One thing about the post-finale wave of new Jax haters that frustrates yet amuses me is that a lot of them are actually former Jax simps.
Like, 6/10 new haters I've encounter in the past two-ish months used to adore Jax.
You can search the Jax tag on their blog and they were making thirst posts about her.
They were selfshipping with her.
They were trying to justify every misdeed and woobify her.
They were demonizing Ragatha and Gangle for standing up to her.
They were taking their Jax plushies on dates to restaurants, and movies, and fairs, and etc.
They were exploring their fetishes and kinks using her character.
They unironically wanted the "I can fix him shirt."
They were unironically using Pomni and Ragatha to self-insert into the show to be with her.
They were making OCs who's sole purpose for existing was to date her.
They were writing fics about marrying her.
But the revelation that she was in fact a woman the whole time broke their brains.
Now they're back tracking hard and trying to hide the transphobia behind performative "lib speak" (for lack of a better term) so they don't lose their ally points.
They want to be seen as an ally because it makes them feel good, but they're not willing to put in any of the actual work, including the self-work of addressing why being attracted to a trans woman makes them so uncomfortable.
They just want credit while being given a pass to be transphobic. Which they're not getting, and a lot of them are having temper tantrums about it.
On days where it doesn't outright piss me off, it's really entertaining to watch them flounder in a hell of their own making.
Jax from TADC
I used to wonder if I was really trans, if I was just making it up or doing it for attention. When I was younger, I would try on my mother's clothes and spend Sundays putting on makeup.
I think that's part of why transfem Jax is so important to me.
Dysphoria does not excuse Jax's behavior, and it is not the sole reason for it, but it does contextualize it in some aspects. Repression brings out the worst in you.
"Aren’t you supposed to be miserable about having the ability to choose your own body or something?"
Envy. Resentment. A self-fulfilling prophecy. Everyone who is nice to you is doing it because they pity you.
Under the weight of dysphoria, there isn't meaningful joy in the promise of tomorrow. There is seeing the people around you and believing they don't see you how you want to be seen. When I tried to repress my dysphoria, I became a shell of a person. My house got messy. I stopped caring about cleaning up. I wallowed in misery. I would lay in bed wondering what was wrong with me and feeling like everybody could see it.
Another piece of media that's important to me with a trans character is We Know the Devil.
Venus is shy and awkward. She doesn't fit in. She can't tell when people are lying to her-and even when she can, she pretends to believe them. Deeply, deeply closeted.
Venus, your problem is that you are very nice. But you want something. And you think being nice is going to give it to you. But it never will. And until you figure out what it is you want. Every kindness of yours will be full of that want. Like mine is.

I don't think estrogen alone would have 'fixed' Jax.
But it would have helped. Starting HRT has given me access to deeper and fuller emotions. without the overwhelming brain fog of dysphoria... I feel like a person. It helps, too, that I started therapy and an SSRI.
I never thought I'd make it to 20... but here I am at 26. Alive. With my body slowly becoming what I wanted it to be.
To other trans women: there is hope out there.
