, mesmerized. They looked like cute mini pies; nothing like the abominations he remebered making. They looked pristine, glowing even.
"Wait, aren't those just...tiny pies?" He asked, making Jane giggle. He found himself liking that sound. She explained, walking over and taking a couple. They were bite sized.
"They pretty much are, they just don't typically have a flaky crust like most pies." Jane took out a blueberry lemon tart. "Here, try one!" She placed it on a napkin embossed with lace patterns; he couldn't help but find himself impressed by the details. He thanked her, holding the tiny pastry in his hands as though he were scared of crushing it. The texture of the jelly, made him hesitate a little. A nervous burning sensation at the back of his mind, he closed his eyes. The last thing he wanted was to be rude but the thought of this tasting or feeling like sopor was enough to make him feel sick on the spot. Yet, as soon as it hit his tongue he opened his eyes in surprise. The sopor; had burned like fire and tasted sour uncontrollably sour no matter how much sugar he had tried to shovel in. This, was worlds different. He savoured every sensation, the sweetness of the blueberry jam complimented the tart lemon. The perfect balance, the perfect portion.
"Wow!" He murmured, not even realizing he was staring at the ceiling. Gamzee snapped out of his stupor, his face turning a shade of purple that matched the cake pops in the display cabinet. "Oh sorry! I was just...they're delicious! Thank you, could I order one of each? I would like to have them with my tea if that's okay." He asked.
There were practically stars in his eyes as he asked, Jane felt her own face burning at such a heartfelt compliment. "T-thank you so much! Of course, andā¦they're on the house." She insisted, placing the six tarts delicately on a porcelain plate. He was grinning from ear to ear, thanking her as he took the plate instead of making her bring it to the table.
"Don't worry I got it, thank you! I feel bad eating up so much of your products though, guess I'll have to come back and buy them all tomorrow!" He suggested, an innocent remark but it made Jane's heart skip a beat all the same. She nodded, smiling warmly as he returned to his seat. Gamzee poured himself another cup of tea, looking over each tart with fascination. There were five others that all looked just as good as the lemon blueberry one. A butter tart topped with pecans and cinnamon sugar, raspberry with custard, dark chocolate with candied orange, peaches and cream, the last one; key lime with meringue made him chuckle a little. They were all delicious, but the blueberry one was definitely his favorite. Jane couldn't help but smile, watching as he savored each one. She had never seen such sincerity.
He didn't get up until the pot was drained and every last crumb had disappeared from his plate. There were a few stragglers coming in for an early lunch, ordering sandwiches made on fresh baked bread and leftover croissants from the morning. Dave and Karkat's order was complete; she had even made them fresh cupcakes and thrown in a cake pop for good measure. Gamzee took the blue paper bag, eyeing the tag Jane had written on in perfect cursive; "come again soon!" He looked up with that contagious grin.
"You bet I'll be back, I need to pay you back for those little pies!" He insisted, handing her the change before excitedly waving his long awkward arm. "Thanks again!" Jane couldn't help but laugh, his body language was so silly and sweet.
"I'll be looking forward to it!" She promised, the door closing with the ring of the bell. Jane watched him walk past the display window and down the street. "No matter how tiring this may feel, it's always worth it to see someone smile like that." Jane thought to herself as she stocked the loaves of bread on the shelves. It felt like she was able to bring some positivity, even a little. Baked into every bite.
(Thank you so much for reading this little meet cute, I am looking forward to writing more of this story and finally completing Midnight city!!
